This thing with Karen I don't get. She's a writer, she's created a language and culture to aid in the writing of her stories. That's exactly what happened with Star Trek's Klingons. Okay.... everyone takes the osik* out of Klingon costumers, but Klingonese (as I'm told it's called, i don't speak it!) adds depth to the characters of Star Trek and Mando'a does the same for Mandalorians. What's wrong with that? It makes the world more 3 dimensional. And yes it's in Expanded Universe books and games as opposed to the films, does that make it any the less legit? It's still Lucas approved, shouldn't that be enough? I realise that there are people out there that don't want to learn i, that have no interest in it, it's your choice.

As to Karen's head being too big and loving being worshipped! Grow up! Here's a reality check, the cult of celebrity IS all about being worshipped. Look at Tom Cruise, J K Rowling or any rock band, it's all about being seen and loved by people that enjoy what you do. If you get famous (even in the relatively small world of Star Wars novels (yes I know Karen has written more then just Star Wars, I own copies of them) then you enjoy being noticed. Hell even TDH's members are the same, with people posting images of themselves in this or that magazine, show or news article. Okay it's not the same scale but it IS the same thing.
Early this year Karen was a guest at KOTE's Spaceport event in Liverpool. She was such a good guest we have invited her back for Spaceport 3 in a few months time. During the weekend long event she was not only friendly but very approachable, joining us for breakfast the second day and I hasten to add NOT being the centre of attention, simply being someone else at the table that enjoys a fantasy universe the same as the rest of us. Doesn't sound big headed to me.

EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion on what they like or don't like. whether they are fans of the films, the original trilogy only, the whole Star Wars universe (EU included) or just certain areas of it. It doesn't make one type of fans superior to another. Don't forget, to the rest of the world, we are ALL weird and geekish.

As already pointed out, it's not real. Why all the arguing?

*sorry to use Mando'a. I tried to keep it in but it just popped out!

I suppose I have a hard time understanding why people want to costume as Fett or clones, but then not learn anything about the Mandalorian culture. It's like an Obi-Wan costumer not wanting to learn about the Jedi order. It doesn't make sense to me in terms of portrayal of the character while trooping.

that, in my eyes, really sums up the disconnect that causes so many disputes.

i on the other hand never really get when a bunch of jedi costumers get so engrossed in it that they call each other master and padawan, and get so engrossed in the backstory of it.

i have a jedi costume, and i play the part for kids if i'm wearing it, but i'm no more in tune with the force than i am a llama :)

i think its easy for both types of folks to co-exist, but we all need to remember the differences.

the mando-fans out there gotta remember that the movie folk won't get it when they use words with lots of ks and apostrophes, and the move folks need to remember that there's more to life than just boba and jango.

From what I gather, there's no denying Travis great contributions to SW, whether EU or background to the films. While I have never concerned myself with Travis' work, I have the utmost respect for her efforts as I'm sure creating all of those stories and an entirely new fictional language is no easy task.

Maybe some day I'll pick up one of her books, and will probably end up enjoying it thoroughly. But until then, I respect that others have already acquired an affection towards her work. For me to slander those who use Travis' fictional language for novelty purposes...is kinda like "the pot calling the kettle, black"...as I am guilty of going out in public in a SW costume.

If anyone familar with Travis' works can suggest what book I might pick up first, please post the Title/s. They sound like some enjoyable reading for my son and I during our winter vacation.

Thanks everyone for the healthy discussion and humorously playful back-and-forth in this thread.(y)

Well said, Cruzer. (y) There is no reason for this thread to have gone in some of the directions it did, but there was some rational and polite comments as well, showing that there is still hope for a mutual understanding of each others interests. We all dress up in costumes, go out in public, and have fun, and the public has fun too. That's what it's about. FUN. If you can't say something nice, or at least something constructive, get off the playground, 'cause you're a party pooper.

As for a good starting point, if you're interested in the Republic Commando books, start with Hard Contact and go from there. There are some more "adult" stuff in the books, but really nothing that hasn't been in the movies, and the characters use Mando'a equivalents of bad words. Nothing too bad though. Not sure how old your son is, but it should be okay.

I hope you and your son enjoy reading the books together if you decide to!

I got a good laugh out of some of the initial comments that were made just out of pure fun and in the spirit of teasing each other. Needles to say in my wife's eyes...I'll always be just one big nerdy kid!

Well, i just ordered the hardcover copy of Republic Commando: Hard Contact & Triple Zero from Amazon.com, so I look forward to having it in my hands in a few days. I prefer hardcovers over paperbacks so I couldn't resist. If the book's any good, I'll probably pick up the Bloodlines hardcover next(y)...

...and only after reading that will I begin bombarding everyone's PM boxes with entire sentences consisting of nothing but Mando'a.;)(especially the PM boxes of all those Arizona/Nevada guys)

Thanks for the recommendation, MandoMan.:cheers

Brian, once again you're the voice of reason in a sea of chaos.

Guys, they're just books and movies. No one's opinions are better than anyone else's. We ALL have opinions. Let's just try and remember that we're all allowed to express them but we all certainly do not have to agree with them.

Like Brian said, this forum started out as an exclusive forum to discuss how to build the best BOBA FETT costume you could. Seeing how there were sufficient interest and overlap related to Boba from Jango fans.... that costume was included as well. Eventually as a favor to a friend, Zam was included as well. Now over the past few years there's been this influx of custom fans.

Speaking as someone who's not entirely a fan of customs personally (here's that part about people's OPINIONS folks) I will not normally read threads that pertain to them. That doesn't mean I have to "dis" them or insult them, I will just normally not read them. I won't push my views down on custom costumers telling them they're wrong and they shouldn't waste their time on building "fake" costumes... that'd be ridiculous. In the same vein, fans of customs shouldn't go on a Boba and Jango forum and expect everyone to jump to their knees bowing down before them to accept them. You can't force someone to like something they aren't interested in.

The short version of my long winded post is this... there's room for everyone... no one should feel they're better than anyone else and many of us here could stand to learn a little bit about RESPECT.
