It's a shame...

You guys realize its the same on EVERY forum on the internets? (not every forum)

If someones asks on a car forum a simple question peoples answers 9 times out of 10 are either did you search or use the search function. Its a vital tool that people who dont KNOW how to use and simply ask. If you give a man a fish u feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime? Sound right? ;

Im sorry but i think you are being self contradictuary , teaching is nurtuerd people learn best by praise and encouragement,
so saying learn your self isnt teaching any one to fish
Saying use the search box isnt teaching some on to fish its just saying go fish

and if the exrta post are in danger of making this server crash , why add to the problem and creat more used space in an answer that isnt needed

I personally am a great advocate for the search featcher , i spend most my time on here typing missalanious fett related words in to it
and if sonme one does ask the old were do i get a helmet all try to ansewer them and then ppoint out to use the featcher but ive never had some one leave after my promting , were as some times , you may not realise this but it does tend to upset people when theyt are mew here the think its ful of Fett famliy friendly types who work to help each other out and this is how it looks on the out side but ask the wrong questions or make a statment not every one agrees with and , you are likly to get at least 3 responses of dribble

But see, that's an example where you did the footwork, tried to do it/find it but couldn't find a proper answer so you then asked. That's way different and speaking for me and Im sure others feel the same way, there's no "ill will" (if you will) in that situation. That's a situation of doing steps A-Z on your own and getting stuck on one or two here and there. That's a whole other animal from someone not willing to do any legwork and wanting A-z explained to them in detail while you hold their hand and give them a golden sticker.

But how is any one to know what he or any one in the same boat has done pryer to asking,
ei he starts a threed saying i need help with cape , you dont know that he hasnt spent the last month looking for a way to do it searching , googleing and mabey even experamenting on his own?

If you knew the answer in person would you tell a guy to go find it himself?

I actually do that pretty regularly. I think of it as teaching them to fish rather than giving them a fish :)

If someone has actually tried it for him/her self a bit first I'm much more likely to react positively.

For example, there's a big difference between:

"can someone tell me where to find pictures of boba fett" and "i looked in the gallery but couldn't find the back right quadrant of the ESB helmet. could someone help me out?"

I don't mind helping people, otherwise I'd have been gone after I finished my own suit. I do mind people asking me to do all the work for them for free :)

I prefer the saying, "Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for the night.
Set a man on fire and you keep him warm for the rest of his life."

 :wacko

Jinto this isnt a Fett help line...its tdh. A forum and every forum people recommend searching B4 asking...so by saying teach a guy to fish I was saying this is how to search guys use the advanced options and learn to use it. Most anyone on a computer knows how to search google its very similar to that just takes some use and then u can be a searching fool

PS this isnt meant to be mean i was just joking BTW...u guys are all awesome and this place needs more people for sure

I did my good deed for today in another thread and even provided a comparison pic..........yea me..

I will be using the set a man on fire quote in the near future I promise

I can see the point of wanting people to do their own research. I tried to when I joined and read through the threads and searched the gallery. I guess for me, I'd just rather help and answer a quick question or pull up a link or what not...guess I am just helpful kinda guy. Besides hopefully some one will be willing to return the favor one day. Than again I am still really new here.

I know i know, its all a bit of fun , and i think its good we can say our opinions and not fear retrebution,
there is always to sides to the coin , thats the way it is, no right or wrong just difrent point of veiws and all are valid

Half of the fun on these forums is the friendly banta

Yeh sometimes you know you do have to ask questions for sure....I know I can say that I try to be helpful...but sometimes its like REALLY? REALLY? Come on...you couldnt find that? I guess it depends what the question is...you guys can admit once and a while you'll see a thread asking for something that if they bothered to search at all theyd find it.

I will admit that I see those sometimes.....most of the time I ignore them.

The ones that say: WTB: Boba Fett cosutme, any help would be appreciated.

I know that my responses may come across a bit terse, so I abstain from the thread.

While I haven't been on this board as long, I have been a long time contributor to a batman forum for the past 12 years. The only thing I jump on quick is when someone within the first post violates a Term Of Service we have posted. WB comes after batman venders that offer costume parts much worse than LFL so over the years we've had to exclude any mention of money or sales on unlicensed items. There is a trading section but you have to be a member for so many months and have so many posts to get in.

That being said, I've always offered up advice readily even if I've answered the question 1001 times or more. The web site can be overwhelming when you first get on so a lot of people need help getting their bearings. I always offer up the search function in a kind way but otherwise try and answer the question. I've saved links over the years to quickly post top ten questions asked by the new guys and gals who join.

Ahh but it is a Fett help line if it were meant only to search through it would be a Wiki and not an open forum. I stick to my guns no one is forcing anyone to answer these newbs questions.
Understand I didnt start this thread to have it filled with more comments about bothersome newbs asking questions cut these guys a break and show them some love and make them feel welcome here more and more TDH is becoming a robot response filled sterile place and it wasnt that way when I joined. The heavies here have a wealth of info and experience that isnt cached somewhere here in an old thread but still in their minds and to not share it willingly is the "shame" I am refering to.

I think showing some initiative on your own to look up things is what differentiates those that are wanting to really get a lot out of this forum and those that are out to just make a quick Fett costume. Those that are wanting to build something nice will take the time to search, advanced search, and search some more before asking, and those that just want to make a quick Fett costume will start a thread versus doing much leg work.

I am all for helping people out especially if it is something that you know that others might not or that the person asking couldn't readily find out for themselves. I will try to help out when I feel like the person posting isn't just taking the lazy way out.

The search function does work if you use it and dive into the advanced search function as well. That may be a good project. Maybe if there was a walk through that showed how a basic and advanced search worked and what kinds of results you got back by using the different ones would help. However, if people don't want to take the time to use the search bar at the very top I don't know if they would take time to read a thread on how to use it either.

On a positive note I think the discussion is nice and that we as a TDH family are showing great matureness in our ability to communicate with each other. Way to go TDH.

Fettfanatic you said what I couldnt say tactfully haha...and I know I have told people to search as Ive been told myself on MANY forums over the years. It sounds stuck up when u say why didnt you search but if you answer EVERY posted question then its expected you can keep asking and asking when the search is there for a reason.

I can see all sides of the topic here, but when I read comments like "I haven't got time" then I'm sorry to say you've picked the wrong hobbie.

This hobbie demands time and patience, if you lack both then reconsider why you are here. there's nothing worse than a rushed Fett. Take your time and enjoy the ride cause you're gunna be on it for a long time.

We get this constantly on the Predator costume board. New people that come in and first post is "I want a full costume" or "I want a mask". The other common one there is new people starting topics immediately which have been covered countless times before. Some of the older members blast into these people instantly with USE THE SEARCH ENGINE. But then, others do spend the time to help them along. It's only when it gets really stupid do people start tearing into these people who have not searched before asking the most basic of questions.
