Hi TDHers,
Today was my final "duty day" in the US Air Force. I'm retiring effective Jan 1st, 2011. I began my military career on April 10th, 1987, so by the time my official retirement date rolls around I will have logged 8,667 days in the Air Force!! That's 23 years 8 months 21 days. This Monday will begin my outprocessing and terminal leave days.
I've been proud to serve my country over the years and have had some amazing and unforgettable experiences. I've been stationed at 6 different bases on 3 continents and now it's time to begin a new phase in my life.
I've made good friends here on TDH just as I have in the military, and just wanted to share a milestone day in my life and career! (y)

My dad retired with 20 years in 1976, we lived in Portsmouth, VA then so it,s a good place to start a new life oh yeah and that monthly check for the rest of your life isnt a bad thing either! CONGRATS!

Congrats mate, I recently retired from the Australian Army after 20+ years, got a nice pay out and my defence pension and now I'm enjoying life for the moment before I decide what to do for here on.
It takes a while to get used to the civy life and not being around the military and the people you've know and work with for so long but dam it's good to just be able to relax for a change.
Be sure to take some time for yourself and enjoy life you deserve it, and all the best with whatever you decide to do next.

Congrats, Eric!

Thank you for your service! What's the first habit from 23 years in the military that you're looking forward to breaking?

:cheers

Congrats on your milestone. I think the "first habit" comment above is really funny. No more hospital corners? Go buy some
fitted sheets for your 'bunk' airman... you've earned them! lol Thanks for your contribution to a better, safer world SJ.

Nice! Congrats! I was just where you are now. I had my retirement ceremony on 27 May and my final day of active duty was 31 August. It flew by. I would say one of the most noticeable "habits" was trying to put on a hat that I no longer had every time I went outside. :) Congrats again, brother!

Thanks again, everyone. :)
The first habit I'm gonna try to break is waking up at 5:00 AM when I don't have to!!! Drives me crazy. 5:00 AM every day, even on the weekends when I don't set my alarm. Just *bing!* wide awake. Aaarrggh. . . I mean I'll go back to sleep for a while, but I need to reset my internal alarm. :wacko

A little late chiming in, but CONGRATULATIONS! I served 12 (AF) and left voluntarily. kinda wished I'd stayed in now! Oh well....so goes life! Thanks for your service brother!
