What kind of paint are you using?
What kind of liquid mask is it?
How long are you letting your liquid mask dry before painting over it?

I've never tried practicing on wood or cardboard. That may have something to do with it.

I've had the same problems with my Boba helmet. I think it's because I didn't let the paint dry long enough (24 hrs.) before I started peeling the masking off. I found that it worked better on my gauntlets coz I did let the paint dry for 24 hrs. before peeling the masking off.

    Re: Liquid Mask trouble

You're going to have to let your paint dry much longer. A full 24 hour cure time should do the trick.
If I'm not mistaken, Tamiya is acrylic paint. That's a big no-no when you want to "layer" without peeling off access paint.
You're going to need an enamel or lacquer based paint.
