Molds and Castings

Outlaw Assassin

New Hunter
Hey all you out there in Fett land, I'm kinda new to the scratch builds and I was hoping for some info. This is mainly about making molds and castings. What happens to the "master/original" after you take the mold. Is it still a good piece or is it usually damaged removing the mold? Also where are the best places to obtain supplies and also a good place for info on doing this. I know my questions is probably pretty vague but I'm hoping to pull some casts of a helmet. Silicone, fiberglass, resin etc.. not sure which to use and Pros and Cons of them. Thanks..

Like Mark said, whether the master survives the molding process depends on what it's made out of. I get my supplies from jgreer.com.

i've been buying stuff from smoothon.com. the site bradleyfett listed sells the same products at the same prices (which was interesting)

the master doesn't want to have holes/severe undercuts, seams, etc... so sometimes the master ends up looking a little funny.

for instance, when i molded an airsoft pistol, i had to fill in the area around the trigger so that the inside of the gun wouldn't fill up with silicone.

as a result, the airsoft no longer works.

you tube hass lots of mold making videos.
Smooth-on has lots of vidoes on their site.
both are very informative.

If the model is solid, it will survive molding. If the model id made of clay or other "soft" material, kiss it good bye!
