Finally put my ROTJ SE together
After spending over two years putting my ROTJ SE together, with lots of breaks, losing and regaining interest, and a move from China to Sweden last year, leaving all my Boba stuff in boxes for some months, I finally got my act together and decided to finish this project.
I got myself a cheap mannequin, modified it a couple of nights ago, and put on all the pieces to see what it looked like. My wife freaked out seeing Fett in the living room the next morning (my son loved it though!) and I am not sure how long he will last. ;) He is not perfect, and likely has some inaccuracies but does the job of looking mean and intimidating!
My biggest thanks to DAZ for being a great guy with serious skills, providing many (most!) of my parts and his painting skills. :thumbsup Thanks also to 99centTaco, Batninja, Crazy4BobaFett, FettDad, Julie, Madmartigan, MoW, Omega Man, psberetta/serenity, RussRep, Sidewinder, Skygunbro, slave1pilot and TK409, who all offered parts or material in one way or another.
This site is a really cool place to be and has a lot of really talented people. Some of you have truly amazing costumes that I could only dream of owning! You've all been an inspiration and I've followed numerous threads these couple years, (but perhaps not as active in the discussions myself as I should've been).
Time to put away the tools, sewing machine, paints, fabrics and leftover material, at least until the family gets used to Fett and allows me to start my next project... Right, I still haven't painted the shin tools… and then there are upgrades.:b
Here are some snaps. Sorry about the poor quality. It was late at night and I was using a compact camera.

Looks great! It took people awhile to get used to my Tusken Raider being at the end of my hallway, after a couple screams in the middle of the night they felt right at home.

Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Costume aside, which looks really amazing by the way, can you show any photos of the mannequin you built/modified.
Im particularly intrigued by how the neck juts forward a little bit....it really looks like a fett pose. Most mannequins necks and heads just go straight up and with the costume on, the pose becomes kind of stagnant.
GJ again!

I had a really tough time dressing him, (especially getting the arms back in place after putting on the vest without being able to see the keyholes in the sockets :cry(I was sweating and cursing...), so I'm reluctant to take off the costume for now. Sorry about that!
But basically, what I did was I first got one of these cheap mannequins:
http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL453.../364424028.jpg
He looks nothing like Fett and is too skinny, but he has the right height, and by bulking him up (torso, hips, thighs, belly and buttocks) with latex foam and duct tape I got a decent body shape out of him. His arms were cut up, bent into shape and taped to get rid of that stupid pose. I also separated his legs some (don't get any funny ideas!)
Then I cut off his fingers and replaced them with cut up garden hose with some twisted piano wires inside. I added small pieces of latex foam before wrapping it all under a few layers of duct tape to get the right shape of the hand, and voila, posable hands/fingers!
Achieving the tilted neck was quite easy. I simply cut off the the back part of the skull on the mannequin, which made the helmet rest more towards the front of the head! Hope this helps.

Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Thats pretty clever, thanks!
But more specifically look at the shot you just posted (helmet off). Look how the actual neck, not the head leans forward. In other words the neck isn't on the same vertical axis as say, the skull on the shoulder.
Was that the way the manne neck already was or did you modify that also?

His head was a bit off axis to start with, which was further accentuated by putting foam on his back when bulking him up, and cutting off the back head.

Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Thanks a lot for your kind words! I'm really happy with the result too.
I've wanted to have my own Boba Fett since I was eight years in 1980. Now that I have him, I'm almost afraid I will get used to him too quickly, and the thrill will fade. And then what's next? I guess a lot of you guys have experienced this...

Finally put my ROTJ SE together - disaster strikes
A week ago, just after posting my latest note, disaster struck.
At 4 in the morning I woke up from the crashing sound of Fett falling face down, bouncing onto the coffee table and smashing to the floor. The helmet cracked at the corner of the visor, and just above the wavy brow, and the range finder broke off at the stalk. The jet pack took a good beating too, with one of the thrusters snapped off and the rocket cracked right off where it's the thinnest.
I was in total shock and probably cried a tear or two before finally calming down. :cryIn my excitement to get Fett dressed and ready, I had rushed things and overlooked to check how secure the mannequin was standing. Apparantly the feet, which are just stuck into the legs were starting to bend a little and the weight of the backpack and blaster somehow made the whole mannequin lose it's balance and.. smack!
I didn't do anything the first day, almost afraid to check out how bad the damage was. But over the last few days I've been fixing the damages and secured the feet to the legs with screws to avoid it from happening again.

The helmet cracked 3-4 cm along the wavy brow, leaving a hole about one cm wide. I found the main four pieces that broke off and glued them back in place, added filler around the rest and in between the worst cracks, and sanded it smooth, trying not to mess up too much of the paint outside the damage. Then I repainted the damaged area, looking at photos and trying to match the original colours as closely as I could.
The cracks in the corners were really not that visible, the fiber glass holds it together really well. (BM makes one sturdy helmet!) I settled with brushing some "Tamiya weathering master" into the thin cracks. In a way I was lucky and it could have been a lot worse.

Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Wow, sorry to hear about the accident. That's one beautiful display you have there. Hopefully you can piece it all back together just fine.
-
Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup
sounds like you did a good job on the fix!!! glad that it wasnt behond hope and repair!!! so sad to see a helmet go down like that...:cry
-
Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Woh!!! That is an amazing display!! That is heartbreaking that your mannequin fell over....I freaked when my helmet fell two feet and barely chipped. I can't even imagine what you are feeling!!!
-
Re: Finally put my ROTJ SE together
Thanks for cheering me up! Unless you know exactly where the helmet cracked, it's difficult to spot the repaired area. It still bothers me, but I can live with it. Fett is still alive.

BM did the paintjob on all his own parts, except the shin tools.

The stand is just the way it came with the mannequin (You can see it in the pic of the naked mannequin further up). I just made a print out on glossy photo paper of the Star Wars logo and 'Boba Fett' in yellow text on a black background. Nothing fancy, but looks OK I think.
