The Dented Helmet.

I just wanted to note the impact that you guys have made on my personal life. Alot of you may not understand the life of a Marine, or may have not given it any thought before. I go to work on base every day, and I do what I'm told to do all day long, from the time that I get there, to the time that I'm told to go home, and reminded to be 15 minutes early the next day. I delegate smaller duties to the junior Marines beneath me, but for the most part, I'm just following orders. I'm up at 5:45 in the morning, so I can have enough time to slug down some coffee and make it to work a little extra early. When I get there, there is no such thing as "busy work". There's WORK. And I work all day.
A Marine's personal life is secondary to his professional life, because a Marine is a Marine 24 hours a day. Before I met you guys, I came home at the end of the day, and did whatever came to mind to pass the time before I went to bed. Usually nothing consequential... a PS2 game, browsing the internet, experimenting in the kitchen, reading one of my many Stephen King or Star Wars: NJO books. I realized today, after a little over a month with you guys, that my afternoons are not "busy work" anymore. Your costume may be just a hobby to you, but I've realized that mine is much more to me. You guys have given me something to completely focus all of my creative juices on, new things to learn, a ton of goals to work toward. My wife has said that I seem to have more energy lately, that I'm not so tired when I get home from work anymore, because I'm looking forward to working on my project, posting new pictures and updates, reading about other member's projects, reading advice offered to me, offering advice that I myself have only just learned. A month ago, I had never touched bondo or fiberglass. I never would have imagined in my life that plastic For Sale signs could be turned into something so freaking cool as a Mandalorian helmet with a little cutting and some superglue.
I offer thanks to every one of you who have helped change my life. You guys are the best.
Cheers to all, and Merry Christmas.

I know where you're coming from Sam (personal experience), we've had that chat  And I think it's AWESOME that you look at it the way you do. Your post made me take a look back to when I was in, and going through the same .. and in retrospect, I would have KILLED to have had TDH to stir that up in me too. You are very fortunate to have that. What's even better, is you genuinely appreciate it !!!

Merry Christmas to you too !!

Hey Sam, from an Air Force guy with over 20 years of service, I hear ya!!
I've been into full scale props and costumes for several years now, and it's a really fun diversion from work. :)

It's always nice to hear about the good things TDH does! :D We're looking forward to seeing the progress on your costume and maybe even see it in person one day! :) *Ya gotta show it off! * And when you get done - you can make your wife a Zam costume!

Thank you also for your service... from the descendant of a Belleau Wood Marine. Semper Fi.

Sam -
First off, as so many have stated in here, thank you so much for your service!

For me Fett was my 5th SW costume and the most ambitious project I had attempted to tackle. Before that I did a TIE, Scout, Officer, and Jedi Knight. For the longest, Fett was, and still is, my favorite character. When I found this site, I started looking up all the info I could get my hands on because I wanted to be just like the fine men and women here! I wanted to be a Fett!

This site was and still is invaluable to me! I look forward to coming on here and looking at what others have done and helped push this hobby even further forward!

For me, Star Wars is more than a hobby. I've been a "fan" since I was 3, (now 34), and will never stop. What makes this group and others I belong to so special is that with this hobby, I can feel like I am making an impact in someones life! For example, when I did the Episode III premier in San Francisco, I was asked to take a picture with a child. Of course, I agreed. The parents bring their son over to me. He couldn't had been more than 10 years old, but confined to a wheel chair. I knelt down next to him and talked with him before we took the picture and for that moment.. for those maybe 5 minutes... he was a normal kid! I helped make him normal!

I know it's not the same, but it means a lot to me and I will not forget that expirence! I owe a lot to TDH and the 501st for letting me do things like that!
