Interesting thing about "Interest" threads

When I was first building my Jango I was excited to see all of the interest threads on everything from boots, to gloves, to Westars and beyond. Many times I thought about signing up but began to further research the archives and see that the interesting thing about "interest" threads are that every one I've seen has gone nowhere!

The story is often the same. A guy knows a guy who is ready to produce en masse the movie accurate costume part of your dreams. It's just dissapointing to read that a sure fire maker, suddenly dropped off the map. I really feel for the poor souls who have invested capital up front only to wait months and years with no item ever coming to them.

I guess the point here is that if a member on this board really has lined up a maker for a particular part it would seem that the best approach would be to get that item made first. After it has met specs, price and delivery terms then offer it in the public forums. ;)

I'm also aware that generating interest gets the price lowered and coaxes the maker to get busy as the financial payoff is greater with volume. I'm just curious if anyone has ever seen one of these mass ventures actually work out on time, in budget and the item delivered as ordered?

This thread isn't being posted to focus on any particular "interest" thread. It's just a general observation from a TDH member who is dreaming of the movie accurate machined Westars, fabricated boots, leather gloves and other greeblies that continue to be lost in the interest thread universe.

:cheers

Well, for those of us that do "not" disappear with peoples hard earned money, it's a matter of only being human when things get behind, and projected dates get fouled up.

Interest/Run threads are not perfect. It's easy to say that makers should get all their ducks in a row "before" something is posted for sale in that format. Although I agree with you (to a point), hind site is never going to be any better than the best of that individual's abilities to predict the future. Even if he/she has done their homework, and performed trials ... it can still fall apart at the most inopportune time. Unfortunately, you can't always foresee all of the pitfalls that lay in wait. I just went through that myself with the ESB Side-Arm Holster.

And sometimes it takes an interest thread/sale thread to get the psychic juices flowing  Input from the community is a big thing here (y)

Chris

well, the problem is people collecting money BEFORE they have the said product made.

there is nothing wrong with an interest list as long as the cats don't get paid before they have the product molded and ready to go.

they get all this money and have not done anything yet..........then either failure on the part of the propmaker and they have already spent said money or they are just scumbags that takes off with the peoples money.

i like you have seen several threads where the latest greatest thing is coming and the guy nevers delivers. jango boots anyone????

Well, a lot of you may not remember .. but I was one of the only prop makers spanning TDH and the RPF for literally years - that would absolutely NOT accept pre-payments for a single shred of fiberglass. If someone jumped the gun, I'd refund it immediately.

The problem is - after having so many forum members, time and time again - bail on the "maker", it starts to hurt too much. If you've invested so much money into a project and a bunch of people back out it leaves you in a bad way. Personally, it's happened too many times that I care not count. It came to a point where I had to go that route.

The next thing you might ask, is why don't I just take a deposit then? I've been down that road too. It's much easier for a member to ask for a refund when it's a small deposit. There's more to it than that of course. But requiring pre-payments - is asking for a total commitment.

Unfortunately, there are people that come, and go. And some go with members money. It's very sad. That is why I encourage everyone new that I talk to, to be careful. This is the internet after all. It's always best to ask the community who is reputable. Regardless of how slow some of us are to respond ;)

It should be a balance. Protection for both buyer and seller. But unless TDH turns into e-Bay, it's never going to be any different I'm afraid.

Chris

** EDIT**

I missed the part about to whom you were referring - Jango Boots. Yes, that was the biggest shock to me here at TDH in a LONG time. It was for a lot of members (not just those that were stung I mean).

Once again guys, this thread was never meant to poke anyone in a sensitive spot. I just have gone through the archives and haven't found one case where this has worked out. Not to say it hasn't, mostly for me it's been looking at Jango Boots and Westars. No one's honor is in question.

i hear ya, chris. you are one of the guys that never fails to deliver. we may not get along but i have never heard anyone say anything bad about your products or say they never got their part from you.
people that say they are interested, you make thier helmet or whatever then they are like, oh dude ,i am broke right now and so on. makes me pretty upset too.

but it is the guys that have not been around long , start an interest list then go bye bye with folks money. the jango boots being one. that guy ripped off alot of folks and he was not a new guy.

speaking of new guys, this is my 500th post, WHOOT!

the only way to stop this is for new people to do thier research before they send money.
they are warned in the cargohold if they read the rules and stuff.

Absolutely, I agree completely (y) I admit, I haven't read the rules lately so I don't know what has been changed in the recent past about new members selling items. The last I knew it was 2 weeks? And that is good of the Administration to do. I think TDH is following suit with many other forums in that regard. BUt if it gets any worse out there with these new guys popping up and running with the funds ... we may start seeing those rules becoming more and more strict. And it's going to just plain suck. It would disinterest people to an extent and perhaps make them not want to join :(

As with everything else in life, there's always someone out there that "kinks" things for everyone else :facepalm

The more each of us that have been around for a while can do for our newer members - the better.

And Thanks Mr. Bungle :) Happy 500th :cheers

No, no .. I didn't take it that way at all. I'm sorry if I came across that way. It certainly wasn't intended. I saw that you were fairly new, and was actually just sort of trying to educate a bit about why it is that way, that's all (y) And although you may be newer here, that's not to say that you're new to "props" in general .. and I really should have been more sensitive to that :)

Does your board name have anything to do with Zelda? I like it

Chris

What a good thread and some intresting points ,but i would have to say that i will not buy anything from a noob on here !! i would rather buy my stuff from a trust rep like Chris fp ;),LS4U ,BM but you get the idea ...lol
I have 1 concern though ..right or wrong on this too plzz ...
Would it be fair to have from a buyer prospect to ...to at least have a phone number for the seller in case things foul up or they had no updates by emails ect ??
To be honest and lets not play mind games yes as its only fair in the end to the potential buyer !!!
It just sickens me in the end when people say stuff via mails and pm when the poor buyer doesnt have there item, im sorry if ive upset anyone about this but cmon its only fair right ,to has some form of comfort comms via phone rather than emails.
I was one of the poor peeps on the whole ruffkin experience while he bs us and made excuses ,this is my only bad experience from here so far on TDH .
Everything else is good with me though :)

Nothing to do with Zelda. Not familiar with that is there a Rupidupe in there? I'm not sensitive and you'd find it nearly impossible to offend me. I've been here awhile but didn't join right away. I spent a few months cruising archives and learning before I joined and started posting. Like I said before you're in Klamath Falls, I have land out there, beautiful...you can go by sometime and take some updated pics for me..I'll send you a surveyors fee...LOL! :cheers

Oh, and forget I asked about Zelda then .. I just made myself look like more of a nerd than we already appear to the outside world

Thank you :)

And I don't think that is out of line to ask for at all. I rarely think about offering it to members because in all seriousness, there are so many members here with my phone number already, that if I were to ever let this board down you'd see it posted left and right I'm sure  But no, that is not an unreasonable thing to ask for - and receive .. from a seller (y)

Chris

I'm kidding about taking pics...I'll drag my silly self out there and check on it sometime. I have land right on Klamath lake. When I get in town I'll give you a shout. I'll buy ya a beer or two if you have time.

Sounds great man (y) But, the offer still stands if ya need me ;)

Oh, and I can't help it ... in "The Legend of Zelda" games from Nintendo, the currency used was "Rupies". Or was it "Rupees"? I dunno, it's been so long

Chris

Thanks Chris for the back up (y)
But i have asked for a members phone number in the past and they declined !!
Why ?? ....:cry
All i wanted was some info gees is that too much to ask ?

Thank you :)

Nope, not too much to ask. In fact, I think anyone that is acting as a "vendor" should make their profile info public too  But when it comes right down to it, it's personal preference. And they are not obligated to do so.

It's not the Administration's desire to want to be involved in such matters unless they can assist in some way, and they do everything they can to protect their members without jeopardizing the forum with legal matters - but maybe one day we can propose some sort of system where vendors can submit verified contact info to the administration for future use if need be. That way, those that would rather not be bothered (for lack of a better term, I'm not trying to insult anyone) can still keep their privacy. It's not just about vendors gone bad. There have been cases where members have had very serious things happen in their personal lives, such as a car accident for instance. No one knows any better until a family member comes aboard to tell everyone that there was a life changing event. It may not always be their fault.

It's the nature of the hobby though. And probably always will be. I could drop dead today, and it's a sure fire bet that it will be a while before anyone knows why "Fettpride" went "bad" all of a sudden  It's a risk we take. After-all, this is technically the black market we're talking about here. I hate to say it in terms like this, but I've had to in the past. We're not Wal-mart. or Best Buy. Just ordinary people trying to provide a needed service, and make a few bucks for our time. Well, MOST of the time. The ESB Holster Project was nearly a loss for me

Very well stated and I couldn't agree more. I've been in this costuming game for awhile and I have never been more impressed with anyone's work then I have been with FP.
