My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Well here it is, my latest creation. Briareos from Appleseed. It's ready for molding as you see it, and I'm looking for some final critique. Sculpted out of bondo, apoxie sculpt, great stuff, mdf board, pvc pipe and other things. I'll post pics of the finished helm when I'm done. There will be a light kit of red or green and a clear lense for the center eye to see through. Whatcha think?

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
gorgeous mate! been searching web hi and low for ages - and was surprised to find no one had done one?!?!
I have been researching this for a while now myself - and was planning a clay sculpt come Nov. You've also based it on the recent updates ie the appelseed CGI movies rather than the original anime/comics - which is wot my research was on and the look I prefer!
My original plan had been to do a 2-part lid, the face/ear modules; and then a helmet bit; and have the 4 lens bit as a resin cast attaching to the ear mold. I was worried abt the detail being lost whilst molding as a one-piece.
Not that I could do better - but wot abt detailing where the small double lens meets the ear pience anteriorly? Not a huge image - but looked liked it was a little more grooved here
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o...riareos_01.jpg
you seemed to have got the subtle curves at the back where the rabbit-ear ball and socket joint meets lid - very nice.
How did u solve problem with the rabbit ears? I was worrired abt weight myself?
soz abt all the comments - its stuff that been bouncing abt my own head for a while. It is truly a gorgeous sculpt, top class. Am I glad someone with skill did it rather than wot would have a poor attempt by a part-time sculptor like myself :P
I waanttsssesss it, I neeeeedddsseesss it....ppprrreeeecccciiiiooooouuusussssseess

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Russ. Amazing work yet again! Love it.
-
Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Thanks all for the compliments. You were right about it being more grooved where the double lenses meets the ear, but I had to cheat it out a little to make sure there was room inside to make it wearable. As far as the weight of the ears, I'll have to see what works best, solid cast or hand lay fiberglass.
When I've finished the mold and get parts from it, and have a finished piece to show, I'll post an "INTERESTED" thread. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted!

very nice. pm'd
definately put me on an interested list. Although I may have to raid my fund for gettin a TE2 finished stormtrooper lid :D
oh forgot to ask - size wise; is this as small as the iron man helmet? or made for a more generic "big lug"?
Nate

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I don't know the character but my gods... this looks so stunning, your sculpting skills are more then amazing... how do you go about the casting proces now then?
-
Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
As far as size goes, it's much bigger than my Iron Man helmet. Unless you are Andre the Giant you'll probably have no problem. Measurements are; 35" in diameter at center,10 1/2" wide(9" at deep groove in ears), 13" from chin to top, 9" from behind jaw to top,the ears are 15 1/2", and it's 11" from the center eye to back of head.
As far as molding and casting, as we speak I'm determining my seam lines for the mold, probably two part silicone, and three to four part mother mold. I may be able to cast it as on whole piece through the helmet opening. The ears will be seperate and cast with all-thread and then bolted in place.
-
Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
roger that russ ta for replies. Nah - I got me a standard head, measurements look spot on. Only other Briareos lid I've seen before was the PA one at D-Con.
RBF - if u dont know the character; have a look into either the manga or CGI movies; both are amazing bits of work, DR's work definately fits in well there. Surprised that there wasnt more available for the characters helmet over the years.
I would also like take this opportunity to publically apologise to community and moderators for my language in my 1st post in this thread. No intentional offense was meant. :o:( Reviewed COC, soaped my mouth and forewarned for next time.
ps Russ - u quoted my remarks in ur reply to me which still containts the offending word right at the start - would u mind editing out for me too pls
Cheers

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Definitely amazing work on your Bri helmet sculpt! It's great to see Appleseed getting some love. :love
I'm currently in the planning stages of a movie-verse Deunan, so color me really interested if you happen to do a run of this helm!

Deunan huh... Head sculpt, costume or what? I'd love to have one for my Bri. I was considering making a wig for my wife and trying to put costumes together. Her hair style is really cool but not sure how it"ll transilate into actual wig prop.
Color me interested if you make something wearable, or static bust would be nice too. Hmmnn. let me know what your up to.

Costume. Ex Machina-style ESWAT gear to be exact. Now that my Hot Toys Deunan finally arrived from Japan, I plan on starting with the headband (w/ the targeting eye patch) on a lifecast bust I have. Then moving on to the bodysuit with the help of a seamstress.
As for the hair, I'm going to go the route of getting it cut/styled since I wear my hair short and have a similar hair color anyway. I'm assuming you're thinking of her hairstyle in the movie? I think it could translate pretty well into a wig too. You could maybe commission someone who makes anime cosplay wigs due to the style. Her 80's style do's from the comics would probably be a little trickier though, lol.

...ooo resilient - would love to see how the ESWAT body armour works out. I want to do a CGI Briareos... and now since DR has got a nice lid going - might try to get forearm armour sorted 1st. Then chest/ab plate...
Russ - if u wanted to get in touch with a cosplay wigmaker - I know a good one, although she mostly does Cloud from FFVII. Only prob is shes based in UK.

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
will do mate - gonna try for arms 1st - CGI style ofc. 2nd time I am trying a sculpt - so dont expect quick results man.
Was also gonna be interested in the Deunan body armour idea from Resilience - not sure how I will approach that yet
we should get a Project Appleseed section :D
u noticed some Appleseed replica ordance on the Bay atm - its from a dutch guy? Unfortuantely its ordance from the original animation movie I think.

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
DangerRuss,
Would it be possible to add more detail especialy in the rabbit ear base area where there looks to be a screw, and the forhead area where there is finer engraving details? Possibly some extra lines around the mouth parts? The area under the left/ right eyes seems to have a dip also from my first image. Maybe more detail on the rear eyes where they connect to the ball?
I uploaded some shots from the Blue ray version...

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Very good observations. I took some liberty to the details to make it easier for molding. Also had to make some changes to make it an actual wearable helmet. As far as detail in the forehead, I had planned on having decals or stickers made for the logos in front and on back. Thanks for your input, I'm trying to make it as detailed and accurate as humanly possible. Thanks,Russell Quote:

Here is an example of the light(s). This one is yellow(only one I have right now) and is not lit in the pic but the light kit will be green or red. It's a LED. 7 lights will be in the light kit. 5 in front, 2 in back. The one for the center eye will be placed behind the clear lense and be detachable for when you want to wear it and see through it. Will be attached to a portable power source. This light kit will be available in the finished helm price, and for those who want the raw cast I'll include it for my cost. Quote:

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I have a question... What are you going to be making these Helmets for?
For a Halloween Party?
For the sake of making it?
Just wondering, Anyways keep it up
-
Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I would love to finish the whole costume for this halloween, but I'm afraid that won't be possible. To many parts to make. I'll probably have the helmet done and shoulder armor, and I might just cheat the rest of the costume for now, close enough. But I've really fell in love with this characters style and do plan on completing the whole costume. Next year!
But I do it for the sake of making it as well. It's an art form, I'm a sculptor, helps me express my talent and gain some fans while not being judged. Well, at least I've gotten nothing but positive feedback from here and therpf. Thanks!

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I got my first pull! As you can see, some minor clean up is to be done along the seam line, also in some areas there will need to be some filling of air bubbles in the deep parts of the mold (eye details ), where the material trappped air. I primed the mold with sandable primer, then I used a brush on urethane ( shell shock ) for the print coat and backed it with fiberglass. It is very strong and feels like a football helmet. Vision is good as far as seeing thru the center lense. Plenty of ventilation with the openness under helmet, and room for small fans if neeed. Room for the light kit as well, power pack tbd. Moving on to the clean up and attaching the ears, when I get a clean shot all post again! WooHoo!:D

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
lookin good there Russ.
I am kinda new to the materials so apologies if wrong terminology used, just interested in some of the methods -
(1) I liked the idea of sandable primer for the most superficial layer - is that a standard procedure?
(2) Looked up smooth on site - is urethane plastic the same as polurethane? And do u use the slow or fast stuff? Also did u just use 1 layer or several?
(3) FG backup - just the sheets + resin type stuff - similiar to stuff used for car body work I take it?
(4) I have seen some other FG interiors looking quite rough - are u planning on putting roto resin on the inside?
Have fun on clean up! cant wait to see finished product mate.
soz to hear abt the IM mold btw mate :(

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
1. spray the mold with mold realease, then sandable primer, makes the pull easier to sand and comes out primed!
2. Not the same but polyESTER:) resin will mechanically and chemically lock with the shell -shock print coat.
3.yes
4. It all depends on who is laying up the glass:D Quote:

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
Russ,
Are you doing a layer at a time? If so how do you avoid delamination?
Thanks,
Lou
-
Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
In the pic above you see a thick print coat of shell-shock, backed by a layer of resin only mixed with aerosil( artificial silica), this makes the resin like toothpaste and gets in good in the deep detail, then backed by two layers of fiberglass. All this is done one right after each other to insure a good bond without delamenation. Quote:

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
wow Russ - ok soz I questioned u abt FG lids on an earlier pm; does indeed look solid
my only previous experience with FG was early on in this hobby when I got some cheap (most probably) recast stuff - which basically looked like some sheets with the resin all over em. Thin and very brittle.
Also coming from TK background, so only used to ABS/plastics and wasnt sure abt FG

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I use torn pieces of FG matt, not sheets of FG cloth, The matt takes to the contours much better than cloth. I over lap them as I go, wetting and tamping them in the mold with chip brushes, working out the airbubbles. It's takes patience while working quickly to get good evenness before the resin starts to cure, and don't use too much resin all at once, just enough to get it throughly wet.
As far as you-tube?:rolleyes I give away alot of info on the forums, you should be able to get a good idea how it's done, but I might when I get time.

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I think doing the entire suit would be very cool, but also super expensive. But quite a challenge non the less.

Re: My Briareos(Appleseed) Helmet
I am planning on the suit, already have the left shoulder armor sculpted and ready to mold. I'll concentrate on the armor pieces first, then move on the the chest piece and accesories. May even make his cyborg muscles out of urethane rubber skin. But much money and time will have to be spent. I'll keep you posted. Quote:
