**UPDATE** 8/26 Hand Crafted, Wooden, EE-3 Webley Stocks

    Hello All,
I've recently received my resin cast of MK-1 Webley and Scott Flare gun from SEVEN here on TDH. This kit is really AMAZING, and if you can get in on the list, I would highly recommend it. This is THE finest EE-3 kit that I've been lucky enough to come across and an amazing price at that. In case you didn't see it, here's the link:

    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/budgetfett-no-4-interest-webley-scott-resin-kit-27826/

Anyway, I recently did some decal work for a local carpenter/woodworker shop and I mentioned this kit to him. I then inquired about getting the resin stock that comes with this kit made in wood, just like the real one. This would be identical to the "real deal" stock that came with SEVEN's actual gun, and would come finished and ready to stain or paint.

He will sell them $50 each plus shipping(US) for the FIR version.

If you're interested, please post here so we can get these out to everyone. I have gotten SEVEN's approval to use his cast as the wooden template to be sure. In keeping with his gracious kit offer, I will NOT be making any $$ on this at all, just getting this into everyones hands.
So, if you're interested PLEASE POST!!!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 1/3/09: Pics posted from the carpenter(greg). He also got back to me about the options of wood that can be used. The coices will be:
    1. Fir (which is shown in the pics) - $50
    2. Walnut - $100

Fir will be the least expensive wood, $50 plus shipping(for Fir type wood). I will get the cost for the other wood types ASAP. He will also be taking payments soon as well, so keep your eyes peeled. They will ship in order of payment, but post up when you send your PayPal.

Also, just a thought here, but since your having someone who's very knowledgeable on wood working making these stocks, could he also go ahead and stain them, as he would know the best technique / color / type of stain to best replicate the original webley stock?

GBH we did one recently for a client... was made based off the MR Rifle stock, and was maple finished with regular wood oil (about four coats) and steal wood to finish.

I'll see if I can get him to email some pics today, until I can pick mine up this week.

I'll also ask about staining, but my guess is that he will have to charge more for that.

I'd stain it myself... the cheaper the better.
And what kind of wood would he be using?

    Thanks for doing these btw.

I was debating on finding someone who can do this, (or maybe even try myself) so your timing is perfect! Im interested in two please. I would much prefer to stain them myself.

You got it man, list updated.

He did get back to me via email today, and he let me know that the wood he chose was Fir. This was to keep costs as low as possible, and still provide a good, solid, stock.

He did say that requests for other types of wood could be made, but the cost would also go up. I'm gonna stick with the fir personally.

As for the staining, I will ask that as well. What is the generally accepted Stain color for ESB and ROTJ??

I will provide more info as well as pics, as soon as I have it. Thanks!

Could you check with your source and ask about the price difference for Walnut or Hickory stocks. Walnut is extremely strong and is a common wood used for gunstocks. It also tends to stain a little better than Fir does.

Nice tip, FettFanatic, its good to hear some knowledge on the subject. It is a good price, so I am also interested in the price on a walnut upgrade if you could ask the maker? If not then fir is fine. Thank you

Webley stocks are made from English black walnut. A little more expensive and a very hard wood. You would want stain it with more than one color stain. STain it once with a black stain, sand it down, and go back over it with a red stain. That's the technique that was commonly used for gunstocks during WWI and WWII. It's quick but still comes out looking like it has a lot of depth. And if you find the right
of wood it almost looks elegant and regal.

My guess is that the wooden ones WILL be lighter than the solid resin one. The resin one is VERY solid, and has a good weight to it. When I pick mine up, i'll weigh both of them to be sure.

Hey Scott, hows Walnut?? It has a dark tone already, and all you would have to do is use wood oil and steel wool to finish....of course considering you did an ESB stock.

    kinda like this:

That DOES look fabulous, but wasn't on his list. I'm sure for the right price you could get EXACTLY what you wanted. I'm actually trying to get him to join TDH since he's a star wars fan(vader mostly).

For me, my ROTJ EE-3 is getting painted black so the wood isn't too much of a concern. I just wanted the look, feel and weight of the wood.

Showing my ignorance here, What does the steel wool do for you??

steel wool is used to pull up the fibers of the wood. so when you sand it down it gets as smooth as possible. if you use tru-oil on your stock *tru oil is a specially made oil for rifle stocks which makes it shine* you use steel wool to pull up marks on the stock. hope this was helpful

Yep, sorry for the lull in follow ups. The Carpenter(Greg) emailed me about it and he's going forward with the WALNUT stock. They seem to be the preferred wood, but he will stiff offer the less expensive Fir. He didn't give me a price for WALNUT yet since he's still not completed the 1st prototype yet but it will be more then the Fir wood. I'm hoping to have the final numbers this weekend. I'll keep everyone posted.

Re: Interest\signup for Hand Crafted, Wooden, EE-3 Webley Stocks

Sorry guys, not too much to report actually. I DID go to his shop to check in, and he showed me the Huge slab of walnut that he had purchased. He also showed me the invoice for it, and it was $300 just for the walnut. It's a piece about 24in wide, 40in long and 3in deep. I don't know ANYTHING about wood, but he said that it was a GREAT price since walnut is VERY EXPENSIVE. He's made "jigs" for each individual gun stock and they DO look very nice. The Fir ones will be done 1st, and will be much cheaper. The walnut ones will be done second, and will be $50 plus shipping. I will start an official "SIGNUP" list once into production.
So, I pressed him for a completion time for these and he's still not sure. He's gotten extremely busy and since this isn't a huge profit maker, it's not his priority right now.
I apologize for the delay, but it's completely out of MY hands. If you CAN wait for these , I promise you that it WILL be worth it. I hope you guys understand!!!

I'm glad that NO money was collected, so there's no issue there. All I can say is that whne these DO get going, it will be worth the wait.. Sorry guys.....

I would jump on these guys, as I couldnt sell a resin and foam filled stock for less than that, because of the time and money involved in making them.

So to anyone that wants one of my kits, ill take $20 right off the top if you dont want the stock!.

Nope, no word at all. I was topping by his shop on a weekly basis, with NO progress. Then that turned into phone calls, and I haven't had much time to follow up with him. I feel awful that it didn't pan out, but at least no one is out of any money. Sorry guys.

If anything happens with them i'll be sure to post up.

Re: Interest\signup for Hand Crafted, Wooden, EE-3 Webley Stocks

    Guys,
After some recent prodding, I contacted the carpenter again and let him know how disappointed I was. He thouroughly apologized, and explained his overwhelming workload, as well as lack of profit he would make. It took MUCH longer to make than he anticipated, and the walnut was VERY, VERY expensive.
I got a call today to come by his shop, so I of course I stopped by. To my surprise, he had completed (2) stocks!!!! I had NOT ever gotten mine either, so needless to say I was psyched and in disbelief. So, i'm going to take one and there is currently (1) spare, for now.
He apologized again, and said to make this worth his while, he would need to charge considerably more than he first offered. HE would like to get $100 shipped for this one, due to the high cost of the walnut and the amount of work that it took to make this. Are there any woodworkers out there that can confirm that this cost is accurate for this amount of work and this type of wood? I just don't know enough about wood to say either way. If there's still interest, he'll do a few at a time and let me know.
Anyways, if someone does want it, just post up and it's yours. I'll PM you HIS PayPal addy if interested. 1st come, 1st serve. Sorry I couldn't do better, but it's completly out of my control.
They are SUPER lightweight, hard as a rock, and the wood is SO dark, it's amazing. Here's a few pics to show how NICE these are:

Like I said, if you DO happen to still want it, just post up.

Is there anyone out there who knows anyone who can make these from a cheaper, lighter wood ? If it has any grain, it would still look good, then just stain it.

Walnut is very expensive. Even more so if you wanted to use English Black Walnut(which is what they used to make the stocks on the original Webleys).
You're looking at about $30 for a piece just barely big enough to make the stock. Then it'll take you about 2 days to shape it properly.
Then another 2 days to stain it, sand it, stain it again, sand it one more time, and clear coat it.
    So yeah,
$100 per stock sounds about right with all of the work involved.

Walnut is not Cheap.. but if this is for ESB, then it's totally correct...so the extra charge is warrented. Let me know when to pay, I'm still in.

***OH and Please don't stain mine, if at all possible.... I want mine plain.

Spidey, Good eye. I have it here in front of me and I didn't see that. I called Greg, and let him know. He said that he'll take $50 shipped for it since it's not "perfect". It's up to you, otheriwse still up for grabs. He also said that he'll continue to make these, as his time permits, and when there's a lull in his shop. As he makes them and offers them, i'll keep posting them here for others.

Just to touch base on this as well, the Walnut stock is MAYBE 1/4 of the weight of the resin. My ROTJ blaster is SO much lighter, and comforatble to carry, it's rediculous. I was really surprised HOW light it was, and also how HARD this wood is. You can knock on it and there's a "THUD".

I would really like to see this through for everyone, is there still interest if I get him to agree to $75(shipped), and a timetable??

If so, i'll start a new thread.....

No No NO, there will be NO pre-payments. I made that request of him. When there's something in hand to ship, then he'll let me know. Once they're ready, you send HIM payment(not me).
