It's a shame...

More and more I am becoming disappointed by the snarky responses here when a newcomer has questions about topics gone by. I am a part of alot of forums and it is happening alot everywhere.

It's very difficult. All the answers are here for the most part, if people spend the time doing the research.

Those that have done the work before really don't want to spend the time digging up threads for a new person when that person could do it themselves.

It's tough to answer the same question a dozen times without getting a bit sarcastic about it.

This is one of the reasons I have a bit of a problem with Sansweet's SW:INSIDER column sometimes. I know he gets some of the same questions all the time but there are a lot of KIDS that write in to him and I think sometimes he forgets that sometimes.

As for forums, it is hard and I've been guilty of it myself. I've also, believe it or not, turned up no matches searching for stuff I KNOW were discussed before. It does happen.

Yeah, that's about the long and short of it. We get that alot at Mercs. Abotu the first hundred times I dug up threads and answered questions for people it was easy and no big deal. By the 200-300 count it was beyond tired. Now I usually post this...

Or, I'll thell them to search for it politely. One guys had the guts to say he seacrhed a specific topic and gave the exact wording he used. He said it turned up ZERO hits. i did the search using the same wording and got about 14 hits for him.

Just like with anything else, I think it's a generational gap. The old guard had to do things the hard way and for the most part shared well with each other. WHen we needed to find out something we researched it ourself until we hit a dead end and then asked specific targeted questions for answer. The newer folks seem to want it all now on a silver platter with no work. i'll see posts like "Where can I buy a complete painted set?" or, "Can you tell me how to build best-card-gahm?" If they spent an hour on any forum they could either find all the answers theyre looking for or, at least find all the trheads to book mark and look at later. So, I guess it's just frustrations. I'm not going to walk anyone from A thru Z on a forum. You study A thru Z and when you get stuck on H, Q and Y, I'm more than happy to help because you've shown a sticking ability and a desire to do some leg work on your own.

It IS the new generation of silver spooners. It's not just evedent on theses forums but everywhere. The youth of America only want to whine and have it served up to them instantly. Don't get me started on their parenting skills...or should I say lack of?

I agree with Woody. If someone asks me where to get a certain piece of a costume, I have no qualms about sharing information. If I can help someone to make a great costume, I feel very pleased. I am also very grateful for the help I've been given by friends who have shared their knowledge and experience with me - including new friends I have made here on TDH.

you also have to rmember, TDH has literally hundreds of pages of stuff, If i have a question that can be easily answered by asking instead of spending my weekend trolling through said hundreds of pages, I do that. Also remember building mthods and contacts and vendors have changed over time. The tutorial on putting together a set of ROTJ gaunts isn't the same today as it was when people first started to build Fett, so I will usually ask for the newest and start there. My process is this, if it's a simple question, I give an asnwer. If the same person keeps coming back with questions about the same topic, THEN I get a bit irritated.

You know its a shame there isnt a how to use a forum thread or video...most all forums work the same way and with something like this forum where theres info YEARS old you can bet that what ur gonna ask has been covered...so you should use the search function first its a given on all forums

I don't mind answering the questions because they were my questions this time last year. And I agree with Muad'dib about searching for a thread that I KNOW is there but can't find it. Several times I have given up and just asked for a link. Then I save the link to my favorites for when the next guy asks. I am far from the now generation, seeing that I am pushing 40, but I deal with them all the time at my job, this is fun so I can handle a little impatience once in a while.

If you knew the answer in person would you tell a guy to go find it himself? Likely no you tell him the answer. The titles to old threads dont always match the needs of the question and the search function does not work for all questions. I know it's the internet but I am still a nice person here and in real life.

QUOTE; The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and is awere of how little they know,.

The worst part is, the peolpe that right of new members were new members a year ago and had the same questions ,And in some cases had the same response's given to them
so they pay it forward (Was it plesent when it was done to you ) no so dont do it to them
not every one has Deploma in Fettolligie

I can understand where people are coming from.
I am new to this forum and still combing through all of the old threads, I can imagine that if I had been here for years and had seen all of the same questions time and time again it would start to annoy me a little bit.
Hopefully if and when I need to ask questions I will already have been through all the old threads first.

The problem is some people just want to big note them self and in some cases just need any excuse to blow out there threed count ;embarase;;
and they see an easy mark and take it,,

there are heaps of people whome have left disgrunteld after being shot down by foaks with not much more knowladge on the subject than them,
i think alot of it comes down to insucurities in real life , on he internet you can be made to believe your a
hero when in real life you are just a number ;)

Good call Woody, and all the following points of view I share to a degree also. Sometimes I just don't have the time to read a ton of post on here but I do try to help out when it is something I know a lot about.

If I could champion one guy, aside from yourself Woodster, who always tries to help or answer question on here I think Nate would be that man.

You guys realize its the same on EVERY forum on the internets? If someones asks on a car forum a simple question peoples answers 9 times out of 10 are either did you search or use the search function. Its a vital tool that people who dont KNOW how to use and simply ask. If you give a man a fish u feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime? Sound right? There are several ways to search you can search by key words in a thread with search post option in advanced searching...or you can search the titles of the threads option that only looking over the titles of the thread...these two things can make or break your search...if your looking for gauntlet closer threads and you only type gauntlets your going to comb through thousands of threads but if you search more specifically and get less threads, by searching the titles you should find less and more threads pertaining to what your looking for. I dont think its people being jerks about anything but sooner or later if people asked every question they had the forum itself would be overwelmed with alot more posts...the server doesnt have an infinite capacity.

i want to thank all of you that have been on here a long time, helping to put together what is a amazing site/forum....with your invaluable knowledge. i would love to spend days on here but just havent got time, jobs, family...any help you guys can give to us new fett builds is fantastic.

u guys know. if u search u can pull up a 100 ways to do something . ppl that have done it know the best way . good ex. i was trying to do my cape . found a few diffrent ways to do it . i ask in a thread Art gave me a link that was the real deal . how to cut out of the right half shelter . the others were just making one the right size . now if u pull up that thread the link is gone . so should someone ask again or just cut up a duffal bag for a cape .
it is a big put off to be shot down when asking a ?.

But see, that's an example where you did the footwork, tried to do it/find it but couldn't find a proper answer so you then asked. That's way different and speaking for me and Im sure others feel the same way, there's no "ill will" (if you will) in that situation. That's a situation of doing steps A-Z on your own and getting stuck on one or two here and there. That's a whole other animal from someone not willing to do any legwork and wanting A-z explained to them in detail while you hold their hand and give them a golden sticker.
