Recasting and why it is not acceptable

The only thing I have to add to this thread is :

1) RECASTED is NOT a word. The true form is recast for present, past, and future tense.

2) recasting is NOT illegal. Copy right law is a whole other can o' worms

The mindset of someone who buys something only to copy it, is MONEY. They are after a quick buck, and generally do not care about art, artists, or ethics. So it is very difficult to reason "right or wrong" with them.

I pesent a small question as to the gray areas. I bought a resin helmet of unknown origins on eBay and I had to open a dispute to even get it. After I got it, the guy was blocked by eBay and I have zero idead where it even came from (somewhere in California by the post mark) This lid has no known maker or origin. No markings and no trademarks. The question is, What would it take to make it allowable to make a casting of this item to appease the Thread Gods??? I have no intentions of doing this but I pose the question to continue a informativ discussion. Thanks folks.

In this case, there is no clear audit trail back to origin, and if it means a lot of work to make this item good, then cast it. In this instance it is not RECAST , only cast :)

secondly recasting may not be illegal but it is immoral.

"lot of work"...I bought it in May and I almost have it cleaned up enough for painting...almost...:facepalm

I never said recasting is illegal, just stated that if you decide to mold a licensed helmet and decide to sell it, then you are in the lawsuit playgrounds where the bigger bullys, in this case (Lucasfilms, etc) can sue you. If you are selling for a profit, and multiple copys. If you are just selling an MR because you dont want it anymore, then I highly doubt that Lucas will run after you. What we do is on sensitive grounds anyways so it wouldnt be a shock if Lucasfilms decides to shut down all star wars propmaking sites.

You realize that even if you spend thousands of hours and tons of hard work to make your own helmet from scratch, mold it and sell it, you're still in copyright infringement. Lucas could issue a C&D to anyone who made a helmet or other prop (and has before) for infringing on intellectual copyright. Anyone recall a time when sites like this were in real trouble? We were accused of "giving people the knowledge an means to break intellectual copyright law".

Everything we do is a gray area when it comes to ethics and morals. What's not a gray area is the CoC. I can't count how many times this topic has been discussed before. I'm not saying you have to leave it alone (since there are a lot of new members who haven't joined in this discussion yet) you should just know that feelings have been hurt, people have been flamed, and members have even left over this.

So you recast from an evil corporation "ie: Lucasfilm, MR., DP, Microsoft (had to put them in there they are the most sinister, and I have no moral problems using my trusty stdent xp pro cd on everything in my house!) it is not frowned upon like casting from a members/enthusiest's hard work.
