Funny you mention it Cruzer, Ct.net is loaded with the Mando also lately it seems. Most pm's I get over there usually have the first sentence written in it.I don't have time to find a translation, so I'm as lost as you if somebody writes to me in it.
The Mando'a dictionary can be downloaded in excel format from Kar'buir's website.
"What is this song all about?
Can't figure any lyrics out.
How do the words to it go?
I wish you'd tell me. I don't know." - Weird Al
You guys are terrible!
Voltaire, did what you say actually mean something?...becuase I won't even attempt a translation!
And I hear you Steelblitz, I had someone send me a PM with some of that stuff in it, and I just told them I had no idea what they were saying. It's cool and all, but until I commit it to memory I don't have time to translate that stuff either. May be old age setting in or something.
Thanks ShatirLavan, do you have a link?
Here is a link to the language translation for Mandalorian (Mando’a). Adobe Reader is needed to open link. http://www.starwars.com/eu/lit/novel...a_language.pdf
Now That's hilarious....
Nicely done!![]()
does Kar'buir's translate to Clam Lord?
my guess is kar'buir = karen traviss , the author that wrote the mandalorian language.
i think this is sort of like that ever popular split between movie accuracy nuts and customs.
some of the folk here are recreating a specific thing from a movie (like, say boba or jango!), and don't care much about the books / backstory / EU that surrounds it all.
then others are really into the expressive stuff... customs with backstories and language and all that sort of thing.
i've read a couple of the EU books with heavy fett stories, but i don't really get into it much.
Kar'buir would be Karen Traviss =) Good guess TK7602.
Yes, customs predominantly follow mando'a, and even then it's not all customs who use Mando'a. I do from time to time in my posts on the Mercs site. It's part of the new Mando popularity.
Cool. The vocabulary on that pdf link is pretty extensive. I have a hard enough time still learning spanish...so I'm out.
To each his own, I guess, when it comes to the films vs. EU.![]()
Is there a test on this later...?
Should I be taking notes??![]()

Who are we to judge my brothers and dear friends. A name is a name. For you see, there can only be one Sniffer!
LOL!
Right there with ya. I like the Fetts onscreen, and too have read a few of the Boba Fett stories in books, but have never once even tried to go looking for a "real Mandalorian language" to speak ( to whom? ). Boba's the original from the movies, I'll just stick with him, thanks.
I dunno...it all seems very Trekkie to me. I thought they had the corner on the whole imaginary language thing with the Klingon stuff. C'mon people, in the whole Geek hierarchy, Star Wars has always been above Star Trek.![]()

Wow, I officially love this thread...
Meh, you guys are just sad you didn't think of it first.
Personally, I put Karen Traviss on the same level of writer as Tolkien. If you know anything about the guy, you know he created multiple languages and an entire history of Middle Earth, not just the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The languages (Sindarin, Qenya, Khuzdul, Black Tongue) help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the world he created. Same thing goes with Karen's writing. The addition of Mando'a and all the cultural elements she writes into the stories give them so much more realism than a lot of SW authors. Her characters actually feel like real people with families and jobs and relationship problems, rather than the flawless heroes that so many people in the SW universe are.
Hehe there are three kinds of fans - movie fans, EU fans and the-whole-dish nerds such as meself :-)
But I agree, I always was into Star Wars having a language, and I'm glad it's Mandalorian. For me, Boba is a bounty hunter though... never got him in my mind as being a Mandalorian -- he just wears the uniform of a Mando Protector. That's one of the things I disagree with Traviss (Making Boba Mandalore), but I think she's a great writer and has contributed greatly to the SW saga. But each has different opinions, and there's respect hopefully between these groups.
Oh and one thing - even though your costume can't be "screen" accurate, there's no reason it can't be realistic and interesting. There are a couple of Customs that are great, and a couple that are terrible.
My name's Icelandic though.![]()
hi, the republic commando books have alot of mando language in them, triple zero has a reference in the back of the book to help translate, i think it adds depth to the mando culture.
I th'ink Ka'ren T'rav'iss' he'ad h'as got'te'n a' lit'tle t'oo big'. S'he's be'ing wo'rship'ed an'd sh'e l'oves 'it.
I think thats kinda childish of you to post that honestly. She's an author thats helping promote the idea that your costume comes from...Star Wars.
Before people start taking this thread somewhere it shouldn't go, we need to realize two things. 1. There are different types of fandom. 2. Someone who is helping drive the universe your costume comes from shouldn't be trashed for her hard work. Karen doesn't care for the fame honestly as she has said her job is to write books, perhaps you should get to know her before making presumptuous statements Andy.
For anyone who has a problem with people using Mando'a names...I say get over it and learn to respect every facet of what Star Wars has to offer people. I would think this community wants to be friendly with all Star Wars fans, because working together and being tolerable is what helps Star Wars costuming grow as a whole.
I have met Karen Traviss several times in the past, as well as being her personal bodyguard for an hour at C4 because she didn't want to be alone for fear of a fan attacking her due to the Mara Jade fiasco. I have met, worked with, hung out, and have personal contact information to scores of other celebrities, and what I have learned in the past is that most celebrities want to be treated like normal human beings.
Karen Traviss is an extremely nice woman, she's just getting a TON of attention for a little language that seems to be taken way too seriously. If her work disappointed her fans, she would feel bad, but she's constantly been succeeding and from what I've seen, she enjoys the attention way too much.
Then if that's the case...why would you post what you did? I'm sure if she saw that she wouldn't appreciate it at all.
She actually uses mando'a quite a bit on her message group. She's very passionate about her characters, just like many Mandalorian costumers are passionate about their characters. Why people want to ridicule another for using a Star Wars language to describe their Star Wars costume, or even post on a Star Wars related forum is honestly beyond me.
These kinds of comments only alienate a part of the Star Wars costuming community that has as much right to do what they like as you do. If you don't like reading posts with mando'a in them, learn the language or browse over them. Otherwise it's going to fire up ALOT of people when they see posts such as these.
Well I see we have the same things in common, ie. Bodyguards to the stars and having personal contact information to them.. But keep in mind there Fame is what WE thrust upon them. Also, Keep in mind George Lucas has given Karen the Rights to write these books.. No pressure there. And as for her enjoying it, How could you not when you have the greatest fans around coming up to you at conventions. And SW fans are the best. Just hang out with (I have) and ask Peter Mayhew, David Prowse or Duel with Ray Park for the fun of it (just to name a few). These people Love Us and show it. (Sorry Peter, David, Ray, to throw your name around.)
I beg to differ...

These are all Mandalorian costumes that come from books. Unless you read them (the books), you don't really have any idea how to make them. I'd say the books and the costumes have alot to do with the other.
You said the magic sentence, knowing the EU and not knowing it doesn't make anyone less of a costumer then the other. I'm glad you realize that, because thats the exact point I'm trying to make.
Now, the reason I take the defensive on threads and posts like this is because people here don't realize that they hurt other's feelings with these kinds of posts. Luckily, I'm here to make sure that people know it is hurtful to others, and I will continue to make it known until everyone wakes up and sees it for themselves.
I am not even going to bother...
Whoa, I didn't even know there was a whole Mando language that has been put together. That's pretty amazing. I thought there were just a word or two, I had no idea there was a whole vocabulary.
So it's acceptable to costume as a character from a movie, but not a book? A person can't use their own creative license to design and build a suit of armour based on written description? Must they stick to accurately replicating a costume that was made for a movie rather than using their own imagination? Andy, I'm trying to see where you're coming from, but I really can't see things from your point of view. Don't get me wrong, I love to see a well-done Boba as much as the next guy, but characters from literature have their place too.
Indeed there is. It's really quite the accomplishment. Mando'a gives the characters a lot of added depth. A lot can be done with language.
Take Jabba the Hutt for example. He can understand basic just fine, and he could probably speak it if he wanted to. He just prefers not to. Why? Because it is a manifestation of his power. He thinks of Huttese as a "better" language than basic, putting himself above those he interacts with. His use of a translator is pure self-indulgence; something to display his wealth and hedonism. This is a facet of Hutt culture. The Hutts believe themselves to be a superior race, and often do hold more power, as is seen in various examples such as Jabba, Gardulla, Aarba, etc.
Similarly, the Mandalorians think of themselves as better than other cultures. They refer to themselves as Mando'ade (Children of Mandalore), and everyone else as aruetiise (outsiders). Mandalorians have such a rich identity; they are defined by how well they maintain their culture. One of the resol nare (six actions) is to speak Mando'a. This is similar to how there are language laws in Quebec to maintain the French language. The Quebecois are incredibly passionate about keeping English influences from taking over the province, which must be extremely difficult for them being a part of a primarily Anglophone country. They have laws for building signage, radio and television programming, and even customer service saying both "Hello," and "Bonjour." I think they do a fine job of maintaining their culture, and despite their repeated attempts at separatism, value the inclusion of Quebec as a part of Canada.
- disclaimer. my view. not that of TDH or its staff. i'm just a guy with a keyboard -
historically, this board has been about boba and jango more than anything.
hence the "boba & jango fett elite costuming forums" subtitle.
i don't think it's so much that folks actively have a problem with the world outside of that as it is that some people here are here just for that little tiny slice, and have no interest in anything beyond that.
take me. i've checked out the mercs site. neat stuff, some really cool ideas, but just not my thing. i really only care about the original 3 movies, and sorta ROTS but not overly much.
for me, it's about bringing to life this character from my childhood. i want to BE that character in every way when i'm at an event. that covers both posture and lines and minute details of the suit (i have had kids that are big fans comment on things like the darts on my gauntlet or my toe spikes)
i find myself very grounded in the "real world" stuff... is this scratch right, is this the right part, when the actor raised the rifle, how did he shift his weight.
i'm not as interested in the history and growth of the character boba fett as i am the collection of props, parts and acting that made up what was seen on screen.
and to me, that's always been the difference between the hardcore boba folks vs. the customs.
neither is better or worse, they are just sufficiently different that one side often has a hard time understanding the other.
Thank you, Brian. That explains a good deal of what I was missing.
I suppose I have a hard time understanding why people want to costume as Fett or clones, but then not learn anything about the Mandalorian culture. It's like an Obi-Wan costumer not wanting to learn about the Jedi order. It doesn't make sense to me in terms of portrayal of the character while trooping.
However, when you brought up how your only real interest is in the original trilogy, and the desire to use the material that is seen on screen as opposed to an all-encompassing version of the character that would influence how you act when trooping, I could see where you were coming from a little clearer. It's not a point of view I share, but when you explained it like that, I can see that it works for you quite well. Again, thanks.
Well most clones other than RCs and nulls the mando heritage really wasnt there. They werent trained by mandos and most of the encounters they had with them were in battle on opposite sides.
And in Boba's case he couldnt even speak mando. So not caring about the EU aspect of him actually fits his personality pretty well.
Well, Boba was a reluctant Mandalorian. He fully embraced the combat and survival instincts that Jango instilled in him, and he certainly carried a great deal of respect for his father, but he did not want to interact with the other Mandalorians. Even though he later became Mandalore, I have a feeling it was more due to his reputation than his desire to lead. As for Mando'a, Boba probably knew a fair bit when he was a kid, but lost it over time. I mean, when I was 15 I could construct a whole paragraph in French, but now I would be lost if I tried to ask someone directions in Quebec. Boba regained some knowledge of Mando'a during the LOTF era, but was never really fluent in it.
It was Huttese.
I think it was more of a son's love for a father and a father given his offspring tools to survive in the wrold. He could of proably cared less if his father was mandalorian or not.
And i remember reading him wanting to set his helmet translator to be able to translate mando for him. But +1 on your language comparison, i could understand some korean when i was younger and now iam totally lost.
Guys, this bickering needs to stop. Cruzer wanted to know about board names, and the thread turned into hot air vent pretty quickly. This is why people are leaving the board. We're all here for costuming, whether it be movie or EU, so put your differences aside and grow up.
Star Wars is not real, it is not worth arguing about.
This thing with Karen I don't get. She's a writer, she's created a language and culture to aid in the writing of her stories. That's exactly what happened with Star Trek's Klingons. Okay.... everyone takes the osik* out of Klingon costumers, but Klingonese (as I'm told it's called, i don't speak it!) adds depth to the characters of Star Trek and Mando'a does the same for Mandalorians. What's wrong with that? It makes the world more 3 dimensional. And yes it's in Expanded Universe books and games as opposed to the films, does that make it any the less legit? It's still Lucas approved, shouldn't that be enough? I realise that there are people out there that don't want to learn i, that have no interest in it, it's your choice.
As to Karen's head being too big and loving being worshipped! Grow up! Here's a reality check, the cult of celebrity IS all about being worshipped. Look at Tom Cruise, J K Rowling or any rock band, it's all about being seen and loved by people that enjoy what you do. If you get famous (even in the relatively small world of Star Wars novels (yes I know Karen has written more then just Star Wars, I own copies of them) then you enjoy being noticed. Hell even TDH's members are the same, with people posting images of themselves in this or that magazine, show or news article. Okay it's not the same scale but it IS the same thing.
Early this year Karen was a guest at KOTE's Spaceport event in Liverpool. She was such a good guest we have invited her back for Spaceport 3 in a few months time. During the weekend long event she was not only friendly but very approachable, joining us for breakfast the second day and I hasten to add NOT being the centre of attention, simply being someone else at the table that enjoys a fantasy universe the same as the rest of us. Doesn't sound big headed to me.
EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion on what they like or don't like. whether they are fans of the films, the original trilogy only, the whole Star Wars universe (EU included) or just certain areas of it. It doesn't make one type of fans superior to another. Don't forget, to the rest of the world, we are ALL weird and geekish.
As already pointed out, it's not real. Why all the arguing?
*sorry to use Mando'a. I tried to keep it in but it just popped out!
that, in my eyes, really sums up the disconnect that causes so many disputes.
i on the other hand never really get when a bunch of jedi costumers get so engrossed in it that they call each other master and padawan, and get so engrossed in the backstory of it.
i have a jedi costume, and i play the part for kids if i'm wearing it, but i'm no more in tune with the force than i am a llama
i think its easy for both types of folks to co-exist, but we all need to remember the differences.
the mando-fans out there gotta remember that the movie folk won't get it when they use words with lots of ks and apostrophes, and the move folks need to remember that there's more to life than just boba and jango.
*GROUP HUG*
From what I gather, there's no denying Travis great contributions to SW, whether EU or background to the films. While I have never concerned myself with Travis' work, I have the utmost respect for her efforts as I'm sure creating all of those stories and an entirely new fictional language is no easy task.
Maybe some day I'll pick up one of her books, and will probably end up enjoying it thoroughly. But until then, I respect that others have already acquired an affection towards her work. For me to slander those who use Travis' fictional language for novelty purposes...is kinda like "the pot calling the kettle, black"...as I am guilty of going out in public in a SW costume.
If anyone familar with Travis' works can suggest what book I might pick up first, please post the Title/s. They sound like some enjoyable reading for my son and I during our winter vacation.
Thanks everyone for the healthy discussion and humorously playful back-and-forth in this thread.![]()

If you can't say something nice, or at least something constructive, get off the playground, 'cause you're a party pooper.
As for a good starting point, if you're interested in the Republic Commando books, start with Hard Contact and go from there. There are some more "adult" stuff in the books, but really nothing that hasn't been in the movies, and the characters use Mando'a equivalents of bad words. Nothing too bad though. Not sure how old your son is, but it should be okay.
I hope you and your son enjoy reading the books together if you decide to!
I got a good laugh out of some of the initial comments that were made just out of pure fun and in the spirit of teasing each other. Needles to say in my wife's eyes...I'll always be just one big nerdy kid!
Well, i just ordered the hardcover copy of Republic Commando: Hard Contact & Triple Zero from Amazon.com, so I look forward to having it in my hands in a few days. I prefer hardcovers over paperbacks so I couldn't resist. If the book's any good, I'll probably pick up the Bloodlines hardcover next...
...and only after reading that will I begin bombarding everyone's PM boxes with entire sentences consisting of nothing but Mando'a.(especially the PM boxes of all those Arizona/Nevada guys)
Thanks for the recommendation, MandoMan.![]()

Brian, once again you're the voice of reason in a sea of chaos.
Guys, they're just books and movies. No one's opinions are better than anyone else's. We ALL have opinions. Let's just try and remember that we're all allowed to express them but we all certainly do not have to agree with them.
Like Brian said, this forum started out as an exclusive forum to discuss how to build the best BOBA FETT costume you could. Seeing how there were sufficient interest and overlap related to Boba from Jango fans.... that costume was included as well. Eventually as a favor to a friend, Zam was included as well. Now over the past few years there's been this influx of custom fans.
Speaking as someone who's not entirely a fan of customs personally (here's that part about people's OPINIONS folks) I will not normally read threads that pertain to them. That doesn't mean I have to "dis" them or insult them, I will just normally not read them. I won't push my views down on custom costumers telling them they're wrong and they shouldn't waste their time on building "fake" costumes... that'd be ridiculous. In the same vein, fans of customs shouldn't go on a Boba and Jango forum and expect everyone to jump to their knees bowing down before them to accept them. You can't force someone to like something they aren't interested in.
The short version of my long winded post is this... there's room for everyone... no one should feel they're better than anyone else and many of us here could stand to learn a little bit about RESPECT.
