Jan 19, 2012, 9:31 PM - George Lucas Announces His Upcoming Retirement #1

In an recent interview with the New York Times, George Lucas was promoting his "Red Tails" movie, when he announced his upcoming retirement from the Hollywood business. He will make one final "Indiana Jones" movie, and afterwards, he will retire from making movies & move away from the Hollywood business. (And no, he will not be making anymore new Star Wars movies.)

The new upcoming re-release of all 6 Star Wars episodes in 3-D may be the last time that all of the 6 Star Wars episodes will be shown in the theatres. (This may be it folks, so enjoy it while it still lasts.)

There's no word yet if Lucas will decide to close up shop on ILM or the Skywalker Ranch when he retires, or if someone else will take over the Star Wars & Indiana Jones franchise. (Or if the Star Wars & Indiana Jones saga will also end completely upon on his retirement.)

All I can say is, thank you, George Lucas for giving us Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Here's the article from the New York Times interview with George Lucas:

Thank god, he should have retired about 5-8 years ago.

Actually he has said that Clone Wars is still going to be on tv, and apparently the live action is still in the works. And I can't imagine ILM, skywalker sound, Lucasart. shutting down just because he retires. And you "really" think he's done? At one time didn't he say "No more star wars movies" look what happened to that.

Yes, The Clone Wars will continue on T.V., but it won't run indefinitely. (It is supposed to run until they get to the events of Episode III.) That series will eventually end. The producers of that show were very clear about that. Plus, Lucas is not going to retire until he completes the final Indiana Jones movie. (That means just a few more years, before he closes up shop.)

You may be not be able to imagine that he will shut down ILM or sell it to someone else, but ultimately, it's Lucas's call, whether to keep it, shut it down or to sell the entire company. (Remember, he did sell off Pixar to Disney.)

As for the The Live Action series, it is actually on hold, even though the scripts are finished according to Producer Rick McCallum. They had planned to do 50 episodes, but they can't do it right now, because it cost too much to produce 50 episodes, and they don't have enough money to currently pull it off.

You can hear Rick McCallum explain it, himself.

And you "really" think he's done? At one time didn't he say "No more star wars movies" look what happened to that.
Actually, his close associates & friends, as well as his family members have said that the retirement is really for real. When he said that he was considering breaking off from Star Wars, after Return of The Jedi ended, it was almost thirty years ago. He's 67 years old now, and he'll be 70 years old soon. It's obvious that he doesn't have the same stamina that he had before, and he has clearly said that he really wants to move on. You can be skeptical about it, but it's a fact of life that sometimes people do retire, after they reach a certain age. (Ultimately, it is Lucas's own decision as to when he should retire, and not have someone else dictate to him when he should retire.)

“I’m retiring, I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff

This seems to be saying that he is leaving, not necassarily selling or shutting down his companies. Let's face it why would he shut down companies that will continue to bring in millions for the rest of his life? Also wouldn't we be seeing a massive reduction in employment at said companies?

"Lucas said he would return to making lower budget films, much like when he was a student, rather then the big blockbusters he has become to be known for. Though, through all of this he still has a dream of producing a live-action Star Wars TV series that would go at least 100 episodes and still would like to revisit the Indiana Jones series with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford."

Again this would indicate that the studios are staying simply due to why hire others to do on your movies when you have your own companies to do? Also it also gives indication that he still wants to do that live action, on hold doesn't mean dead. And yes he did sell off pixar, but it was to finance more star wars movies.

Yes I am aware people retire, but it doesn't mean 100% that everything they created is going with them.

Disney and Lucas are two totally different situations. That would be like comparing apples and oranges. Disney's brother Roy Disney, and his nephew, Roy E. Disney also took over the family business when he passed away. Currently, there is no heir apparent to the Star Wars franchise, and Lucas has said that when he passes away, Star Wars will go with him. Lucas also has the final say with what to do with Lucasarts, because he owns the company. (Unless he decides to sell it when he retires.)

If he (And it's an "If") decides to sell the company, the employees wouldn't end up being unemployed. I'm sure they will be a long line of people who would want to buy ILM & Lucasarts, if Lucas really decides to sell it. (Perhaps Disney may decide to buy ILM, or 20th Century Fox.) And that money that he gets from the sale of the company can finance his own personal movies for quite a few lifetimes.

george has kids, one of them would probably take over eventually, and in the interim rick mccallum would probably run things.

He has been saying some version of this for almost 30 years now -- retiring to do "personal" films, but AFTER the next big project is done. Maybe this time its for real. I only wish it was BEFORE another Indiana Jones movie. Blast.

I'm not going to make any assumptions on his retirement. I like the Star Wars prequels, I like the latest Indiana Jones and I didn't even know that he's planning another, so... Yeah, I'm psyched
