Mannequin help?

Hey all, I was wondering if you guys might have any idea where the best place to look for a mannequin would be? How much should I expect to spend? Thanks for the help!

The DL over at ct.net (Jason "Torment") gave us this great advice:
"Each state and region has a Macy's display sale. Each year Macy's gathers all their display's that are no longer useful for store needs and sells them off to the public. YOu just have to find out where yours is. Luckily I live about 40 mins away from where my state does theirs. I think I payed like 40 bucks for each of mine. I got the display case for about 65. It had a small chipped tile at the base. It was considered damaged??!!?? You will not get something in perfect condition, but who cares, it all gets covered up anyway."
Hope that helps.

I've called five macy's stores in my loction and the 1-800 macy's number and no one I've spoken with has ever heard of a macy's display sale :(

Monday, I'm calling a guy in my area that should know a little more than the customer service representatives that I spoke with earlier. They say that they just throw their mannequins away. If that's the case. they'll have no problem giving them to me for free :D If I can get some, I bet I can mail them to you guys. Non profit. Just pay shipping. (which might run you some, actually)

A lot of people go the PVC mannequin route, but I've seen too many of those costume displays looking really stiff or leaning into a corner like they've imbibed far too many Tequila Sunrises.

It's a shame to pay so much for costume parts only to skimp on the way in which you display them, so I recommend going on Ebay and getting something good. Check the general pose and and dimensions. I have typically reposed limbs afterward and modified the hands to hold weapons, etc.

If you got a little bit of cash to burn, you may want to buy a flexible mannequin. A flexible mannequin, you can arrange the pose to your liking, except kneeling down pose.

I checked with my Macy's dow the street. They told me they pitch their old ones out, so I was put in contact with a Manager. He told me their was a chance, (Not a great one) that I might get my hands on three male mannequins next week, Thursday or Friday. I only need one, and if he comes through, I would be happy to ship the other two out for who ever wants them if you pay shipping. I'll keep you guys posted.

well, looks like this is a bust for free mannequins. The guy a Macys failed me. He said that last month all the last years storage was tossed out. So none for me. I will keep looking!

Bendeble mannequins are great but they cost a lot and it wont work with a Boba Fett costumes, only with very light costumes. I've talked with a manager of a company which is offering them and told him that i would take the mannequin for a Boba Fett costume. He told me that the mannequin would be too instabil and not solid enough for especially the weight of a jetpack. It would work great for a not too heavy costume like Stormi or Tie-Pilot. Pretty dissapointing because it would make a fantastic diplay:cry

Aw... that is very sad indeed.
I guess the other solution will be to get a regular sturdy mannequin and then chop of the arms and replaced them with.... dont know, thick cable and bend them or PVC piping ?

Have you ever tried to put your Boba costume on the mannequin? Would be interesting if it works. Perhaps there is a chance to stabilize the flexible mannequin .

The only thing holding the mannequin up is a piece of rod metal inserted to the right leg. That's it.
At this time I dont have a Fett costume, but what I can do is fill my school back pack with books up to 2 Kg. Should be roughly the same weight of a jett pack and we'll see how it goes.

For this pose: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php/36189-My-Boba-is-almost-done-now!-99

I just bought a mannequin from ebay and cut the head, and the arms to re-position them. I used heavy duty tape to keep it in the pose I wanted it and fiberglassed the arms again. After 30 minutes it was dry and hard as a rock. It´s no problem to put the ee-3 blaster into the hands. The head I did cut off because the mannequin slightly looked to the side and that was lame looking. I re-positioned the head too and viola ... that´s it.

Oh and the fingers: I looked for a mannequin with seperate fingers (many of them have some fingers molded together!) and did cut them off. I used the heavy duty tape too to put them togerther again. I didn´t fiberglas them, because I wanted them to stay flexible.
I now could bend them in form as liked. In my case one hand to hold the blaster´s trigger and one to hold the barrel.

I first thought it would be hard to get this done ... but it is not.

Hope I could help a bit!
