Letraset Dry Transfer Font - Folio Bold Condensed.

    --------------------------------------------
    Update 10-04-2012
    --------------------------------------------
It seems that this Letraset font was already known by some members to be the one used on the Pre-Pro #3 and ESB Hero helmets, but was never posted on the forums. I did a search on the forums for this font and all the results were negative.
I will resume this thread from a found font to a simple font presentation.
    --------------------------------------------

I had in the past a first attempt to find the Letraset font used for the Pre-Pro #3 and ESB helmets, more specifically on the ears ==> ESB Helmet Decal Templates. Altough this find was close enough, it didn't gived me that whoa-like feeling.

But today I did an in-depth search on the net and after browsing some font types I found this font:

    compacta-font.jpg lettraset008-1.jpg

(Note that the second image is an actual Letraset sheet with Compacta Light font)

At a first look it looks like the big winner, but all the first impressions went away after I did a quick comparison with the ESB ear fonts.

    compacta-esb.jpg

Then when I thought that I have no luck with this, I found this... I will let the images to do the talk:

    folio-font.jpg

    dv-esb.jpg ee-esb.jpg i-esb.jpg t-pp3.jpg

    A perfect fit!

Note that the last image belongs to the Pre-Pro #3 helmet because the T is no longer visible on the ESB Hero helmet.

The height of the font is 7mm or font size 19.92 in US and UK or 18.62 in Europe (or 26.45 pixel or 0.2756 inch). It seems that in the text editors the correct font height is 28pt.

    ----------------------------------
    Update 03-04-2012
    ----------------------------------
Here are some additional informations and a higher resolution image with the Folio font and the ear decals.

This is the site with the font preview and a short description ==> LinoType | Folio Bold Condensed

This image (compiled by me) is a part of a book found on Google Books which prove that this type of font was used as letraset dry transfer:

    letraset-folio-font.jpg

And here is the actual font for download in compressed ZIP format (for PC only?):

    folio-font-types.jpg

    Folio Bold Condensed.zip
    Folio Medium.zip

    And the hi-res image:

    folio-decals.jpg

    ----------------------------------
    Update 03-04-2012
    ----------------------------------
Here are some comparison images of the letters on the Pre-Pro #3 ears:

    pp3-ear-01.jpg pp3-ear-02.jpg pp3-ear-03.jpg

    Perfect fit on this too!

And the images with the Pre-Pro #1/Pre-Pro #3 and ESB jetpack letters from post #22:

    pp1-jetpack-letters.jpg esb-jetpack-letters.jpg

A comparison image between the Pre-Pro #1 and Promo #2 (AoSW/C-IV exibits) jetpacks:

    pp1-vs-promo2-jetpack.jpg

You can draw the dots (•) in any text editor by holding the ALT key and then typing 0149 (in Windows only?):

    pp1-dot.jpg pp3-dot.jpg

The left double arrow («) is drawn by holding the ALT key then typing 0171:

    pp1-left-arrows.jpg

The right double arrow (») is drawn by holding the ALT key then typing 0187:

    pp1-right-arrows.jpg

    ----------------------------------
    Update 07-04-2012
    ----------------------------------
I found an image (on Flickr) with a page from a 1966 Letraset Catalogue which shows all the fonts used for their products:

    letraset-catalogue-1966-page-1.jpg

I have other images from newer catalogues, but these are from late '70 to mid '80.

    letraset-catalogue-1970-1980.jpg letraset-catalogue-3.jpg

    ----------------------------------
    Update 19-05-2012
    ----------------------------------
Just wanted to add two PNG files (A4 and LTR) set to transparency with the Folio Bold Condensed - Letraset replica for those who want to do an accurate job on their helmets and/or jetpacks:

    folio-letraset-sheet-print-a4.png folio-letraset-sheet-print-ltr.png

Remember to use the fit to page option when printing.

    Have fun with these files!

Spot on raf! I was really fortunate on my lid to find rub on letters that matched spot on - they were a generic brand and not actual letraset, and didnt have a font name, but were pretty well perfect - much like the ones you have now found. Great work as always my friend!

I had in my mind to do some comparison of the font with the jetpack decals, but first I need to get the exact measurements of the jetpack. I'm working on it!

It seems that some of the symbols are the same size (except the two big decals on the top of the tanks) used on the helmets, but tomorrow I will do a more in-depth research on this.

There are no "big decals" on the tank tops.
those were drawn on with a Sharpie (or similar felt tip pen)

Nate, I thought yout meant the ESB decal "letters", the "E's and H's".

I agree, not decals on the ROTJ top tank section.

    I meant all Jetpacks.
The ESb does have the E's and H's,

Re: Letraset Dry Transfer Font Found!

In the last couple of days I did some measurements of the jetpack (only images) and I got some really interesting results regarding the fonts and the font height used: the font is the same font used on the Pre-Pro #3 and ESB Hero ears - Folio Bold Condensed (7mm height) but there is also another type used in combination with the first one: Folio Medium (7mm height), but there are some letters with smaller height used on the top left tank (pre-Pro #1), around 4 or 5mm, but most of them are 7mm. It might be possible that my measurements are a bit or too much off, but I have no other resources to confront these values.

This image shows the different Folio Types:

    folio-font-types.jpg

And this is the Folio Medium font for download==> Folio Medium.zip

Here is the Pre-Pro #1/Pre-Pro #3 (same jetpack) and the ESB Hero jetpack measurements, but the Promo #2 jetpack (in the AoSW and C-IV exibits) shows the same results (sadly the ROTJ Hero jetpack has all the letters removed or scratched):

    pp1-jetpack-letters.jpg esb-jetpack-letters.jpg

Note that the letter combinations are my interpretation and might be wrong.

The Promo #2 Jetpack has Folio Medium font applied and not the Folio Bold Condensed, but possible some other font types too (ex. Helvetica):

Updated the end of the first post with keystrokes for the dot on the right ear and the jetpack, and also the keystrokes for the left and right double arrows found on the jetpacks. All image files that used these characters were corrected and uploaded.

Re: Letraset Dry Transfer Font Found!

Today I played a little bit with this image :

    helvetica-letraset-sheet.jpg

This is an A5 sheet (half of an A4 page) of an existing Letraset sheet (Helvetica Medium Condensed 7mm). The whole idea was to recreate a new sheet with the 'Folio Bold Condensed 7mm' font:

    folio-letraset-sheet.jpg

The whole page was recreated by using similar fonts and by replacing the sheet code with TDH and 0302, which means March 2002 (the birth of this forum) and in the end I applied a bit of aging to the page. I might recreat the page without any brand name and other codes if anyone will want to do these for the TDH members (or for anybody).

I also did a test print of this sheet to see if the font height is indeed 7mm:

    folio-measurement.jpg

    Perfect!

I believe you are actually looking for 7.6mm (28pt) from Letraset. There was actually considerable debate at one point whether it was 7.6 or 6.7 (24pt) but from what I recall with our scaling tests on the helmet, 7.6 won out.

And here is Folio Medium at 7.6mm for pack although we were never able to positively ID all the characters.

Keep in mind the TTF's that are currently available vary slightly from the original dry transfers from Letraset.

Here is what we had come up with for the PP1 pack based on the 7.6mm Letraset letters... I can't remember if this was ever finalized or not, but for whatever it is worth, here it is.

And I am almost embarrassed to post these up because we never came close to finishing them, but here is as far as we got with the MoM pack based off Folio Medium.

I'm a bit confused! I know that the correct font size is 28, altough all the converters on the internet shows different values:

I did a test print and the font size 20 was wrong, so a gradualy increased the font size until I got the font size 28, which for me gived exactly 7.0mm and not 7.6mm.

The other thing that I don't understand from Art's post(s) is if this font was a known Letraset font or not, because all my searches were with no result(s).

Re: Letraset Dry Transfer Font - Folio Bold Condensed.

The thread title was changed and the beginning of the first post was updated with new informations:

It seems that this Letraset font was already known by some members to be the one used on the Pre-Pro #3 and the ESB Hero helmets, but was never posted on the forums. I did a search on the forums for this font and all the results were negative.
I will resume this thread from a found font to a simple font presentation.

Keep in mind, as I mentioned earlier that the TTF font is not exact to the dry transfers.

Here is where we are coming up with 28pt being 7.6mm. This is a scan from my 1976 Letraset Catalog which shows samples of all of their dry transfer fonts.

Sorry about that. Not trying to steal your thunder or withhold information. You have done an amazing amount of detective work here and that should not go unnoticed.

Unfortunately, I thought the Letraset thing was well known and published. Tylerdurden (Dan) is the one who positively IDed the fonts about 8 years ago. I know their was debate about the size, but I didn't realize people weren't aware of what fonts were used. This is why we should be populating the wiki! Actually... if you look in the wiki, we do have an entry for Letraset Dry transfers, but we never filled it out.

You are right on the difference between the Letraset and TTF font and the difference is under 1mm (more exactly 0.6mm) which is a huge deal in a small scale.

The use of the Letraset lettering was a public knowledge, but not the specific font used. The fact that this particular font was never posted(?) on the forums made me to search for it. But now this is all public and the hunt begin for the accurate Letraset sheet.
