*Official* How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I was sort of getting at this in my Obi-Wan Jedi Academy post, but here' s what I really want to know. What are the physical things to do when in costume to get into character? Walk slowly, don't talk a lot, be dignified--what else do you guys think?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
the fett nod like in jabba's palace. you have to do that!
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Not sure I totally agree with the walk slowly. More like walk with PURPOSE! That really is the key to Fett. It seem sthat every move he makes is minimalistic and purposeful. There are no wasted movements, no showy displays. Unlike stormtroopers who can screw around and ham it up, Fett should be stoic, stern and serious.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
My suggestion is to start a very strenious weight lifting program the day before, then the only way to move is slowly, you will be too sore to do anything else!!! :)
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
The thing to always keep in mind while playing Fett is that you are very intimidating to all of the people standing around you. Use that to your advantage. Exploit it.
You're wearing a suit of weaponry. They can't see your face. All they see is their own frailty and uneasiness reflected back at them.
You are cold.
You are merciless.
You display no emotion.
But always maintain a posture of calm readiness. You don't say much. You don't move much. But you could kill everyone in the room in a matter of seconds if necessary.
Just do what Jeremy Bulloch did...watch "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" and imitate Clint Eastwood. ;)

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Jeez BH, are you a writer? That was said beautifully! :)
Seriously though, I think that you all have it nailed. It is really hard to show yourself as a threat without showing off your skills. I see other black belts on campus all the time, and if I didn't see them work out in the dojo, I would never think of them as dangerous--they just don't show any indication of their skills when they are walking around.
Fett, however, looks dangerous without showing off. I think I would be tempted to toss off a head high side kick once in a while, but that just isn't Fett's style. (Judging from the previews, that might go better for someone in a Jango costume.) It's just hard to LOOK like you can kick someone's butt without actually doing it.
Do we have any indication of Fett's hand-to-hand fighting skills? Or does he only fight with his weapons?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Well he does wear a survival knife in his left shin pocket, so I'm sure he's got some CQC (close quarter combat) skills. But hey, with a reputation like his, who would want to go toe-to-spiked toe with him anyway?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
It's all about attitude. Me personally, I NEVER take my helmet off in public. I don't care how hot it gets.
I would rather go somewhere where no one can see for a drink or a breather.
Treat your costume and weapons as if they can really do what they do on the screen. The same way an actor
talks to a cardboard cutout that will be CG at a later date. You have to take your character seriously, if you want the public to do the same. It's not like we don't have a reference to go by. Watch and study Boba's scenes over and over.
Movements should be slightly exagerated. A turn of your head looks and feels different when you are wearing a big helmet. You may have to slightly exaggerate your movements. SLIGHTLY. Practice. and above all...have fun.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
In Twin Engines, he displays a little foot to head fighting. Jodo keeps callin him old, and he kicks the **** out of him, and hits his jet pack with a crowbar. So.. I think if he needs to, he can kick arse.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Act confident but relaxed. When someone waves to you or speaks. Simply nod and turn away, as if you see that they are no threat to you. When I walk a room I make sure to scan side to side slowly as if looking for possible targets. Also look at lots of still pics and practice the poses for pictures. I always hate seeing pictures of me when I made agoofy looking pose.
I'll have to watch "The good, the bad, and the ugly" again. Myabe I get a fewmore pointers.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Agreed, Bob.
Don't ever take your helmet off in public. It kills the whole illusion for everyone. Once they see that you're just a normal-lookin' guy in costume, they'll relate to you in a much more relaxed fashion. You're no longer Boba Fett.
But if you'll just stand there cradeling your rifle with a cool, menacing demeanor in a movie theater as the crowds stroll in, occasionally giving a slow nod to someone who waves or speaks to you, you WILL be Boba Fett.
It's really quite amazing to be in that suit. Both kids and adults will gather around you to marvel at the detail of your costume. But they never want to get too close. They all tend to keep a respectful distance because deep down, they are intimidated by your appearance. It's actually funny to watch, because you'll see people actually checking each other's distance from you, because they don't want you to single them out for getting too close. In fact, the kids prove to be much braver on this front than the adults.
People will try to speak to you in an attempt to relieve their own anxiety about being confronted by a faceless assassin. They'll ask you things like, "Wow. You put some time into this costume, didn't you? How long did it take?"
Don't answer. It's not a costume. You are Boba Fett. Simply look away slowly as if you couldn't be bothered answering such a question.
People become soooo uneasy when you won't speak. And it makes the experience so much more real for them.
The only time you should speak is if:
a) You have a good voice/speaker setup that keep your voice in true character. If not, don't say anything.
b) If you have something very "Fett" to say. And this doesn't necessarily mean quoting movie lines. But if after several failed attempts at getting you to speak, a person finally asks you, "don't you ever talk?", you simply lean slowly into that person's personal space, pause for a moment, and then say, "...When I have something too say.", and then proceed to return to your ready stance.
Be creative. But be minimal. Less is definitely more with Fett.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
:cry Stop it BH. You are scaring even me!!!
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
And on a side note...it's not just about "scaring people". It's about being faithful to the character you are portraying.
Everything that I described above is how you should behave if you're going as Boba. But obviously that is not how you would relate to the crowd if you were, say, Vader. Vader is talkative and expressive. People WANT to hear the Vader voice. So you would relate to the crowd in a completely different manner.
If your Han, Luke, Obi-Wan...whatever...you would be much more friendly and approachable. Just be true to the character.
If you're gonna be Boba...you can't be a pansy about it. He's dangerous and ruthless, and you've gotta play the part faithfully.
And that's not to say that people can't have their pictures taken with you or anything. A lot of people will want to do that. You just don't need to break character or start talking a lot to pose for a picture.
Keep it real for the fans. Even when you intimidate them, they still leave the experience telling everyone they know about how "the REAL Boba Fett was at the theater that night, and he was Bad-***!"
It's fun & exciting.
~Brian

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
So does it make it less effective is you are short like me? Is is hard to be bad-*** when you are 5'6'' and everyone is looking at the top of your helmet?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Not if you kick one or two in the nads every now and then. Instant respect and attention getter, especially if you are sneaky about it and all anyone sees is some huge guy writhing in pain on the floor and you are simply standing above him doing nothing. Everyone goes "What the heck just happened here???"
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
:lol
"Put that guy's nads in the cargo hold."
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Brak's, is that the only way you can get respect? :p Just kidding!
Really though, I am getting so excited about wearing my costume now! Before I was wondering how I would pull it off (and if I would look too much like a girl--Demi Moore looked very girly in G.I. Jane despite the buzz cut), but with everyone's insight, I am feeling like I could do this well. Please keep the ideas coming! I'm sure we all want to hear about how to BE Fett--the best costume in the world can be ruined by stepping out of character (Jango with an umbrella comes to mind...).

Nope. I frighten the hell out of 'em with my hick accent... Anyone who has ever talked to me on the phone knows EXACTLY what I am talking about... I open my mouth and all my credibility goes right out the window.. Just another dumb southerner...
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
5'6??
Hell, I'm 5'5"!! :lol
Yes, you can pull it off. It's much more acceptable to be a 5'6" Fett than a 5'6" Vader.
I do haunted attractions every year, so the study of the psychology of people reacting to you while you are in costume is something I've spent many years exploring.
(Do you have any idea how many people poop themselves when confronted by an evil clown? You'd be amazed.)
There's a definite science and methodology to knowing how to properly take advantage someone else's "personal space" while you're in costume.
Most of the theory that I've discussed above really only applies to "masked" or "helmeted" characters, though. If you dress up as Han Solo, people can see that you're obviously NOT Harrison Ford. Therefore, you are really only a "representation" of that character. But when your visage is hidden behind a character's helmet or mask, you ARE that character. So you gotta play it straight up.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
As to how to act like Fett, I got what I consider the biggest compliment a Fett can get (!) last year when I was at at Memorabilia 2001, Jeremy was there and pointed me out to his wife and a couple of others with him and said " he's doing it just right, look, he's cradling the gun and has the head tilt!" then came up to me and said " Hello Jools, recognised the suit"!!!!! ******, that made my weekend! I'd only met Jeremy in the gear once before about 6 months previous but he remembered! Quality Bloke!
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
It looks like you all have it covered pretty good, but if you were in the right context I can think of something else that would be very Fett-like...
If someone in the room makes a threat or even just a wise comment, get out your gun real quick and aim it at them, not saying a word, just standing in a ready stance until they back down, apologize or something.
That's what Fett did in Jabba's palace when Leia pulled out the detonator.
Of course, since your gun's a replica and I'm sure nobody here would REALLY shoot someone, you may run into Fett problems if they didn't take it back... One solution to that would be to simply look them over like you were evaluating if they were worth your ammo and putting your gun away as if it wasn't.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I generally don't point my gun at others unless it's for a picture or they do something to show they are into it. Like stand in front of you with their hands up. Not that a solid resin blaster could harm anyone but I don't want anyone complaining that I'm trying to scare people with the gun. Some people don't realize it's not real. Besides no one at a con is worth that much of Fett attention as it is. Unless of course it's someone in a Han costume. Than all bets are off.:)

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Yeah, one more thing that I want everyone here to take into serious consideration...
Things aren't the same after September 11th. Don't just show up at a theater on opening day of EP2 decked out in your full Fett gear un-announced to the theater owners. They may not let you in.
The big cineplex in my town has since adopted some new security measures banning all packages and backpacks from being carried into the theater, as well as other new policies. So don't go thinking that it's gonna be kosher to go carrying a realistic looking rifle into a crowded public building.
Meet with the theater owners beforehand. Explain to them that you'd be interested in showing off your costume while offering free promotion to the theater. Get the "OK" on everything first.
The same applies to CONS. Find out what specific rules have been laid down before you show up in full gear.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
wow! this is a great thread! im new to this board..obviously ;) ...but im a regular at the RPF(unitedfederationofficers) and at ASAP(UFOlives)
i dont have a fett suit/armor yet...but im interested in getting one....i have a question first though:
ive heard you guys talk about being too short for a fett but i got that covered(im 6'+) but my question is this:
how BIG is too big for a boba fett? im about 255-260 LBS and its not all muscle :( sadly :( is that too...fat to look good in a boba fett suit/armor?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs. In order to truely look the part you may need to consider losing some weight. Please don't take that the wrong way. It's only meant as being honest. I'm starting a diet now because I noticed at a con this weekend my suit starting to get a little to tight in spots and I don't want to hear "Boba Fatt" taunts from behind me at cons. I'm going to nip it in the bud before it happens.
What it really boils down to is, for you to decided for yourself and do what you want to do.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
or if they say" do you ever talk?" just repley back with " you talk enough for the both of us". but yes watch every spagetti western with clint eastwood..you get some good fett attitdue in it..also read books, comics, of fett...use what is said in them...like fett is known for his " one liners". so use them and make up some of your own...somwething you feel fett would say...

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
"I'm a lil teapot, short and....", no that won't work.
"I am a mirror, you are glue,.....", hmm, not that either.
"There was a lil girl, who had a lil curl, ....".
This is alot tougher than it sounds. :(

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
To really be a Fett, just start break danceing like I did in the Mall :lol
I sorta did a Party Boy in my Trooper armor, pretty funny.. To bad I didn't take any pics though :D

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
As for the "slow & calculted walk" that Fett fans have come to love, once you putt your full costume on, you'll understand. Not to take anything away from Jeremy as a terrific actor, but once you're in full suit, (at least this has been my experience,) you can't help but act the part! Why does Fett have such a "cool, calculated, and confident walk? Because you can't see worth a dang out of the helmet & your wearing all kinds of uncomfortable gear! :lol You are forced to visually scan all the elements in your surroundings & carefully proceed to your destination. If you don't, you might trip over a step, bump into a fellow fan, or fall flat on your face if you dont know exacly whats going on in front of you! :lol But seriously, once you get the full suit on & your out in public, & people are staring at you w/ awe because you are Boba Fett, (which they will if you have a good suit,) all of your Fett knowlege, be it from screen or novel, or comic book, will instantaniously "kick in," and you will feel confident in your ability to portray the character of Fett accurately! Of course that might be a bunch of Bull S***, but thats the way I feel when I'm in costume! :)
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
is chasing kids around the mall out of the fett character?:lol
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I remember starting this thread about a year ago, before I had ever worn my costume. Now that I've had some experience, I have to say that there is a certain...feel to being Fett. I spend a few minutes before I put on my helmet visualizing and trying to BECOME the character. I think about what a bad-*** I am about to become. Then I put on my helmet and I'm ready to roll. It's a sort of let-down to take the helmet off and become just myself again. (Is that weird?) I try very hard to stay in character whenever I am in public, regardless of whether stormtroopers are goofing off or whatever. The reactions from people who see me are so gratifying because of this!! :D
I think that members of my garrison have given me some of the highest compliments ever when they tell me that I have the walk and the nod "just right." (There is one guy who has asked me more than once to "do the nod!" because he wants to see it again :) ) Let me just say, I LOVE being Fett!!!!

I actually know exactly what you mean. The most I wore it was for five hours I think at a party, and it was such a let down to take it all off. I left the helmet on the entire night too. And I posted on the Jango counterpart to this thread just now, but I wanted to add a bit after I saw how you mentioned "the nod", etc. I think basically...not a bad idea is to just watch the movies. It's been established that "slow" isn't the way to go, but things like that nod, or the slow turn to look at someone (ala Lando) and such...just practice them. And yeah, one has to practice walking anyway because you can't see so well what you're stepping on (I accidentally kicked a sleeping dog with my spikes, oww). But there are key things in the movies that he does...or even come up with some of your own ones. But I dunno, it's like being a kid, playing dress up, just practice over and over being the character.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Wait a minute! Your helmet was on for FIVE hours straight! What was THAT like (besides unbearably hot!).
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
well....unbearably hot would cover it. I was outside a lot, and...to be somewhat crass, yet honest...there were some ladies there that had some...revealing outfits, and I may have taken a little advantage of the tinted visor. Also, yes, the beer straw is a good idea, and alcohol (plus just the joy of wearing it) makes it a lot more bearable. Is five hours a long time? I would have kept going if my DD hadn't needed to leave.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
So far I have only had the experienece of putting on my fett helmet, but whenever I do I automatically seem to put on the " fett-character ". I seem to move my head with ease and scan around, I even find my self moving at a deliberate pace, and I once I put on the imperial march Brandon is completely gone!
-
Re: You have to do his voice...
Wow, cool thread! I'm going from Sandtrooper to Fett and now I see the difference - Sandtroopers talk quite a bit, but I see how different Fett can be. If you talk - I have one request (well 2 actually) get a good amp and DO THE VOICE! I saw a Fett one time and he looked pretty real until he talked. The guy had this high-pitched voice that just shattered my whole impression of him :lol AHH it was hilarious ...and disappointing. So please... talk like this:
"As You Wish" | "No Good" | "Put Solo" | "Worth A Lot"
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Hey, most of you probably heard the part on the Bounty Hunter game where Jango says "As you wish..." and I thought he sounded pretty close to the guy who did Boba's voice. (I'm still hoping somebody somewhere figures out the effect the put on his voice during ADR in esb). BUt anyways, might not be a bad idea to have a slight touch of new zealand or british accent in there. And I mean slight guys, Americans tend to overdo it when they do faux-british. But yeah, I can imagine how disconcerting it would be to see an awesome costume, and then a voice that doesn't match at all.

What's ADR?
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Probably some post-production thing.
-
Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I believe it's Additional Dialogue Recording. Yes, post production...they do it way more than you'd think, because of background noise, or possibly accents, etc. James Earl Jones, for instance, was all ADR. Antonio Banderas has to ADR all his dialogue also, making it less latin sounding. So, they just sit in a studio and record into a nice clean mic, and then someone (in this case, probably Ben Burtt) tweeks it, adds resonance, or what ever, and makes it into Darth Vader, or Boba Fett, or what ever. Or even Jabba, anyone see the old Making Of for Jedi where they had the guy speaking Jabba's lines before they did the post work on it? It is hysterical.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
It was...what makes it particularly funny to me was that a friend of mine used to come up with random movie quotes, and one day he did that...it was this kinda raspy, muffled "Your Jedi mind powers...won't work on me...boy." And it just made me howl.
I assume that'll be on the dvd, when it comes out just before the Rapture. (sarcasm regarding the actual release of the dvds)

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
It is somewhat of a feeling of confidence when I suit up in the Fett Gear. My first outing was great! I wore my suit while pumping gas at a convenience store. It was great to see the reaction of the other people when you notice them staring at you and you give them that "cold nod" while at the pumps. Then I went to a drug store to get my wifes medicines. Everyone just seemed so respectful and when I got in line to pay...most of the patrons insisted that I went first! Hmmm,I wonder.......But it was great!
I recommend everyone to at least try that once!:D

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
wow! i tried the whole personal space thing today, and it worked like a charm. All these people were gathered around me instead of the ESB fett, and they were all staring at me, and one of them tried to grab my belt, and i brush there arm aside and slowly took a step forward and leaned right into there face. The eniter crowd took a step back imediately!
It was sooo, cool!
Than again, this was my first time in public in armor too!.
Gotta remember not to talk like a trooper, i kept adding the clicks, etc, before things kicked off! whoops. A few one liners worked too!
thanks for all the great info! will try better next time!

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Anyone ever had a person be annoyingly hostile to you while dressed as Fett? What did you do?
I was a Sandtrooper at a halloween event last year and a slightly taller, punk kid tried to get me to take my helmet off. I was staying totally in character. When I refused, he reached up and grabbed my helmet. When he did, I grabbed the skin of his gut and twisted hard while forcefully pushing him away. Still in character. The kid immediately backed off and apologized. It was great. And no one got hurt. Anyone have a Fett experience like this?

I have, I even have the original tape where they show that scene. The whole time, the guy speaks in english, but like you said, they changed it adding the Huttese language without changing much the voice tone.

Re: How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
I had someone grab the bottom of my helmet and try to pull it off, someone try to slap the side of my helmet when they were walking by, and more than one person touch or slap my armor in passing. For the first two, I knocked the offending arm aside and glared (for all the good it did when no one can see my face :) ). In the other instances, I try to ignore the person like they aren't any threat (keeping in character) since I probably wouldn't be able to do anything if I went after them anyway. An impotent Fett is, I think, worse than a Fett that ignores petty disturbances. So I tell myself.
It is so hard to see if people have bad intentions when I am wearing the helmet. I can't overemphasize the importance of having spotters! If I don't see it coming, I can't react, so having non-helmeted people keeping an eye out is very helpful. However, when I do see it coming, I get pretty angry. I don't want to hurt anyone, but I don't appreciate being touched and/or hit by random strangers, especially when I'm wearing my costume. If they break the rules of personal space, they shouldn't be surprised if I react by also breaking social norms and slapping their hand away. My two cents.

Re: *Official* How to play the part of Fett while in costume
I play Boba Fett like he acts in ESB in cloud city, Fett walks with a good stride, no waisted motion, and never turns his head much- He doesnt have to with his helmet. He also makes quick reflex movments like when He draws his gun or has to do anything action related. He doesnt waist any time doing his job.
I also notice when He turns to walk away He tilts his head downward to the side He turns to, When he is talking to someone He looks -right- at them. The few lines He has he looks directly at the person He is addressing.
He grips his belt pouches alot, and holds his gun upright, or across his other arm. that is about it.
Some people like to wave in parades and do other such things which is all fine and dandy, I just like to be Fett while I'm in costume.
one thing is for sure if you dont speak alot while in costume, when you do, or have to it gets peoples attention emmiediatly.

*Official* How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
Just thought I'd tell you guys; I BIG got a kick out of this. I've easily corrupted my sister into the SW fandom. Who's her favorite? I was surprised as anyone when she said 'that guy with the helmet next to Vader in ESB'. Long story short, my helmet came in (she didn't know anything about it). I sanded it down to the original colors, taped the visor in for a temporary wearing, and walked in her room around 2:30 last night. I leaned over her bed, did the best Fett impression I could without an amp and said, "Wake up- you're going for a ride". She LOST IT! I felt so bad after that- :evil

Heh, Heh, Heh. :lol :lol
You should have gone the Back to the Future route and used a bit of Van Halen and a walkman!!!

What's with digging up all the old threads Sniffer? Are the newest threads not sniffable enough?

Thanks for bringing this back to the front page. Some of us newer guys haven't seen this one and it makes for some great information. I do have to agree about falling into character when you are in the helmet. At my first trooping event even though I was not a Boba or Jango (Custom Mando) I felt the part. I moved with the authority of someone that knew what he was doing and was able to part crowds quickly without saying a word (and yes you cannot see ****, and as my wife says, it feels like you are wearing a CAR!). I had a lot of people want to talk to me and take pictures but most would not come near me. I had one woman gesture to me by waving her hand at me until I looked at her. She didn't even want to speak to me wanted a pic. It's all about how you want to play your character but being an intimidating figure that doesn't talk a lot is always the most memorable for most of the people who are coming out to see you.
I hated taking the helmet off but it was way too hot for me to keep it on the full time. I have devised a way to build in some additional air flow into my next one but since my first bucket was a Rubies, there was no room for a fan.

You just can't help but get the look and head tilt when wearing a mando bucket, no matter who your character is.

This thread is an excellent read. It gives me some excellent advice for my inaugural wearing of my Fett in public. Thanks Sniffer!

Re: *Official* How to play the part of Fett while in costume...
just one thing to say about the "slow walk". from what see of fett in ESB, he doesn't walk all that slow. he walks purposefully. i mean, after he talks to vader while han is being tortured, he turns and walks away rather quickly. whenever he's with vader he speeds up his walk. but that may just be because vader is a powerwalker.
one question: i'm saving up for a bobamaker armor set, seeing as i'm not talented enough to make my own professional looking armor (i can do bucket armor, but that can only go so far). i was just wondering, about how much does a full, painted set cost? i want to set a goal for my money

I always put a few coins in my shinpockets so that they jingle when i walk... sounds almost like spurrs and the reaction from the crowd when they hear it is truely funny... try it out!
