DUNE

It has been a few years, and my copy of DUNE was on VHS, and I no longer have a VCR, so I went looking for it on DVD.

I found it in a newer collectors edition. The extended version is an hour longer! The intro at the beginning is awesome. It goes much deeper into the history and backgrounds.

This movie hold up quite well. I loved it then, and I love it now. It's darker than Star Wars. Almost like Marylin Manson meets Tim Burton, meets Star Wars, and allows Gieger (creator of ALIEN) to build some of the sets!

It also has behind the scenes, model making, and costume design. They even discuss how they made the Stillsuits. I would love to make one of these. I wonder if Muad'Dib has one!

They also used forced perspective since there were no computers. One shot they made a small model of a ship with 100 soldiers all 1 inch tall standing in front of it. They put the model right in front of the camera and lined up the ramp to the ship with a hole in the model. Then they built the ramp full size a few hundred feet away and had the actors run down it, and because they were so far away they were the same size as the 1 inch model soldiers. RAD!!!

If any of you guys have not seen Dune, I highly recommend it.

The intro alone is worth it. They start like 4000 years before the movie occurs and give an in depth history with cool drawings and discussion that helps understand the workings of the universe people and political themes. Ive watched the extended version twice, and just watched the theatrical version today.
Interestingly, there were a few things in the theatrical version that were not in the extended. You would think it would be the other way around and it was since it was an hour longer. But why leave out the scene on Geidi Prime with the young peasant with the flowers. When he comes in behind Sting, and Vladamir Harkonnan flies over to him and pulls out his heart plug, allowing the young boys blood to splatter all over him! That scene is in the Theater version, but not the extended? hmm...

LOL! I was just messing with you, bro. Have you caught my screen name? ;)

I like the Extended version a lot but there are a few instances where they repeat footage of the Harkonnen fleet that bug me.
I miss the heart-plug scene being cut out, too.

I haven't see this in a loong while... I'll see if I can find it.... I thought Sting was pretty scary in it when I was a kid.

Didn't Sci-Fi Channel to a Dune mini series?

I'm a huge David Lynch fan. Me personally I enjoy the shorter version of the movie. The longer one was pieced together for TV, so people could understand the story better. You know why the sets look like they were designed by Giger? Because they were. Or at least he worked on a early production of the film (that was never made) and a lot of his concepts got carried over.

Duh...Muad'Dib, I didn't get the joke cuz I thought you just hadn't seen the extended cut like me. My bad, hahaha

Yea Saxecoburg, I meantioned Giger briefly. My friend has a Giger book that has all types of pics from the film, and some pics of him meeting for DUNE at Salvador Dali's house! It also talks a lot about the Harkonnen castle and workings, and how it is surrounded by feces and bones of the dead in huge piles.

I think there was a TV series, but I never saw it, sometimes the movie should be left alone in my opinion. The Star Wars movies for example! Everything you see in a film theoretically has a history, and by expanding that universe to a ratings driven consumer society usually ruins the story. It steals some mystery, and usually goes tangent away from some of the great detail that should hold true, not be warped to fit a story line designed to make ratings and money. Sorry, I just feel art should never be determined by money, but by thoughts, feelings, and life experience.

Were we talking about DUNE? Did I hijack my own thread?

...so I also noticed another scene they skipped in the extended film; When Vladamir has captured Lady Jessica, and he wanted to spit on her..just a little spit. It was a disturbing scene. Why do you think they would have that in the theatrical, but not the extended? Because the longer version was pieced for a TV release maybe?

No fair, this means that I now have to spend my hard earned cash on the extended version on DVD.

Fantastic film, but it does not live up to the books at all, they are far better.
