Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
The Navy base here in Lemoore, CA just showed the Clone Wars movie. It took about 20 minutes to finally "get used" to the new look.......once you are passed that, the movie was actually pretty entertaining. Lots of action and lots of emphasis on the characters' personalities (including Clones).
The movie was pretty much full of battles from start to finish and the kids will love a lot of the cute stuff (baby Hutt, mischievious jawas, stupid droid humor, and of course R2D2 antics).
I do feel the lightsaber battles could have been much better considering it was limitless to what could be portrayed on screen.
Anyway, you can judge for yourself in a couple of days.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I got to see it last night at a charity for Ronald McDonald House that our local garrison was invited to troop. It was a great. I'm already looking forward to seeing it again.

Personally, I'm happy to see R2-KT's appearance, it may be just me, but man I was so happy to see that.

And I was happy to hear about it. A friend of mine saw the screening over the weekend and told me it was in there. If you know thw story behind R2KT, then you know how touching it is. I hope to see the movie next week.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I missed it.....but what part did R2KT show up?
I remember when Katie passed, but I never did hear about the droid until just now. I'll definitely watch for her the next time I see Clone War.

I too loved the inclusion to R2-KT into the script... it touched my heart in a big way...
I saw it on Sunday morning, and will again on Wed night, before the week of trooping the cinemas happen from Thurs night onwards.. :P

Don't want to say anything about the movie. I don't want to spoil it for anyone.:)

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
This has probably been asked somewhere else but why didn't they get Tem to do the voices of the clones in The Clone Wars?
When reading Karen Traviss novels, my mind is reading the clones with a New Zealand accent, obviously.
The clones (in The Clone Wars) sound like ( no offense intended) someone trying to do an Australian accent.. badly.
Please don't get me wrong, I am going to see it this weekend with my partner and we are both very exited but I was just curious about Tem's lack of involvement.

:lol Funny thing about that. My 6-year-old wanted me to read "The Mandalorian Armor" (not Karen Traviss) to him, and I find myself doing the accent when I read Boba's lines. And he also runs around with his new Clone Trooper helmet doing the accent himself. It's so cute.:D
Going to see it at the first showing on Friday.

Just got back from watching it. I thought it was pretty good, loved the battle scenes, the way you felt like you were in the middle of it. Didn't stay past the credits, what did I miss:doh

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Just got home from seeing it. I had only one complaint.... the guy sleeping behind me was snoring reeeaaally loud. It was a fun movie. As cartoony it was I loved the textures of everything. the armor all looked amazing. And the eyes. especially the hutt's eyes

Nothing important. It was just a Jawa trio holding onto the LucasFilm logo, they drop it and run away.

MY REVIEW.....
the good... very nice battles and all the spaceships looked so good they looked like the live action movies!!!...:drool:drool Assajj Ventress rocked!!!!... :cheering:cheeringand its STAR WARS!!!!:cheers
the bad... the opening crawl... where was it???:?:suprise:wacko that was such a let down!!! it wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't see the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away... "screen. Then they tried to do some type of Starship Troopers opening and I was saying NOOOO!!!:cry:cry:cry what are you doing to MY movie!!! :(>: that took about 20 minutes to get over... next... Zero the hutt?? I have a few gay friends so I'm not even close to being homophobic but why did they make a Hutt gangster so wildly and openly gay??? that just doesn't fit in the Star wars universe. and lastly a lot of the music did not fit star wars at all...I thought the phantom menace soundtrack was out of place.. they did a cheap muzak version of the opening theme alot of weird stuff in the middle and at the end, a weird muzak ending theme... very odd ... well the verdict.....
GRADE C+++ :doh:rolleyes
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Did anyone else feel that Zero's voice was the same as Philip Seymour Hoffman voice in Capote? :?
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I read somewhere that it was GL's idea to do that. Originally, from what I read, Ziro was supposed to have a gruff Huttese voice, but GL changed it on purpose. Why? Beats the *@#$ out of me.
David.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I agree about the Hutt's voice, it's like the sought out the most unfitting and annoying voice they could find, and went with that one.:doh
The movie as a whole was pretty good. I can't say I was blown away, but I enjoyed it. I think what it comes down to, is that I'm getting sick of everything "clone wars" all the time. Everything is set in the time between episodes 2 and 3. I'd love to see them animate "Shadows of the Empire" between 5 & 6.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Iam sure they will get to that too, I mean where does the live tv show take place?
I for one love the clonewars cause ever sence old ben first said he was in the clone wars I have alwase wondered WTH is he talking about.
That and the CN CW and the new movie ani dosent act like a ***** like the live movies ani. I think its cause of hayden.

It was done this way by the production crew, done WITH an australian guy (i do forget his name, but they made about 17 references to him being an aussie) to add that little bit of difference to the series....
In all sense they wanted Clone Wars to have a Star Wars look and feel in one hand, and be completely different in the other... Such as is was they also really loved the Australian accent and thought that it would be cool to have the clones with one... Albeit that Tem did want to do the voiceovers from initial reports, but who knows what happened there...
Personally after watching it 2 times, i still love it and will definately see it again tomorrow i think :P
I do agree with the Starship Troopers intro lol :P Although it did have a WWII American Radio Broadcast Service feel to it second time round... :P

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I don't understand the complaints about Zero. Does everyone want every single Hutt to look and sound the same? Booooooring....
Maybe an openly gay, purple tattooed Basic speaking Hutt wouldn't work on Tatooine, but this was Coruscant.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Hutts are hermaphrodites aren't they so Zero/Ziro wouldn't be "gay" right?

Your right about Coruscant, it had some pretty screwed up people in the outlanders club.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Ok I am getting confused. According to the people here the movie is good and enjoyable while all the reviews I have seen elsewhere claim the movie is absolutly terrible. What is going on here?
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
It's a difference between people evaluating the movie for what it is and completely clueless critics thinking its somehow a "7th Star Wars film," which it is not. It's the intro to a new TV series.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
That's it exactly...it's a really long TV show packaged as a movie.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Personally I didnt like it. But thats just my opinion, I know there are alot of people that would disagree and I respect that.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I personally was let down quite a bit. It was fun seeing more star wars but in the end the movie was about a C. The things I liked about the movie were the scenes with the clone troopers (loved Rex's character), the battles, Obi-wans voice actor (major props on sounding like Ewan), Anakin's voice actor (so glad he sounded better than he did in the cartoon).
Asajj was fun, it was good to see her again but I would have liked to see more of her. And I did like the CG they used, it was different but I didnt mind it at all.
I think the movie would have been significantly better if there was no dialog in all honesty. I cringed inside every time Ashoka said "skyguy" or Anakin said "snips" and of course let's not forget "artooey." I understand this is a kids movie but it could have been downplayed a little bit.
Also the battle droids annoyed me. They kind of always have. Machines programmed for war would in reality not even speak to one another let alone crack jokes and act like idiots.
And as people have mentioned I was majorly let down by the absence of the crawl and classic music. I didnt mind the new music, it was neat but a lot it felt like they watched BSG and were like " hey this style of music is pretty neat lets put it in star wars." I guess a little more of the classic stuff and it would have been awesome IMO.
I'm still holding out hope for the rest of the series on TV. I guess I just wasnt feeling it this time. :doh I Hope this the start of a trend for Star Wars.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Just got back from the theater. I don't think is was an abomination like the critics were leading me to believe, and quite frankly I wish I didnt read the reviews before I saw it cause I spent most of the movie looking for why the critics hated it.
Personally I think the dialog was better that this in some of the prequels and the use of nick names did seem to create a connection between Anakin and his apprentice (who is basically the exact opposite of the apprentice he'll have in the Force Unleashed). My problem with the voices was this it seemed I could tell they were talking into a microphone, but I think the sound was a bit off in the theater I saw it in.
The only item I have against the film was the score. The familar mood setting music and melodies were gone, and while the score was ok, I really missed hearing the familiar sounds I fell in love with.
Oh, and whose bright idea was it to have a WWII news style naration at the begining instead of a crawl? Seriously?
Besides that, I still think the TV show will be pretty good from what I've seen so far and got motivated to incorperate star wars into halloween still. I would recommend fellow geeks to go see it, but if you know people who won't watch episode 1 again you'll want to keep them out of the theater.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I took the family out today for the first show at 10:45 am and we all loved it! It was very entertaining and I can't wait to see the TV series!:thumbsup:D
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Just got back. Better than I expected given many reviews, but I could have done without 1) more whacky droid antics that leaves them appearing to be no threat at all 2) stinky 3) Ziro's voice 4) the enitre idea of Anakain having a padawan (ruins, in my opinion, a lot of the angst we see in Ep III) 5) the disproportionate size of the padawan's eyes and head.
On the other hand, I loved 1) a lot of the clone fighting 2) Anakin 3) an actual sense of danger!
Not too bad. Certainly not great but much better than anticipated.

I totally agree 100%, the first time I heard Zero the Hutt speak I was just shaking my head, he sounded like something out of a Disney movie, like Jungle Book. The battle sequences were incredible!!!

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I liked it but couldn't take Ziro seriously. As for why he spoke like this, the troop I trooped with and I discucseed this and though that Hutts change sex much like frogs. So Ziro was probably in his (i mean her) female cycle and Jabba is only seen in his male cycle. I think a comic says something about the sex changes not sure whihc one(shrugs shoulders). Also "Skyguy" and "Snips" and of course "Artooey" hurt every time they said it. It was a kids movie but I liked it and am still excited about the TV series...any word on when that's coming out?? Cheers!

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
The wife and I got to see this, this afternoon. Not too bad. I thought the animation looked kind of forced. Not very fluid when they're doing slow movements, like walking, but the action sequences flowed better. You'd think that with the tech that they have for this type of animation, the movement would have been much more fluid and not as stiff. I liked the fact the Jet Troopers looked like the ones from the Battlefront game, with the same type of jet pack Jango used in the Geonosis arena. The nose art on the Gunships was a very nice touch. I found out that the translation of the guship with the blue Twi'lek in trooper armor on the front, means "Lucky Lekku." Nice touch. I never did see the gunship with the Kowokian Monkey on the side, that's on all the toys now. I must have missed that one.
The cameo of R2-KT was really neat. I thought that was very considerate to put that in there.
They finally showed some Commando Scouts (not to be confused with the Clone Commandos). Very nice. I believe these are the intelligence units that were trained by the Null ARC's, yes?
The music was a little different, however, I kind of liked the "desert" type theme music, after they took control of the monastery. Kind of had that "Blackhawk Down" feeling to it. Like you know they're about to get jacked up.
It wasn't how Ziro the Hutt sounded kind of efeminite that seemed weird to me. It was the fact he was talking in Basic. That was just weird.
Ventress was really cool. Too bad they didn't have Durge in there. Although, since when did Ventress have tattoos on the sides of her mouth?
And by far, my favorite line in the whole movie:
REX: "Surrender, when we outnumber you?"
Droid: "Outnumber? Wait a minute....1...2...3...4...5.....KA-BOOM!!!!!!!
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I saw it today, it was pretty good. Some really cool battle scenes. I don't have a costume, so I wore my Chewbacca shirt.
I found it kinda weird that Padme was voiced by Catherine Taber cuz everytime she was speaking I was thinking of Mission Vao.

Well, CW made over $15 mil this opening weekend. I figured it wouldn't do to good, but I asumed it would overtake TDK in the box office considering it is after all SW, and TDK has been running for 5 weeks. Guess not.

I wasn't really planning to see this but Art had suggested it so we went. I didn't expect much but left enjoying it considerably more than most of the prequels. I ditto all of the things he disliked but was able to overlook them and enjoy the movie. I did miss hearing the 20th century fox music and seeing the opening scroll however. The opening was a bit like Starship Troopers..."Would you like to know more?"

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Hutts, as far as I can remember, I think it was in the han solo trilogy, arent just hemaphrodites, they actually change gender throughout their life.
Jabba was turning from man to woman or vice versa in those books, and had a baby.
I dont know if that got taken as part of the swu or not, but I distinctly remember it happening:)
Those books were actually decent reads, at the time anyway.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
To a kids view, Ziro just talked funny. They have no idea hutts are hermaphrodites or at least I hope they dont. I just took him as being, well you know.

I think the problem was that the movie has been getting really bad reviews (except for here of course), and on rottentomaotes.com only has a 19% fresh level which is lower than the ratings for the Ewok Adventure and, I kid you not, The Holiday Special!
So between the reviews and the fact it was animated, I'm surprized it did make double digits (at least it did better than the X-files movie).
I imagine the DVD sales will do pretty good though, like Serenity and Firefly

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I apologize to anyone that liked this movie.
Simply because I hated it so much.
A new analogy was bestowed on me the other night by a friend of mine;
She says to me, "You're like a girl that keeps waiting for her boyfriend to come around. Someday he'll be nice to me. I'll just give him another chance."
She's right and I'm an idiot.
I'm so ashamed.
-
Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
The thing I hated the most is having to lie to my kid, when she asked me if I liked it. Bottom line is this is not "EVERYONES" Star Wars anymore. I read a quote from Lucas where he said "there is a specific targeted audience for this and that's what we went for." Well, that about sums it up.
As this is a tee off to the series that will run on CN, hopefully they'll show it in parts there too so you can save your $20. The entire time I was watching it I kept thinking why am I watching this in the theater.
I won't bore you with my comments about the film because most reviews spotlight exactly the same things that are wrong, although I did like the design. There was a potential here but it was dropped in order to cater to what GL thinks kids will like and sure enough, my kid liked all that. The main plot of rescuing Jabba's kid is just stupid.
The Clone Wars series from Genndy Tartakovsky blows this away and was the direction they should have gone. This is no different than all the crummy kids stuff currently running on Nick or Disney, or the watered down Batman and Spiderman on Saturday morning, just in the guise of SW.
With the changes to the OT and the disappointment of the prequels my addiction to SW after 30yrs is starting break, especially seeing the direction it's going with this, I have zero hope for the TV show. My youngest can take the reins until she grows out of it at 12.
On a plus side, we snuck into TDK on the way out just in time to watch the big chase sequence. Those 10mins helped to ease the pain a bit.

As for the rest of the film...well it was cheesy in bits and I did cringe a little at the Skyguy/snips nonsense but all in all I found it to be exactly what it was supposed to be a fun and indeed funny, kids film with cool animation! i enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the series (I even think that animated Anakin is a better actor than Hayden :b )
And lastly but most importantly...SO. MANY. CLONES.

No, I would not like to know more. In fact I wish I could forget every second of that movie and pretend it never happened. Worst chapter in the Star Wars history by far.
I think George Lucas forgot that kids love the old Star Wars and so do adults and that you don't need to make something that caters to kids and alienate and anger half of your audience. Show us some clones fighting with a decent story and some lightsaber battles and we will be happy.

Maybe if you ask really nicely he will send you a check. He never smiles in any of the pictures he takes, makes me wonder how nice he is. Anyone here met George, I'd love to know how he is.

I think some people have to keep in mind that this is a Cartoon Network show and was before they decided to put it on the silver screen. I mean compared to the other foddo on that channel such as Chowder, Ben Ten, and The Misadventures of Flapjack, Clone Wars actually has some entertainment value.
Additionally compared to other Movies that became cartoon shows (Bill and Ted's excelent adventures, Ghostbusters, Evolution, Men in Black, the list goes on) Clone Wars lookes like it did pretty well at not becoming overy goofy.
Clone Wars is definatly for the kids, no way around that. But keep in mind before we start blaming George for killing our childhoods, which it seems like we do everytime a new movie comes out, that we get The Force Unleashed this september and a live action show set between episodes 3 and 4 later on.

Yeah, but so were the original Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars cartoons that were so excellent, they even won a couple of Emmy's. There's no reason to change the tone of this series to appeal to kids. Kids embrace SW no matter what. All this does is turn me off to any future SW endeavors that GL is directly involved in. When you have great cartoon series like Justice League/Unlimited or Batman The Animated Series or the direct to DVD DC Comic series, SW should have taken a page from Bruce Timm's success. I was really hoping they'd actually want to break some new ground with an animated series, but really the bottom line for GL is merchandising not quality story telling.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Okay, I had ZERO desire to see this movie and I am as big a Star Wars fan as they come, but my son asked to see this movie and I finally took him today.
After hearing all the negative reviews, I was really expecting a bomb of epic proportions.
Gotta say it - this was actually quite entertaining. I was really sick of stories told in the Clone Wars era, but this actually got me going quite a few times and I have to give it a good review. It is Star Wars in another format, a new medium, and a different style. My son loved it, and there were kids in the audience that absolutely were going ga ga over it. So much so that after the movie, there were a good half dozen boys play lightsaber fighting in the lobby. It was pretty cool.
So for a Sunday afternoon matinee with my boy, it was a good time. The only thing that bugged me a bit about Ziro was not his flamboyance, but his speaking Basic. But I guess since he is not in the Outer Rim but in the capital of the Republic, it makes sense that he speaks it. He's only got about 5 minutes of screentime, so it's not like he derails the flick.
Lots of action, decent humor, and lots of nods and foreshadowing to classic trilogy designs. So I was happy.

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I found myself looking at the armour and costumes. The scouts were extremely cool looking. As was the body armour worn by all of the jedi. It left me with a tun of ideas and new projects to add to my list.
As for the movie, I would have rather not seen it. In all honesty visually it was pretty good, and if I had watched it with no dialog, or even dialog in a different language, it probably wouldnt have been so bad. But I still have to sit and wonder, is everyone in the world really so afraid to tell george lucas 'Hay man, thats terrible. Maybe you should do that a different way'.
Between skyguy and r2ooey, to repeating the blatantly obvious over and over again, I have to say that im not such a fan.
Now, in the correct light, its not a terrible movie. If this is a tv show that will be on on saturday mornings, pretty good! Thursday/Friday evenings? Not so much.
The visuals though, I have to say, were striking. I always like to leave with some sort of positive. *shrug*

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
I agree that this would work better as a Saturday morning run, and I'll add that an evening showing to recap the previous week would be a good idea. But, no, exclusively as a night show wouldn't work.
I don't really know if anyone would have the balls to tell GL the truth about some of his dialog. I remember the old saying that either Harrison Ford or Carrie Fisher came up with..."George, you can type this **** but you can't say it."
My thought on his -sometimes atrocious - dialog is that he's going for the classic literature feel...sort of a Shakespearian air to it. I know he took the idea of all six movies from archetypes in history, from Greek tragedies to opera (I think?) and set the story in space. So, the dialog would seem to fit, if it were to be set to music on a stage where the actors were singing in Italian. But, as for English-speaking viewers, the simpler the better. You are absolutely right, Stormrider, we don't need to be told what is happening while we see it happening.
As a screen writing coach once told me, "Dialog is essential to move the story along, but excessive dialog can slow the story to a crawl and kill it."
David.

While I agree with your points on dialogue, Jaiden, are we even sure that Lucas wrote ANY of these episodes? He is an Executive Producer and from all accounts was heavily involved in production, but he does not have any screenwriting credits in the movie that I know of.
But I agree, I think if you are working for George Lucas, it must be very difficult to challenge him. It IS his playground and the money just keeps pouring in, so he must be doing something right.
That or it's a testament to just how much goodwill the OT generated 30 years ago.

A new analogy was bestowed on me the other night by a friend of mine;
She says to me, "You're like a girl that keeps waiting for her boyfriend to come around. Someday he'll be nice to me. I'll just give him another chance."
She's right and I'm an idiot.
I'm so ashamed.
I could'nt agree with you more, I have been waiting 10 years to come up with a reason why I still hang on. Nicely put. :cheers

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
Guess I'll chime in since I did see it last Wednesday. I'd give it a C- to a D+.......I totally agree that the Tartakovsky series blew this new chapter away!! This wasn't a travesty, but it was a letdown in story and mood.
I loved the textures and the fight scenes were decent, but it just missed the point for me....music was another area of disappointment for me as it was for so many others.
Why in 1977 when I was only 6 years old did I love a movie that was basically over my head, yet left an indelible mark some 30 years later for a franchise that I have spent countless hours delved in and spent thousands of dollars in my adult life recapturing to only continually be let down by every release since 1983?!? I realize "you can never go home", but this time I want my $8 back for sitting through what should have been released on its' intended medium....television. I probably would have accepted it much better 30 minutes at a time for free than being trapped for 90 minutes and feeling robbed of my eight bucks:doh Why do things have to be infantile to be entertaining to a new age of Star Wars fans....is George Lucas' audience he's trying to capture perpetual 4 year olds:? ....I just don't get it anymore. In 1977 Han shot first and we were all just enthralled by the marvel that was and is Star Wars.
Guess I'll stop since my "review" became a rant:doh

On a cool side-note; Anyone notice that the clone trooper called Rex had the Boba(pre-pro) "eagle eyes" painted on his helmet??
That was one thing I found to be a positive in the movie. And Anakins black shoulder armor. Looked just like the Vader armor. : )

I noticed those two details also, it made me feel a "disturbance" in the force and gave me chills.:lol

Re: Just watched CLONE WARS (special preview).......possible spoiler
i enjoyed the movie, but i merely watched it as a intro to a serries. the animation looks great. (though in some parts its a little rigid) i loved the action. the dialog was just as horrible as it was in revenge of the sith. (yoda made even less sense than he usualy does)
the only part i thought was a bit to much was trying to cram padme in at the end. it makes absolutly no sense to put her in that late in the story. same goes for ziro.
but the thing that killed the plot for me was... *drum roll*
Jabba's son, *** were they thinking.
all in all i enjoyed watching it. but no way that i'll ever accept any of this as part of star wars cannon

I just got a link to this article on starwars.com in my email http://www.starwars.com/kids/read/cw...22.html?page=1
it's about easter eggs in the Clone Wars movie, lots of interesting stuff. Check out the senate guards, new costume possibilities for sure!
