LATER friends On the TDH

Well Im gonna take off from here.I have been around for along time and although I dont have tons of posts feel I have helped alot of people here and made some good friends.

But I am leaving. I can no longer take the elitist attitude of some or the sickening little cliques and selective selling that goes on here.As well as the treatment of newbies... where someone will spend 10 minutes writing a snotty reply about how to use the search function when a new member asks a simple question.
I also dont like the fact some people here feel to make it a point to make fools of others who arent as knowledgable about this as they think they are.

Without new people this hobby will die so remember that the next time you feel the need to berrate some newbie.

I'm sorry to hear you feel that way, Jason, and I share some of your frustrations. Your contributions have been valuable. I have great costume parts made by you. You were nice enough to do business with me when I was new here.

Leaving the forum won't help solve the issues you describe, though. At least PM the admins with the details of your frustrations, so they can be addressed where possible.

The "frustrated veterans berate newbies about the search function" thing is a symptom of every vBulletin forum I go to. Useful information gets buried under a million posts. There's a solution somewhere for that. It's easy and tempting (but wrong) to "dogpile on the noob" for not knowing where 50 different forum posts are. That's a user behavior motivated by a bigger site layout problem.

Anyway, I'm sure the admins are motivated to keep this place friendly and informative for everybody, and user feedback is an essential resource to help them do that. Don't just leave!

Say it's not so, Jason. I see your frustration though. All too often I use the search function only to find that the info I'm looking for goes back to the beginnings of TDH and that all the links and pics no longer work when I get there. Count Dookie is right. "Use the search function, Noob" is an all too familiar reply no matter where you go. I hope you reconsider and stay. I've only been here for a little over a year and it's people like yourself who make this the best Fett site on the net. Please don't stay away too long.

As a noob I feel quite well looked after. it would maybe be helpfull to have a bit of a start up area with faq, or a link which is in effect a search for noobs who are struggling with performing a search, Like "click here" for ESB v ROTJ differences, which I have asked and I have seen a few other people ask in my short time here, it must be a little frustrating to be asked that for the millionth time.

It's sad to see you go, but I fully understand why you are leaving. Member attitudes have also driven others away from the board, some who have been here as long or as little as you. Good luck to you in the future, I hope you stay in the costuming and that this board didn't spoil it for you from that.

It's a shame we have to lose a member in order for a few words to be said. Rather than the issue be pointed out without a lashing.

I have felt the same way, but I stick around because of all the good folks I do know.
I check around here often, but I'm hoping it will get back to being as inviting to new ones as it was when I first joined.

Maybe there should be a sticky with links to old threads that answer frequently asked questions for each topic for newbies.
If not a simple link or direct answer could suffice rather than some disrespectful responses.

Dude don't leave. It isn't just because I need your services. It is because when level headed individuals leave that is just one less voice of reason. The community at large will lose out big time if you decide to part ways. I hope you will reconsider this. I haven't been around as long as some, but I have been lurking for years before I could afford to start up my JF and BF. I just read the posts that I care to and avoid the flames. This is a good forum for the most part, so I really hope you reconsider. If not then I wish you well, and I will just have to regret not having one of your flightsuits, pouches, vest, etc. etc. etc.

Those are all good points, and I'd rather not see Jason leave either. That is his choice however, not ours. Him leaving may give the community (word used very loosely) another reason to look at itself and pick out its flaws that were brought up and act upon them. However I believe that their noses will turn up into the air like this was never brought up.

I had only wished I knew how you felt before today, I've had plenty of discussions with plenty other members about the exact same problem you have with the forum. This topic needs to be brought up and discussed more often than when someone decides they've had enough. Just remember that you are hurting the forum with your absence. If you think the forum has a poor attitude, then a great person like you doesn't need to work with it.

sorry to hear of ur dissapointment and disgust. its very understandable but sad to hear.
although i have not had the pleasure to get to know u personally, being a "noob" if u will i have stumbled across tons of helpful and informative info that u have provided that has made it possible to get further in my fett.

your sculpting and artistic skills are very inspiring to say the least. hope you will re-consider and come back one day, and if you choose not to i understand and goodluck w/ ur new path....your talents will be missed.....

but mabye sometimes when we think we are trying to be helpful in saying that or giving our opinion about a topic that someone may indeed take it as were comming off wrong....sometimes its hard to distinguish someones words no matter how many emoticons we use... and someone may actually take our helpful advice as an insult or in a demeaning way.......i guess as the old saying goes " sometimes its best to say nothing at all" falls into play....

Wow, that's was a lot of reading for sure. There is a unity here of proactive and passionate folks. As we all are for this awesome hobby. This a great opportunity for the membership to reflect and step back to see what we all could do together to improve upon an all ready solid, friendly community of artists at large. I agree that sometimes we all get off track abit, as alot of us are working adults, with overhead, children to raise, Christmas breathing down all our necks. Though, keep the debate goin', that's the only way we will find some good solutions.

This is a truely sad day. Jason, I hope you reconsider and stay, or I hope the changes can occur to bring you back. You are easily one of the best vendors on this board. Your communication, turn around time, and of course the product is top notch. Not to mention the fact that you are fantastic to deal with. I own many of your product, and have been extremely happy with all of it. Your post count has absolutely no reflection on the help you have provided this board, in my opinion. Ive been a member here for two and a half years and in the early days of my membership I felt very welcome here. More recently though I too have become dispondant at the elitist and clique attitudes that is becoming more prevelant. Treatment of newcomers has sometimes been less than hospitable and the current trend of ignoring PMs is something that has infuriated me. I guess a low postcoutn makes you a second class citizen around here.

What a shame. While I agree with most of what you said SkyGunBro. At the same time a community is made better by folks living up to what you are claiming you want to see rather then leaving because one or two folks spoil the party. There will be highs and lows no matter where you go and I have never seen anything any different on any other board to lead me to believe otherwise. Its sad but just a fact of life that dosnt seam to ever go away.

Whether your on TDH, the RPF, Bikerscout.net, the 501st forums, The another board or any other board for that matter you will get spoil sports, people jumping onto newbies, clicks, elitist selling... ect ect. I believe its standing up for what you believe in and acting how you would like to see others to act that will make where ever you log on to a better place.

Pretty much what Justin said... clearly you haven't been around on the net much because many of the problems we have here are prevalent in every online community. I recently joined a forum, totally unrelated to props and almost had to laugh as I can virtually place names of members from our forum on members from this new forum based on their attitudes and demeanor!

The things with the cliques and elitism lately really has gotten out of control. It is absolutely pathetic to see how some people choose to behave and that some people have such little self esteem and worth that they have to play "god" in an arena like this to make themselves feel like they have some value. The worst part is that it is generally (here and everywhere else I have gone) the most talented among us who feel the need to act the most childishly. However, as long as people condone/overlook those actions, worship those people and give them power, they will continue to misuse it. That is just the way it is. I think it is unrealistic to expect the administration to do something about it. They can't force a certain individual to sell a particular item to a particular person. They can't force people to like one another or be gracious. They can't force people to realize the board and people they continually poop all over is the same board and people who have given them their "celebrity" status in this tiny sliver of society. It is very sad but I have seen it again and again here and in many other places.

In regard to the newbies... there is no reason to be rude to them, but the fact of the matter is that it is pretty arrogant and self-important to come here to TDH and expect to be hand fed the information that is already readily available on this board. If you are too lazy to simply do a search, why should I take MY time to type it all out for you? Again, there is no justification for old members being rude about it, but it isn't out of line to tell a newb to use the search function. It is an inappropriate sense of entitlement to think that and old timer should spoon feed you the things you can easily find for yourself.

On a final note, I really think it is silly for you to leave in a huff because everyone won't play the way you deem they should. If I did that, I could pretty much just shut my internet connection off and never go online again. There will always be those who choose to be rude, unscrupulous, liars, pot-stirrers, and trouble makers. Some are clever enough to stay just below the radar and so they will be here. Just ignore them and enjoy the good things, the positive contributions, the people who are truly trying to help one another. There are still plenty of those people here and this is still a great community. As much as we wish some would just fade away, they won't and even if they do, there will be others who will step in to take their place, but by letting them drive you from a place you love, you only give them more power.

This isn't really my fight or anything, but I felt the need to point this out: if a newbie asks a question, and you reply with a snarky remark, aren't you taking time to reply anyway? Why not use that time to type out something constructive or helpful?

I certainly understand where you are coming from and agree. There is no need for "snarky" responses to newbies but I also believe in the saying - give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. I believe this saying is absolutely perfect for this situation. Teach a new member how to look things up for themselves and they will be able to for the duration of their time here. Of course teaching them to do this should be done with kindness and in the spirit of helping them out.

Im not leaving because the board doesnt work the way I think it should Im leaving for several reasons.The biggest one is the elitist attititude held by alot of the senior members.And yes I agree no matter what board you go to there are always guys like that there.
And I admit I can be thinned skinned at times and tend to get amped up over things that may seem trivial to others.

The other reason is the deception the certain few priveldged ones that say "poof" look what I made and never have to show WIP pics but are the first to ask others "where are the WIP pics." and basically insinuated you copied it.
These guys are protected because they make cool stuff and if slapped on the hand for their actions they retaliate by not selling their wares to the people that reprimanded them.So what happens...they get away with anything and everything.
Some of these people have attained a GOD complex and all their little minions that follow them around and treat them as such just compound the complex.

I also think that blackballing people all the time from certain for sale items is wrong and should not be allowed.Unless you know its a recaster then all items should be offered to anyone who wants them and not because you know the right people or greased the right palms.

If your doing a limited run and the allotment has been bought up then fine but open ended runs should be offered to anyone who wants them.

Another thing there are some people on here who never help out and only come on here to hock their wares...

And the MR helmet thread isnt what set me off it just added to it.My point was that the MR helmet is the most accurate bar none readily available helmet as compared to the rubies,Don post DP deluxe....Am I wrong???

Everything is 2nd best short of having the actual screen used helmet - period.

But lets talk about these plugs and such,
who can say what damage and scratches and wonkiness was caused by poor casting or bad handling? Who is to say that these coveted and quickly recasted "official" copies of one of the alledeged line up of Fett helmets was given kid glove care when molded? Perhaps this had a big impact on the overall pulled piece, I don't know....

It appears they were quickly molded/recasted because it was a no-no.
What about the handling of the costumes pieces over the years. I've seen pics of the ankle spats displayed over the wrists!
Who can say whats completely accurate based on photos from when the costumes were haphazzardly thrown onto old shelving (as seen in the cd pics) and such have caused ?

At any rate, the MR for me is a helmet I can get that was digitally scanned from an official helmet which I think looks really good and with some minor touch ups can be made very screen accurate.

The best part is I (and anyone)can get one without having to confim my alliances/friendships here or having to deal with someone doing a half-cocked background check on me just to get something fan made around here,
by begging for one or having to "kiss up" constantly and hope...or having to deal with secret web sites inside this web site, broken promises, certain people getting stuff then throwing it up in everyones faces who did not, pics that were supposed to be posted "for the community" but were not, ect, ect, ect, blah, blah blah,

You know - Jason had the right idea and I shame myself for not following his lead earlier - good by all......

I prefer to leave here with my dignity not having to begg someone for something...

Cool kids on a costuming forum hunh, that's like saying I'm the smartest kid in a class full of children with down syndrome. I know what SGB is saying and it's been going on for years, however TDH is for the most part a wonderful resource for this hobbie. As with anything in life, you just gotta look past the BS. I have seen this exact phrase thrown around more than I care to think about but the fact is, it is simply a generalization. What does that mean? What SPECIFICALLY is it that senior members are doing that if so offensive? Can't argue this one at all. I don't think this is a result of inaction on the administrations part... simply that some people have ego's that constantly need stroking and as long as they are providing product there will always be people lining up to stroke them. There is a lot going on here but also a lot of deplorable insinuations on your part. Do you have any proof that any palms have been "greased?" Basically you are making accusations that certain individuals have somehow paid to be in the in-crowd so they can get items. Are you just making defamatory generalizations or do you have proof? Comments like these are boarding on libel and are pretty low. Trying to make your point by making wild accusations is a very dangerous thing.

In regard to your belief that a seller should sell to anyone who wants an item, that could be argued either way. In a perfect world it would be nice. However, there is no law that you MUST sell to everyone and wouldn't you be unhappy if the administration tried to force you to sell an item to someone you didn't want to. What is completely pathetic and contemptible are those who more or less hang their products over a potential buyers head in an effort to mainpulate them or won't sell to them because they won't lick the boots of the seller and slander the seller's enemies. And yes... that goes on here, but I would again ask you, what is your realistic expecation of the administration in these instances? Should they force a seller to sell to certain individuals? Should they ban those who won't? Do you really want a board that attempts to exhert that type of tyranny over its members?

I have never claimed to be a Fett Expert, nor have I pooped on you or made you out to be a tool. Your statement in the MR helmet thread was simply wrong. I corrected you but apparently YOU are too high and mighty to be capable of being wrong. If you really wanted to learn, you would have seen my post as a helpful correction instead of seeing it as some type of attack.

So in other words, until the world is made a perfect place by someone else, I am going to go hide in a corner and bury my head or go find another sandbox to play in. there's a lot of negative sort of stuff circling around the prop hobby surrounding elitism, favoritism, cliques, etc... always has been, always will be.

it usually revolves around peoples' willingness to share what they have or what they know.

there are those that do some really great thing and can't wait to share it with the world.

there are others that share with a limited set of friends and that's it.

any situation where people are regularly exposed to things that they can't have will generate some degree of negativity somewhere.

for whatever reason, there just seems to be a lot of it going around now. RPF, TDH, MEPD, etc... all seem to have something going on that comes back to the sharing thing.

it annoys me quite a bit, but it is what it is, and i just shrug it off and move on. i'm not going to let a few bleepin' bleeps get in the way of my fun

You are right Pennywise and while I used the term "cool kids" more as a term of description/example, its because I dont like the term "elitist". This community has been the best one of all the one's I frequent and while it is a public forum, it also means that people aren't perfect. I think Jason and Mike will be cool after this blows over because realistically this "problem" is not exclusive to TDH it is just the prop community in general and sometimes you can't do anything about how people treat one another.(IMHO)

I can see why you are leaving....and I left for a while because of similar events, and things haven't really changed.

I have gotten in a few tussles on this forum, quite a few times.. Some were completely my fault...and others I was retaliating, and it just got shot into my face. I am actually surprised I was not banned, at least temporarily.

I came here, and I got some of the n00b treatment, but not much. Eventually, I got a "Know-it-all" attitude as well. Looking back at the arguments, I just read and say: "Wow"

Some other things on this forum bug the cr*p out of me...but that is the way it is run, and what the majority believe...oh well.

The fact is, there are many here who are protected by their high post count, and the fact they have been here for a while...while this is saddening, there is not much one can do about it.

And to the post of some who believe that other forums are like this, fact is...that's not entirely true, not one bit.

I am on a few other forums, and a current one I am on...I never see a conflict, as on TDH, you can expect one almost every other day.

Sorry to see you go! But I can completely understand your reasons.

I feel that I have done my fair share of contributing to this board and helping out new members, but I find myself feeling like an outsider.

I can’t even get some folks to reply to my PM’s and e-mails when I want to get in on a run. I have even gotten hate mail accusing my work (templates & patterns) of infringing on their prop business. I just don’t understand the attitudes of some folks.

Let me get a couple things cleared up:

I never dumped on the admin here...just was wondering why certain behavior goes unchecked....I understand in the end people are responsible for their own behavior and there isnt much that can be done.

As for libel comments I have had my name an rep. dragged through the mud here a couple times when I was accused of recasting or possible attempting to recast... this went un checked.....


I can admit when Im wrong I do all the time and Im wrong all the time. But I responded to a "WHATS YOUR OPINION" thread and you came in and so graciously corrected me as you put it....Fine.. but admit it or not it was done in a very snide and condescending way.....

Being in the position you are and having the status you have I was surprised to see the comment from you.I figured you would lead by example....and act and treat others in a way you would expect the rest of the board members to act.

Read above alot of others feel the same as me so its not just my imagination I just happen to be stupid enough to say it outloud.

This thread wasnt started to make a dramatic exit or have a soap opera ending it was started for the sole purpose of saying goodbye to my friends I have made on here and to explain a little why I was going... I have made alot of friends and for me to PM them individually would take awhile.
Think what you want I know why I did it and thats all that matters.

I hate to see battles going on in any forums but unfortunately they do. I feel TDH is one of the places where they happen far less frequently than on other boards... if you think this place is bad... go play on the RPF for a few weeks.

Jason, I'm sorry to see you leaving... I'm sad to see anyone leave this great community. Especially someone with talents to offer the membership such as you have. You've been a great help to many people (including myself... I wear one of your flightsuits) and feel that you leaving is a shame. I hope you reconsider.

Braks, I think even you might want to look at some of the comments you made and think about how others may view them. You might be surprised to see that some do come off as elitist. Sorry bud.

Everyone... take five and chill. This community has a lot to offer everyone and I feel if everyone just took a step back and a deep breath they might see that it will be alright again.

No worries. If I am wrong or came across in a wrong light, then you, and the board have my apology. My intension is never to come across as an elitest. I am no better than anyone here and while I would like to think my contributions have been helpful, they are no more important than the contributions of anyone else. I simply weary of the seemingly growing trend to bash the old guard and to have an entitlement mentality when it comes to certain pieces or certain runs. I also grow very tired of hearing the administration bashed because they didn't handle issue x exactly as a particular member believes it should be handled and therefore the administration is clearly corrupt and showing favoritism. I get tired of the negativity and the desire to dogpile at every turn. I get tired of those with agendas and tired of those who imagine everyone has an agenda.

I have been here as long as anyone. I love this board. I love the community. I honestly believe this to be the best run board in the prop community with the best members. I simply hate seeing it tear itself apart.

While I stand by my statements, if I came across overly harsh in the way I said them, you have my sincere apology.

it's true. sad but true. you wouldn't think a bunch of people making props could be so angry sometimes

If you think threads about recasting or shoddy work here can get ugly, you should see some of the posts on replica prop forum.

My two-cent, random thoughts... Take 'em for what they are. Just observations by a guy trying to make a Fett costume (very slowly), and a fan of many forums... (I'm writing this as first person, but it's just because it's easier.)
(and it is aimed at NO one! Purely commentary)

1) I do hate to see old school people use the, "Use the search function, newb" line. I used to get it quite often when starting out here, and other places. Please don't insult my intelligence. I DID try the search. Because of my newness, maybe I didn't know the right term, and came up empty. If you feel compelled to reply, make it something like "try searching for X". Or like someone pointed out, if you take the time to reply with a jab, maybe reply with a link instead. That way you're not "wasting" your time writing out a reply that already exists..

2) There are COUNTLESS, incredibly talented people here. With talent comes some ego (usually). Heads are going to to butt. Chill out. No offense to anyone, but I think the most impressive work done here is by the scratch builders. I like what their hand crafted stuff represents. Don't let your abilities make you jerk. Have some humility.

3) All the arguments about who knows what the exact specs and measurements are very tiresome. At the end of the day, we're building costumes, not building artificial hearts. It's not that important at the end of the day. Do you HAVE to correct people every time with your absolutely accurate information? When people like Jeremy Bulloch (sp?) say they aren't sure about some things, how can you be so sure?

3a) I remember one battle about accuracy degrading into threats of physical violence. Are you kidding me? You want to get into a fist fight over costume building? Give me a break. Getting worked up to the point of violence over something we all supposedly enjoy. That's just dumb.

4) People getting pressured to not detail their work because others feel they won't be as special anymore is just crazy. One of the first threads I read, and was inspired by, was a beautifully detailed tutorial of a beautifully painted helmet. I was going through catching up, getting more and more excited by every addition, then BAM. It stopped because the author was asked by other painters to not give up "trade" secrets. Their profits were more important than this person just showing off something they were proud of, and wanted to share. Yep. That's the community spirit.

5) And truth be told, I hate threads like this. Yes there are always going to be things you disagree with, and others are going to disagree with you. Unless you have totally lost interest in all this, then why leave? Why cheat yourself out of something you enjoy? Be the bigger person, and don't let "them" beat you down. Everyone has some supporters, admireres, etc. Find comfort in your, and ignore the static.

my old SGB suit doesn't fit me anymore, i was hoping to get a new one,. in fact i've been at it for months trying to get something arranged. now this....

after two years i was bound to grow out of it, but i thought jason would definitely be around long enough to come through for me again.

J/K. I lurk mostly these days. I remember being the noob and wanting to fit in. My self esteem wasn't based on fitting in, but I just wanted to be part of something cool and sometimes I did feel like part of the gang. TDH is still awesome, though, no doubts there. There's nothing like it. At the end of the day, like mentioned above, it's just a costume. I stopped trying to perfect my Jango and just enjoyed wearing it. Back to lurking.
