    Mar 13, 2009, 3:14 AM - Couple of nagging BF questions #1

    Regarding his outfit...

    1. What purpose did his helmet RF actually serve? in the scene where he follows the 'Falcon after the garbage dump, we see his RF down to track it... wouldn't Slave One have on board radar to do that? And he uses a point of aim blaster with a scope, so I'm guessing it's not for shooting stuff unless his EE-3 scope was somehow wirelessly linked to the RF...

    2. His gauntlets... his right gauntlet houses the darts and the whipcord, but yet IMHO neither of these items require the attached hoses; his left gauntlet has the missile, and the flame thrower which you would think requires a means to supply the fuel, but yet there's no hose on that one...

Feel free to discuss, this is just stuff I think of at 3 in the morning...

Seeing as it is all make believe, the purpose of any part of the costume takes a back seat to the aesthetic. I think the only on-screen clue to the use of the RF is in Episode 2 when Jango Fett battles Obi Wan. At one point Jango is flying via the jet pack at Obi Wan, arm stretched out... in mid-air and without touching anything the RF comes down, then after a moment Jango fires from his gauntlet. The aim of the strike is dead on. This indicates it is at least used as a range finder for the armaments in the gauntlets.

And if you really think about it, wouldn't there be some advanced HUD on the face shield that could include any ranging data. Seems clunky to put it in some rotating rod that invariably bumps into door jambs, low ceilings and tight quarters. So yeah, thinking about these things in real world terms is prolly just going to lead to migraines.

In the books the RF provides a link to Slave I, he's landed the whole ship that way before. The darts I'd assume would need the hoses as they're pretty small and would need a ton of force to be able to shoot out and actually do any damage. The whipcord for sure would need it to fire for great length since the weight wouldn't be enough to carry it more than a few feet, especially if the wind was bad.

Well, lets look at this with some realism tied in with the non-real stuff.

What is a range find? Basically it's out-of-water sonar. It sends out an ultrasonic ping to an object, and uses the bounce back speed to measure distance to the object pinged. Now if we mesh that with a possible use in the Star Wars Universe, my guess is that the RF is linked into the helmet's internal targeting computer. The RF would probably feed in distance-to-target info as well as target proximity in relation to Boba/Jango. This is why he could use it in Slave 1 flying after the Flacon. Since his helmet links to the ship, then there is no reason to doubt that targeting info can't be shared between the helmet and slave 1's weapons control system. As mentioned above, Jango uses his RF to target Obi Wan before firing his lanyard at him on the Tipoca City landing pad.

Mandosoldier's explanation on the right gaunt sounds good enough for me. =)

Let's not forget that Jango used his RF when firing his concussion missile off his jet pack. ( I don't understand why it swung behind his head though !?! ) I've also heard stories that Boba used his RF to be able to "see" behind him. So I'd figure that it would be similar to a sensor for a 360 degree HUD.

Well supposedly the Mando helmets displayed a distorted 360 degree view so that a human could see completely around him. A few of the books reference this and the oddities of getting used to it. Secondarily, the helmets were supposed to use some sort of "blink-pattern recognition" to determine a lot of their automatic functions. I imagine use of the range-finder is on that list somewhere. Anyway, it just seems to be part of the targeting system. As pointed out earlier, Jango used it to target the missile on his jet pack.

But in reality? It's there because it looks cool and Boba Fett is the James Bond of Star Wars. He can never have too many gadgets.

I'm just guessing here so don't hit me with a hammer
What if the RF on the helmet also tracks eye movements for targeting? I'm sure it accommodates many other functions.

When Fett is tracking the falcon from the junk pile an argument could be made that, Knowing Fett the way we all do, he would have access to many of the same controls to Slave-1 from his helmet. With Fetts mind set he would probably access any and all system controls or data from the comfort of his helmet...you and I would not even have that helmet on at that point but Boba lives in it..

    My three centavos...

    Good points, Bro's...

Another one, I've seen pics of a hose attached to the back of the left gauntlet missile, any explanations?

So does Boba's helmet have a 360 degree view? It didn't seem like it in RotJ.
Unless he was just so focused on Luke he didn't notice Han, or just didn't consider him a threat since he was stumbling around blindly.

That sounds possible, maybe he just has to hold close one eye and it triggers the RF to come down.

those are all preproduction photos I have seen with that configuration. My guess is at some point they weren't sure anymore what that thing on the gauntlet was... maybe the idea of it being a missile temporarily fell out of favor for another idea. Perhaps someone got the idea that instead of being a missile it just shot noxious gases or fumes from the front holes or something. But my real guess is that no one had any idea what the missile was really supposed to be and just thought it would look really cool and uber-intimidating if it had a tube attached. I think they were right. Those tubes are kinda awesome, I don't care where they are going or coming from.
