    Apr 27, 2009, 7:16 AM - Quick one for guitarists #1

    Guys,

Im hoping there are a few guitarists here who could give me some help.Im looking to buy a new amp soon, and am looking at the Peavey Vypyr30 or a Peavey Bandit.I know the Vypyr is a modeling amp,so i wouldnt need my zoom G2.1U effects unit but im tempted to go with the bandit and keep the effects box.

Im tempted to go for a decent Marshall amp too,but their stuff isnt exactly great at the moment.I was thinking of a Valvestate but hmm,i dunno.Ive got around 150-200 to spend.

    Any help is appreciated.

I currently own a line 6, crate and three marshall amps, the amp you go for is all dependant on what sounds youre after, I love my Marshalls as they give the classic rock n' roll sound, the crate has a really nice stereo chorus amp, so gives a really nice clean sound, whereas the line 6 isgreat for live work, due to the versatility of its sounds.

The valvestates are pretty nice for the money too, best thing to do, is go into the shop and demo as many as you can, i did this with all the amps I purchased

Just save some more and get a mesa... I love my dual rec. best head I've ever owned. But if you are looking for something small still save and get a mesa or orange combo, you'll never regret it.

I've had Crate, Fender, Marshall, and settled on a Mesa Boogie. All were great amps for different reasons. For the price range you're looking at, I'd probably get a Crate over a Peavey. You have plenty of time to save up for a Mesa or an Orange.

I've tried the Peavey Vypyr and I've gotta say that it didn't really impress me too much. It wasn't bad, but it immediately irritated me because it malfunctioned when starting up. Just like the reviews I'd read, it booted up improperly and didn't work. I had to turn it off, wait a second or two, then turn it on again for it to work. Other than that I suppose it wasn't too bad.

BUT, if you're looking for a modeling amp, I suggest you try the Vox VT50. It has a pretty nice 12inch speaker and a closed back. There is a 30watt model also but it has a smaller speaker and and open back. I didn't even know they made a modeling amp, but there it was in the showroom. The tone it kicked out completely blew the Peavey and Line 6 Spider away. Find one to try somewhere and see what you think. It mostly comes down to what you personally think sounds best.

I was able to pick up a Randall 75 watt with 2 x 10" and built in effects for around $400 US for home use and have been extremely happy with it... You can get a 50 watt for close to what you are looking to pay. I play a Gibson Les Paul through it with no complaints.

I too agree that Line 6 is awesome... Berhinger makes a comparable (cheaper) model called the Vampire that is close to the Spider amp.

I would say if you are set on Peavey (they are fairly inexpensive to buy) then go with the Bandit, those things are workhorses and will last forever... you could always buy a better speaker to put in it eventually, like a Black Widow 12" or something to make it sound crisper and clearer.
