i think my hard drive crahed:(

hey everyone, i think my harddrive crashed. when i turn on my comp it doesnt laod up windows, it says that a file is missing. any idea wat to do?? thanks

What file does it say is missing? You also might want to check if there's a floppy disk in the drive, some computers give them boot priority.

If not, put in the system recovery CD that came with the computer. Turn it off and then back on. See if that works.

its missing a registry file (reg. file failure)
there is no floppy (doenst even haev a floppy drive) and i put in a recovery cd. still nothing.

sometimes you are able to go in the back way copying some code, which then allows you to use the system restore. If that doesn't work then unfortunately it's rebuild time.

let me know if you are interested and I can send you the link I used, when I got the dreaded call from my 5 year old.... to which I came home.. supper, beer, type code / copy code/ copy system restore file, reboot, use system restore all has been well since. Saved me from rebuilding the system from scratch.

You could get a cable to back up any data off the drive that you may want, that will go from IDE to USB. Then you can use another computer to get your music, pictures, and whatever else you may want to keep. If your hard drive is clicking, you could pay big bucks for some company to get the data off the hard drive, or look in to freezing your hard drive. I would google the freezing before getting started. A friend of mine froze his hard drive and got most of his data back before it crashed again, so it's worth a shot!

You will either need the recovery CD and if that doesnt work you will need to reformat and reinstall Windows and everything else you had on the comp. This happened to me about a month ago - the entire registry was corrupt and I had to do the resinstall... it wasnt fun.
