I have mixed feelings. I was kinda hoping for someone a little more unknown...
I too have mixed feelings. I've been one of those who think Joss Whedon would have been an interesting choice, but I'm not sure how popular of an opinion that really is.
I'm okay with it. I may be one of the few that liked the Star Trek reboot. I do think that Joss Whedon would have been a better choice though. His Firefly series had more of a Star Wars-ish feel than ANY of Lucas' Prequels...In my opinion. The way I see it, if Disney goes 'Pirates of the Caribbean' with it-it will be a huge success. If they go 'John Carter' with it-it's the death of Star Wars.
I also like the idea Abrams directing. I like the gritty, realistic feel he gave to Star Trek.

Plus, you can never have too much 'lens-flare'!:lol
*groan* Haha! Well LFL has confirmed that it's Abrams.
I would've much preferred someone who was less known and more "indie". I think Neill Blomkampf would've been a great choice. He stays outside the Hollywood scene, is young, has a love for Star Wars (as does Abrams supposedly), and has a healthy respect for practical effects. When he does use CGI, he tends to use it wisely and integrates it well. He definately doesn't use it just for the sake of using it like ol' George came to do.
Oh well...
I have mixed feelings as well. I think we will all watch his new movie coming out and see what he can bring to the Star Wars Universe...
I would have preferred someone different. It's not that I don't think J.J is a bad director, it's just that I remember a time when you were either Star Wars or Star Trek.
Joss Whedon would be a better choice than J.J. Abrams Serenity was great
Serenity performed very poorly at the box office and although star wars is always going to make money I believe disney would prefer a safer bet for their newly acquired cash cow. I am aware of Avengers strong BO performance. I enjoyed serenity and it's source material but neither was a great success.
