Need Help from those in the CGI field

I have a class, where we are supposed to ask a proff. or osmeone that's works in our chosen major 5 questions. I know there are some here that work with such and if you could answer the following it'd be appreicated since I have to write this tonight and tomorrow.

1. Does a college education help , or would it iprove what you already do?
2. What is the job market like for cgi?
3. What personal quality makes working with computers desireable?
4. How much time does a project consume?
5. What programs are commonly used?

If those of you could throw out some answers it'd be appreciated Thanks a lot ahead of time.

When you say CGI do you mean Pixar/Dreamworks/ILM and thesich because I have some friends that could answer those. I'll pass the questions along.

I just need answers from anyone who has done cgi stuff, I know we have members here who have done fan made stuff where they made 3D models etc.... anyone can answer, but yeah if you could get one of them to get me some answers like asap, it'd be great. In the meantime anyone with experience with doing effects please answer so I have backups

I'll answer what I know and have experienced and if I get more I'll let you know.
1) A degree definitely helps especially if you hope to be accepted by the larger studios.
2) The job market has a lot of opportunities but the larger studios look for certain people/qualities and also look for certain recommendations.
3) The studios typically look for a person who is personable and can get along with the others because it's kind of like a family at those places. They look for innovators and people that an think outside the box. gFod team working skills are also important.
4). The length depends on what part of the project you are assigned and it's intensiveness.
5)Maya, Lightwave, 3Ds Max, zBrush, Mudbox are some programs that are used. Some companies are partial to certain ones and it also depends on what the project is.

Also, suggestion for your portfolio, do NOT include cars, robots, and buxom girls. You will get overlooked.
