I don't know if this has been covered before, but I know that there is the ESB thread on Fett costume goofs. While watching ROTJ I noticed something. When Leia hands over Chewbacca and Fett draws his weapon his cape is on the wrong side.

The rangefinder is on the wrong side too so it's probably just a flipped frame?

on the SE version of Ep 4, when fett walks by, his cape isn't even attached to anything, looks like it's just tucked behind the jetpack, I'm sure someone may have a screenshot of it by now.

yup, when he walks off you can see it's not attached where it's supposed to be., even here you can tell it's riding low.

Also, if you watch that scene backwards, you can clearly make out Boba singing Stairway to Heaven.

    Thanks for the pic, saint_nasty!

You know what bothers me in that in that one particular scene with Jabba & Han Solo in SE-SW ANH, was that you can clearly see that Boba Fett had a big "beer belly", and the ammo belt was clearly sagging. (The "actor" was clearly out of shape.) In the original scenes with Jeremy Bulloch, Boba Fett had a flat stomach, and he had a different build, different stance & posture than the SE versions. (It was obvious in the SE versions, that the person wearing the costume had a different height & build.)

It makes me wonder why they didn't rehire Jeremy Bulloch again, instead of grabbing random Lucasfilm ILM personnel who were clearly out of shape to play the role of Boba Fett. Jeremy Bulloch was still very fit and trim back in 1997, and he didn't have a "beer belly".

Hmmm...Maybe Boba Fett had a big buffet breakfast on that day?

I don't think Mark Austin was all that big. I think it's just a natural result of the jetpack's weight pulling back and compensating by thrusting out your chest. And with the armor, the belly just follows.

The flipped frame ALWAYS has bothered me. I know they did it for the line of sight / geography thing, but the flipped antenae seems to be more of a jarring effect than not flipping.

They cut to this flipped shot 3 times. It was done in order to obey the 180 degree line rule. In the scene, Jabba is facing from left to right, and Boushh is facing screen right to left. If they used the shot unflipped it would appear Fett was either behind Leia, or would almost appear as if Fett was drawing his gun on Jabba. When editing, Walter Murch suggests 6 things to consider in order of importance to making a cut. He calls it the rule of six. At the bottom of the list is 3 dimensional continuity, which is what I would consider this flipped frame. The editor made the right decision. Eye trace is listed fourth. I am willing to bet, that even among the hard core fans who saw this film in the theater in May 1983, 99% did not catch this flipped frame, and of those who did, it is a vanishingly small number remaining who were still bothered by it in any significant way. It is only now, after 30 years of repeated viewing, the advent of freeze frame and unbridled obsession over one's own screen faithful Fett costume down to the minutest of details that we find ourselves objecting to the shot and discussing it, myself included.

I would suggest that it would make a great experiment for someone to redo this sequence with the shot of Fett "fixed" to unflipped and see how it looks, and which would be more jarring to us now -- flipped or unflipped.

I've always wondered why ILM never fixed the flip, both scenes.

I can see the 'sightline' theory but with Fett standing by himself it's kinda abstract anyway and without any reference point he could be anywhere in Jabbas palace. I never noticed it until it was pointed out to me online about 10 years ago but it bugs me everytime I see it.

I agree that with him by himself and basically facing the camera it "should" look right if it were fixed.

As an experiment, I just flipped the still pic and kind of imagined how the scene plays out. While I really thought it would look right flipped, it doesn't. Maybe it's just from seeing it wrong for decades.
