    Golf clubs or Fett Blaster???

Here is my thought. Father's Day and my birthday are within the next week. My beautiful and lovely wife asks me the eternal question, "What do you want?" I reply MR Fett Blaster. She says, "Heck no! I am not buying any of THAT STUFF for you!" She said that I can but that stuff on my own. So instead she want to buy me a new set of Big Bertha's that I also want. I managed to sucker my wife into marrying me three years ago and just within the last 6 months has she found out how deep my nerdiness goes. She says, "At least you aren't out at the bars or doing drugs."

So I put it to to my TDH family.

How do you bring others (Spouse, Girlfriend, Boyfriend) into the light (or dark) and help them accept or even enjoy the things that we are so passionate about? Give me your thoughts and stories folks. Please.

You tell them that they should of known about your Fett Headed-ness before they married you.

There lies the problem...I already kept it surpressed then BAMMMM!! I let her have it with both barrels. THe truth is that I have an 11 year old step son that brought it out in me again and we are having a blast doing the father and so costuming.

I kiddingly call my wife the "Shoe Whore" because if it isn't diamonds its shoes. I even had to give her an entire closet in our new house devoted entirely to the Shoe Mecca.

Hmm. Tell her if she gets the blaster you love her long time. If not, get lost. j/k, I don't know. If she won't buy the blaster for you, get her to buy the clubs instead. Then sell the clubs on eBay, and put that money toward the MR blaster. Duh

But in all seriousness, I have no idea what you should tell her. Sorry Ivan, I got nothin'. But you can try convincing her that it's healthy for you and your son for bonding.

I say go for the blaster. You can buy golf clubs at garage sales for cheap, sometimes free. Never the case with a blaster

That just sucks. Is she not supportive of your love for SW? Sometimes people can be so selfish. I say do what Lost says and sell the clubs and by the blaster. She should be happy that you are bonding with the step-son.

I don't think its like that at all. She supports it, she just laughs at me and shakes her head a lot. She is even letting me have a Star Wars theme at our big Halloween bash this year. She is going to be Slave Leia, my son is also Fett, 14 yr daughter as Padme, 2yr daughter as R2D2 and the Great Dane as DOG VADER!!!
Let me say that over all my wife rocks. She tolerates me, the police dept and the military. She is overall supportive of me. I am just looking for suggestions that help nudge her closer to this Fettish of ours and help her see the necessity of a nice blaster. I think she is way more comfy shopping for clubs than collectibles. She is very appreciative of the time with the boy as we work on our 'tumes together.8)

Not to mention the visibility is lacking in my bucket on the back 9...

Did I mention that my golf game could really use the new clubs??(and a lot of practice)

Not really. She has seen most of them and loves Ewoks but mainly she just laughs, shakes her head and lets me do my thing. I try not to gripe about the cost of shoes and she makes an effort not to faint when I mention the price of Fetting. I guess its fair as I only had 3 pairs of shoes before I met her and now...*sob*

I know that I became a real SW fan about six years ago. I watched all the older ones when I was younger with my dad, but was not into it that much. My ex was a fanatic about SW. He is the one that explained most of it to me and watched them with me. He is the one that got me into it BIG TIME. Maybe you should try watching them with her and explaining things. I know when I was younger watching them I didn't understand some of the stuff that was going on. Just a suggestion on maybe getting her interested or at least understanding it. I am now more of a fan than my ex is.

That's a good suggestion. She might just not understand the concept so she is simply indifferent about SW. If you can get her to watch all the movies, and explain to her, she me actually like it!

But it was still funny when you told me she asked you "What's a JAWA?!"

Some really sound advice. I recently purchased the SE Trilogy edition from ebay. I planned on sitting on them until the time was right and watch them with her. The other night the moment presented itself and I sprung for the movies hoping to get ANH in before the moment was lost. Man, was I mad when I tore open the used movies to find that all the discs were gone with the exception of the bonus disc. I about went up in flames because I already left positive feedback for the woman that sold them to me.

Here is an idea....Step one: get clubs. Step Two: practice. Step Three: Go Pro. Step four: all the money you make form going pro can be used to build the sweetest Fett!! It might take some time but should work. Good Luck and it does sound like she is supportive of it, she just needs to get a little more into it. Possible Ewok costume maybe? Cheers!

Good call. How 'bout Tiger Fett? Or Fett Woods? I could accomplish both, make millions and bring attention to our cause. Hmmm, golf in armor...It sounds nice.:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup

Let's not forget. "Boba Woods" Sounds a little redneck but I could make it work.

Well, Why does you wife bother asking what you want then turn around and say no to your answer...
    Sounds like my wife...lol.

Seriously, both are just things/objects, I say get what you want.

My wife asked me the same question once and I wanted an ipod or iphone for the longest time BUT Fetpride came out w/ V.03 armor... she gave me what I wanted, sure.. she made a fuss but its what I wanted and i'm happy for it.

Clubs are so easy to get but a good Fett Blaster... now thats something else.

I would tend to agree with Voltaire here, I've got a girlfriend who's funny, gorgeous, and loves me, and loves Star Wars, and anything I LOVE.

She also loves the 501st, I lent her my anakin outfit, and she tailored it to her size, all on her own, and then attended several 501st events with me, and I can see myself with her for the rest of my life, and she told me she wanted to get married to me, and things are just perfect, you have to find that someone who loves you for you, and not just part of you, but all of you, because you have to be together for a whole lifetime, and you might as well enjoy it.

So If I were you, I'd tell the wife, listen honey, this is me, this is who I am, and I'm not gonna change, it would make me so happy if you could see it from my perspective, because the simple things like this are things that I enjoy.

Or something like that...I'm not married, so....I don't know for sure...but hey, worth a shot

Re: Golf clubs or Fett Blaster???

I would have to say that there a ton of valid points here too but lets not forget the reason for the question. I am not interested in "trading in" my wife as there is no way in HE** that I could do better than her. That is truly NOT an option. Besides I don't think anyone could tollerate me like she does. I am just interested in bring the story line that we are so passionate about into her life a little and have an understand what makes us strive for such perfection on something that is pure fiction and fantasy. I could not begin to tell you why I am such a huge Fett fan. Some would say that its the adventure. Well, I have seen 7 combat tours and been a street cop in a large city for over 8 years so I think I covered that. I would only guess that its the mystery, story line, characters, music, drama and a VERY well made series (IMO. Yes I even liked TPM).
My wife and I share numerous other hobbies together including Scuba, Skiing, Boating, OU Football and Jimmy Buffet concerts/music. But she doesn't hunt with me (even though she loves the meat) and I don't scrap book with her (I would rather chew on aluminum foil while shaving my wrists in a warm bath) So we are seperate and I want to help her understand what it is we do and why we do it. (Neither of which I can even answer)

So I put it to the forum to share your stories and advice. I LOVE the sense of humor that fills this place. You are a witty witty crew here. CHEERS and thanks for any help you can bare.

Nah, I don’t have it all my friend, you do. Though I would say that for most women around here (in my world, that is) SW fandom is a total deal killer, which is the only reason I even maintain the slightest presence on the Internet, once I find her, I am off. I have been down this rocky road to many times since 97’ (it wasn’t until 2003 did I even realize my fandom was having an impact on my relationships) , so since I am still technically single, full disclosure is a must upfront. Hey, the 4th bedroom in the house is gonna be the Star Wars room! I got to be fair to a woman (and myself) if that ain’t her idea of a household.

I mean simply for me, I do this because yes it is fun as can be and keeps me very busy, But it is the sense of community and how you (a guy or girl in plastic sheets) can affect someone so much. The event that comes to mind is when the 501st troops at hospitals where there are terminally ill kids / burn vistims / many others. It is humbling to think that we might be the last thing to make that kid smile. It's sad to think like that but it is a touching event. I am looking foward to eventually participating in a troop like that as a Boba. That is why I do it personally, it isn't just a Con thing, it is truely a community thing. Wether it is in the SW community, Fett community, or just in your local community. I think once she understand the magnatude of what it is the 501st is, she might be more supportive in your actions. Personally, my girlfriend supports me and now wants to do a TK!!! But it is after what I explained to her that made her realize what exactly the 501st is and what we do. Hope that helps on a more serious note. Cheers!! P.S. I heard the Hulk was really good!

Wow, I have not been fortunate enough to have any dealings with the 501st. I had hoped to join after I finished my Fett but you convinced me that I will join if they will accept me. Thanks. Good Answer

What about those that develope the Fettish over time and become one of us??? I could see the possible impact to a relationship. Thats why ultimately my spouse is No. 1! The kids 2. The dog 3. Work 4. Life and hobbies last on the priority scale. People who make kids the priority find themselves staring at a stranger when the kids leave home.

I am getting my boyfriend into wearing my Fett just so I can oogle over him in it , lol

I met him while doing my costuming, at Star Wars Weekends at Disney. So the only problem we have is what to do with our combined collections. lol

I'm always surprised when I hear about spouses who do not share the interest. It seems to me that one is attracted to people with similar tastes. I don't want to come off sounding judgemental, I mean I'm sure there are many good reasons you two are a duo. It's just that when I met my better half we were both involved in activities that we shared an enjoyment of, and we later grew to know each other's interests in such areas as sci-fi, costuming or whatever.

I guess in short what I'm saying is I don't really know what to say about this question.

Just to add my two cents.

There is only one MR Fett blaster and it will most likely go up in value over the years.

Big Bertha clubs will be around for a while and most likely by next year be improved somehow.

There will always be another, better set of golf clubs but only one MR Fett blaster.

But then again if you can afford it let her buy the clubs for you and later on get the blaster.

My guess is that she wants to get you something that you may not buy for yourself. I am sure you wouldn't hesitate to get something SW that you want. And you probably ALWAYS want SW stuff. Perhaps she just wants to get you something for once that isn't SW. Besides, you know that you will find a way to get the blaster if it is something that you really want.

Re: Golf clubs or Fett Blaster???

It's as simple as filling in the blank:
"I am passionate about _____ and I spend time and money on it, as it makes me happy"

By that I mean, everyone has something that interests them. It's different for everyone. But what I am passionate about is no different from what the next guy/girl is passionate about. The only difference is individual value on other 'options'.

If a woman is passionate about shoes, cloths, diamonds etc, and spends $100's if not $1000 on them, we all nod and accept that. It's a universal passion or interest.

If a guy is passionate about costumes, props, and movies, and spends $100's if not $1000 on them, most see that as odd or nerdy as it's not too widely accepted as 'normal'. But why? Is it really any different then the above example?

    I don't think so.

The trick is convincing people to be open minded, and not be prejudice about the worlds variety of things people find interesting and entertaining. Just because it isn't one persons cup of tea, doesn't mean that it has less value.

So the real question is, is she not buying the Blaster 'cause she doesn't want to encourage your 'nerdiness' or that she wants to get you something that isn't a $400 paper weight?
    Just my two cents.

Seven - you pretty much hit the nail on the head with regard to how I feel on this. For instance I always thought it was unfair how people who are enthusiastic about sports get treated with more respect than people who are enthusiastic about stuff like SW costuming. On the one hand, we have people who paint their bodies in their fave team colours and go out hooting and acting like fools - what do people say about them? Oh, they're just having fun and letting off steam. Then you have people who dress in very detailed and well constructed costumes and go out to charity events and act in a civilized and peaceful manner, often with the intention of raising $ or awareness for a cause - and what do people say? Oh, they're just nerds, ignore them and they'll go away.

    That always bugged me.

I can tell you how my husband roped me in. We had a 501st bar B Q at our house. A couple of the gals there were troopers. Then he took me trooping at Spkane Comic Con. There was a female Tie pilot and Jedi there and they had me partially convinced. They said hey no one can see who you are under the helmet. THEN

I SAW him troop it was like they were Rock Stars!!! the crowd all wanted pics with him and applauded. Now I am trying to devise a way to afford my own 501st costume.

Re: Golf clubs or Fett Blaster???

WOW .......I love reading the suggestion/input here so here is my .02

Here is mine I dont think it has been brought up.The cost verses "wow"/partical factor
Bertha Clubs price range between 599.99 to 799.99 (yes I am sure there are better deals ,theses prices are from Callaway.com)
MR Fett Blaster Replica prices are around $500 to $700 (just guessing could not find an exact price)
Ask yourself this about the clubs.....Are the clubs REALLY going to improve your game and how much golf do you play???Are they going to be more of a "Woow look at what he has!!!" by the other golfers???If a set of almost $800 clubs is needed ,is your "game" really that good???
Now ask yourself about "blaster"....Is it going to be a "A One" conversation piece in your house???Would you keep it in the garage or trunk of your car like the clubs would be???Does it have the potiental of increasing in value as a collector piece????Is it want you really want????Would it make you smile everythime you look or talk about it???
Aparently you are Blessed with not worrying about cost.So cost is not a factor. It seems to be a partical need question.
Even though your wife sees no partical need of the blaster but does she support your happiness??(no disrepsect intended)What is the worst to happen if you request the blaster over the clubs??A "roll of the eyes" with a sigh.I am guessing that in your marriage the happiness of one makes the other happy.
So I say get want YOU want!!!!!and if it is the blaster then atleast it will be a fun debate between you and wife for many years to come.If it is the clubs good luck on the course and be mindful of your follow threw.

Re: Golf clubs or Fett Blaster???

I am amazed at the great and VERY thoughtful responses. You folks have come up with some AMAZING and heartfelt responses (the biggest reason I love this site is "HEART"). Well, I am happy to say that my wife bought me the clubs, new bag and a round of golf at a place that you have to have millions or a high security clearance to play (she called in some favors) I could not be happier. Here is the deal with us.
No matter how strapped we are financially we always spoil each other on Birthdays and Fathers/Mothers day (Did I mention she got me an awesome stainless Grill? Now I am THE GRILL SGT) For Christmas we tend to make it more about the kids but we still try and give each other a few shockers that surprise each other (i.e. I had her Adrian Peterson jersey that she had him sign framed for her). But the way we function on each others birthdays is to buy the other person something that we would normally not buy for ourselves. Usually something excessive or extravagant that you would always say that you would love to have but in no way shape or form actually buy for yourself. That is where the clubs come in.
I am an Air Force reservest and about once every two years I go off to a 4 to 6 week school for something and this is MY time to play golf. I don't get too much time with three kids and a dog and all of the hassles of two jobs and my wifes demanding career to just jump up and run off for four hours on a weekend and not to mention the cost. So needless to say my golf game is average at best (low 90's) but I LOVE to play. So, when my wife bought me this set she knew that this may be something that she is interested in as well and that we can do together. She is a trooper and she is dressing as Leia for our annual halloween bash while I sweat my rear end off in Fett gear. What I am saying is that overall she supports what I do and wants to be more involved. On the other hand she knows for a fact that I will either make or purchase a blaster no matter what but the odds of me buying the clubs was between slim and none...and I think slim left town.

So thanks to my wife I will be tearing up a high price golf course with expensive clubs and still be just as frustrated as before but I will know that there was love in it. FORE!!!!

Hey man, I'm glad you got one of the things you wanted.

Bro, I'd get that MR Fett Rifle, and I'll tell you why.
    Because it's something YOU want
Just set aside a few bucks a day for it, and eventually you'll have enough, hell if you get a really big cookie jar and fill it with coins, in a years time you can generally get a good 200-300...depending on the size of the jar and how often you go to Starbucks

Just a side thought, but hey, I'm glad it worked out for you man

    Peace bro

Thanks Fitz!! Unfortunately my wife is an accountant and tracks every penny we spend (a good thing) The bad thing is that I am not allowed to carry cash so we use nothing but a debit card (which makes our banking really simple but keeps lose change from ever entering my grubbie little mits) Good thought though. I am sure that after we get the debt paid back down in a few months she will give me the green light to get what I want. We just need to be "thrifty" for now...

I'm just fantastic? so people don't mind the props.

honestly, every girlfriend i've had has been extremely interested in all my costumes and props. art in general really.

I don't go with the other girls, or I should say I don't call them back (they're boring)

nerds will always be cooler than everyone else, for real. we like awesome stuff.

Who would you rather be friends with? The guy in the stormtrooper costume dancing on the corner of National Ave. and Moorland Road? or the guy that is blowing you off slamming high lifes with his brosefs?

Buy your wife a costume and maybe she can get into it.

I have one word for ya..... "EWOKS"..... my wife resisted Star Wars for the longest time... until she found that it had stuffed animals in it!

But you're right.... at least you're not out in the bars or doing drugs! That's my wife's understanding too... she lets me have a little bit, each pay, to spend on the costuming... but the greater goal is to join the 501st... to do the fundraising part... because that's a very noble activity.

Glad it all worked out for you!! That is a very good point you made. You would buy yourself a blaster but wouldn't buy a set of clubs. With that in mind, I'd say the clubs were the way to go. Also if she like golf too, it can be a bonding activity for you two as well. Well, cheers and Happy Father's Day and Happy Birthday!!! Hope they all are the best!

This is a long thread and I could not read all of it ATM, but I have another idea. Take her to a troop, one that is a benefit for kids. Even being a wrangler at an event like that is such a life changing experience. It is fun to help people suit up and see the transformation. When you see the kids light up, and you see people donate money to a good cause, and see everyone having so much fun for a good cause, I am sure she will love to troop with you, and may want to suit up in time.

She sounds like a great lady! (definitely don't throw out the Baby with the bathwater, LOL ) The fundraising will surely be appreciated and the joyful children's faces, and she will warm up in time.

You all were right on in many aspects. After my birthday I had to attend a UN conference in NYC and my wonderful wife bought me Kotobukiya Fett statue from the Toys'r'Us in time square. I love it and the new clubs too. I am blessed. I hope to one day join the 501st and do some charity work but for now it is just plain old FUN putting it together!!! Cheers!!!

Sounds like you did alright after all Boomer Fett. My wife doesn't understand my nerdiness and my need for Star Wars, I have tried for years to convince her, but she will not turn to the Dark Side....hehe

It seems that the only thing that keeps her around is the fact that my nerdiness is not running in bars or doing drugs or womanizing...You know, the usual suspects. She is slowly warming up to it and starting to understand it better. I really do look forward to the chance to join the 501st and do some charity work. All I see every day is death, doom and destruction. It would be nice to see smiling faces on kids instead of the backs of their heads as they run from me...

I totally agree, and have brought the same facts to my wife's attention, but still to no avail.... ah well, what do I care as long as I enjoy it?

That would be cool, it would be quite a change from your line of work. Do you deal with homicide's alot? That would freak me out!

Appreciate what you do for your community.

Not much any more. The last one I had was that 4 year old boy who was backed over in his driveway by that illegal alien and killed last summer. I transferred to the School Unit last august.

I think emphasising the charity aspect of the trooping would be a good thing. Although I don't troop with the 501st I bring up the subject rather a lot with friends/family when discussion comes around to my SW helmets. Many of them scoff at the idea of people going around in costume, like a bunch of "nerds". But then when I explain that groups like the 501st do a lot of good things out there they suddenly look a little more accepting of the idea.
