Purchased a Disney 18" Boba Fett and cut it into pieces ! Figure Mod

pcoz

New Hunter
So, I was in the store one day and happened to pass by an 18" Boba Fett figure. It was a huge figure and I had to have it....just not in the rigid, marching band pose it was stuck in. It was the Disney ESB version with no weapon, even though he clearly has a trigger finger....or maybe arthritis has set in. He has been around for a long time. He also came with the rocket pack so all in all, I couldn't resist. $19 later and the project has begun.

He looked up from the store shelf and said "take me from this horrid place and improve me"

I said " As you wish"

My 10 year old son looked up at me with a puzzled look as I walked in with this ginormous star wars figure. I said "what ? you've got toys".....of course he doesn't play with them anymore......crap

I'll admit, I really didn't have a clear cut plan to "dress" up or repose the figure. I looked around for a while online and almost decided on a shooting stance with the EE-3.....but of course he didn't come with a weapon. hmmm, I'll have to make one.

After researching the EE-3, (thanks to everyone in this forum for inspiration and reference) I decided to make it out of balsa wood and foam.

Instead of an action pose, I'm going to have Fett standing tall overlooking a vast expansive land. chest up, leaning forward, one leg on a step up, weapon resting on the leg......maybe cape blowing in the wind (super hero-esque) I decided to transform this Boba into the Return of the Jedi version.

Although I want this to be somewhat movie accurate, I want it to be a little grungier and weathered than in the ESB and ROTJ films.

So now to the chop house !!!

I removed all the screws and dismembered this guy pretty quickly.

IMG_8999.JPG

The hands were just big blobs of plastic so I started to widdle them down to achieve some details...

IMG_9002.JPG

The molded wookie scalps had to go......We'll make real ones later. The chest plates looked good though, I can work with them.

IMG_9006.JPG

Boba's molded visor had to go too. We can improve

IMG_9010.JPG

Removed the range finder completely as it was flimsy rubber. The helmet itself had a great shape but lacked a few of the details I hope to restore.

IMG_9015.JPG

Get over here !

IMG_9016.JPG

Scalps gone, time for some filler....

IMG_9019.JPG

Here is the basic pose I'm shooting for. Although it won't be a dramatic pose, I think a more natural, subtle pose will do it justice

IMG_9022.JPG

Carving the neck out

IMG_9025.JPG

Cut the arm in half and and angled it in a little at the elbow

IMG_9027.JPG

The arm will be resting on the top of the leg with the barrel of the EE-3 pointed down.

Well, that's it for now. More to come soon.

Thanks for looking.

I am sorry man but unless you have an incredibly small son I don't think he is going to fit in that 18 inch costume.

Haha, no doubt. It's obviously not a costume but I figured fett fans might want to see it. Considering my extensive research through this site, I thought it'd be the right thing to do....throw it in the general forum. If it's a problem, I can always throw it on RPF

That's awesome!!!! It's too bad we don't appreciate how cool our toys were when we were kids - until we're all grown up!!!! I still have my Darth, Yoda and medical droid from original Star Wars movie. My son used the Star Wars blanket I had as a kid when he was little (17 now). Am beginning my first armor build (x4) for cosplay this summer.

Thanks cosplaymom ! Stay with me on this one, it gets much better... I actually just completed this project but just haven't had the time to post. I really enjoy the process of creation and problem solving. Sounds like you do too....4 fett costumes ? Are you crazy?!? Will you be posting progress pics?

I have no issues....I was just trying to make you laugh

crumdum... I did laugh. No worries. As far as the kids, they don't want anything to do with it, lol. I recently forced my son to watch the original Star Wars trilogy. about every 15 minutes or so he would comment about how cheesy it was. had to tell him that we did not have the special effects back then that we have now. heck, my kids wondered how I grew up without internet....

Awesome. I've been lusting after Medicom and Sideshow Fett figures on eBay for a while now, but haven't had the funds to commit. If you manage to make this screen accurate, I may have to give it a go myself.

If and when I have kids, I'm going to make it clear that if they diss Star Wars, they're disowned. Can't have traitors in the ranks.

Yeah, those are great figures....I too have a hard time throwing $200-$300 at things like that even though I'd love to have them. The other cool thing about this figure, is the scale. It's a full 18" tall...I believe the Med/Side's are 12".....the downside to this figure is the lack of detail. So that's where we come in. A poor man's Sideshow if you will.

Oh, and my son finally came around as we prepared for ESB. He loved the story but couldn't get past the 70's special effects. Kids today, are spoiled with CGI. You can almost create anything now and make it look realistic. He's excited to see SW7 in IMAX.

Funny thing as we watched ROTJ, the scene where Luke and Vader are walking up the stairs to the Emperor.....he says calmly " Look, It's take your kid to work day" I almost died laughing....great timing.

Anyway, I'm going to post another progress batch tonight. Thanks for looking....

Ok, here we go with an update....

IMG_9043.JPG

Left arm cut so I can bend the elbow slightly

IMG_9045.JPG

Hot glued foam board to fill in large holes

IMG_9046.JPG

Balsa wood for the elbow joint since arm is hollow....

IMG_9048.JPG

ready to hot glue them together and trim balsa

IMG_9053.JPG

And here is the basic upper body pose I'm shooting for...

IMG_9054.JPG

IMG_9057.JPG

lower your weapon please.....

IMG_9060.JPG

ah, that's more like it

IMG_9030.JPG

Anyone hear of Creative Paperclay ? Its a water soluble paper clay that air drys hard and is easily carved, fixed, painted, etc. Great stuff ! ....and of course I had a bunch laying around so that helps

IMG_9035.JPG

I figured I could use it to cover up and fill in the joints. I could also use it to redo the sleeves and add more clothing detail later

IMG_9063.JPG

IMG_9065.JPG

So I ran into a problem trying to get the right pose without the EE-3, so I figured it's time to make it

IMG_9067.JPG

IMG_9085.JPG

well, that's it for tonight....I'll try to post some more soon.

Thanks for checking it out !
