Yep, bout bloody time to!
The logo is more TDH celebration!:D
Finally, cool!
Yeah. Another vacation....
Nooooooooooooo... too far away!!!! :wacko
I was really hoping for a closer venue, and the time of year makes it a toss up for me... either FanExpo in Toronto, or C5. Time to start saving I guess. :doh
Ack! Right in between SDCC and DragonCon!
Yeah, it's gonna be a pick-and-choose this year for some people this year.
Other than that I'm excited! Art, wait till you see the fan group application. I hope you don't have an outstanding FBI record. =P
Orlando? Maaan..:wacko hehe! J/K
Great to hear the announcement is out. :thumbsup:fettesb:thumbsup:jango
I am blowing off SDCC. This type of specific event doesn't come around too often :cheers:thumbsup
This is awesome that they finally decided to tell us when and where!!! :cheers
I wish that I could bring my wife and kids as well Arturo, but my wife is pretty sure that her side of the family is planning to bring her and the kids out west some time this summer to visit... so I'll more than likely be going to C5 solo. :cry:cry
I'm hoping that I can afford to bring my Jango, but as it sits right now, my tub is illegal as it's 1" or 2" square too big! I can onmly afford to go to one major con/event next year, and C5 fits the bill. I'd also love to finally meet the lot of you in person. :hug
AWESOME NEWS! Right in my backyard too!!! :cheering
Me and my wife will be coming. Her sister lives there and so it'll be nice to see them and go to wdw and celebration. Def. Excited.
Sounds good! Disneyworld and Star Wars. It doesn't get much better than that!
Darren:fettesb
I've heard horror stories of shipping being as much as or more than airfare... I seem to recall hearing tales of shipping fees upwards towards $300 to $500 dollars on over-sized tubs! :?
If I were to drive it, it would take me 2 to 3 days of all out driving to get to Orlando from Ottawa... airfare would be far cheaper considering todays gas prices. :doh
I'll just have to research the different airlines, and find out what the current limitations are for over-sized baggage. Hope they don't charge me into bankruptcy.
Well, going and coming from SDCC costs me $400 extra just to transport my gear on the plane. So I would say depending on how big your tub is, and how much weight you have in it, then your going to pay around $200-$400 just for that part of the trip.
How much do tickets usually cost for this?
:skull El1te
I shipped my costume the day before my arrival at Dragon Con in 2006. I sent it FED-Ex priority through my corporate account, it was about $400. I shipped back 5-Day Ground, at around $150. I personally prefer shipping than doing the TSA thing. I flew with my Bacara costume to Adcon for Jon and Rose's wedding in 2007 and I was charged a total of $350 and those TSA folks went through my entire bin, and dishelved the packing. I ended-up with a few busted parts.
Wao, that is a great news, from Puerto Rico to Orlando it is a 2 hours flight,:cheering I want to go with all my family so i need to make some extra cash.
About bloody time they made a decision! :doh
At this point I don't know if I'm going solo or with the family... finances are really tight right now - But I will be there! DC and SDCC were out of the picture anyway, I was hoping and praying they would make a decision on this, because CV was all I could afford this year.
well if i hadn't already bought plane tickets and booked my room for dc , i might have done this instead:doh
So excited! Nice, I hope I can my stuff together in order to go. It's possible to take luggage aboard but it always costs extra now.
My thoughts exactly! I’m already committed to DragonCon, there’s no way I could afford the time or money to do a major con with in a couple of weeks of that. Any other time and I would be there… I really think LFL has shot themselves in the foot on this deal. :(
Now I'm stressing about how I'm going to get my stuff there without it costing a fortune.
Thanks for the heads up guys!!! Ive booked
into the Springhill Suites by Marriott. 8840
Universal Boulevard Aug 11-16 Now I just
have to make sure I get the 4 day passes!
See you there guys.....Its going to be a fun
drive from Ontario Canada to Orlando.
Mike
I think they made their decision 4-6 months too late. Less than a year's notice isn't that cool on their part; I doubt I'll be going. Plus all of this new Star Wars isn't that great, the Clone Wars are unwatchable and I doubt the convention will be worth flying cross country for. Celebration 4 wasn't that great, and I'll stick to the other conventions.
I'm wodering if enough people in one area are going and want to bring costumes could pitch in and rent a uhaul and pay for a friend to drive it to Florida and then do the same back. If you get enough people it'd def be worth it.
Ha. I take that back. I just checked the price and it's really expensive for that.
I will be there from the 9th to the 16th. Spending a couple of days at Disney and then the remainder at the con. If you haven't booked a hotel yet, there are still some $50 rooms left, although most of the smaller hotels doubled their prices this morning (wonder why?)
I got permisson from the wife to go!:cheering
I'll actually be driving down the east coast with a friend and our kids. This way we'll share the driving and go down straight through. I've driven to FL before so it's not a big deal. By driving I hope to bring my ESB Boba too!:drool
Hopefully I'll get to meet some the TDH'ers. :cheers
Yeepeeee!!! I'm so excited, it's my first Celebration! Hey Maulfett, we're be doing "plane-pool" hahaha!
!!! Figures, I live less than 3 hrs from O-Town right now, but by Aug I'll be livin in Idaho (within driving distance of Vegas)! Mr Lucas hates me..... :(
Hopefully, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be open at Universal by then, so I can kill two birds with one stone. lol
This is great news indeed. However, I do wish that they gave at least a year's notice like the other previous Celebrations.
I also did have a few concerns though after reading their website...
In regards to the "Weapons Policy"...It seems that they gotten a lot stricter than the previous Celebrations.
Here's a listing of Their "Weapon Policy":
While I can understand about the safety issue in regards about bringing real weapons, I do have some questions about the part about the "Hard replica weapons" and the airsoft guns.Quote:
The following items are forbidden at Star Wars Celebration:
Functional firearms (including air soft guns, BB guns, cap guns, paintball guns, and pellet guns).
Functional projectile weapons (including blow guns, crossbows, long bows, silly string, slingshots, water balloons, and water guns).
Metal-bladed weapons (including axes, daggers, hatchets, knives, kunai, shuriken, swords, sword canes, and switch blades).
Explosives (including firecrackers and fireworks).
Chemical weapons (including mace and pepper spray).
Blunt weapons (including brass knuckles, clubs, and nunchaku).
Hard replica weapons (including most made of metal, fiberglass, and glass).
Whips.
Replica weapons will be allowed, providing that they are made of cardboard, foam, wood, or other lightweight materials. Replica firearms are allowed only if they cannot be mistaken for real weapons. The barrel of all replica firearms must be covered with a brightly-colored cap. Replica bows will be allowed providing all arrows have soft tips.
Aren't many of the Clone Troper/Stormtrooper, Mandalorian weapons and Jedi weapon props made of metal & fiberglass? Some are modified airsoft replicas of real weapons. Also, why are whips banned all of a sudden? Does that mean we will have to use plastic, foam and cardboard for the weapon props?
Hard replica weapons were not a issue in the past Celebrations, so I was kind of surprised to read this new weapon policy. The new organizers are the Pop Culture Group at Reed Exhibitions. (They are the same organizers for New York Comic Con, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, and the New York Anime Festival.)
I hope this is not going to end up like some of the other cons where they have a Draconian policy when it comes to weapon props.
You can check out their website here:

Yeah, that's a bit of a rub....
We were given MORE than a year's notice for this celebration.
Steve Sansweet confirmed C5 officially at San Diego Comic-Con back in July.
Hector
Steve Sansweet could not confirm a definite date & location for the Celebration 5 Convention, even as late as September 9, 2009 at DragonCon 2009. (He also could not confirm the actual dates & location at the July 2009 San Diego Comic Con Star Wars panel.) I was at the Star Wars panel at Dragon Con (Sitting about 20 feet away from him) when he mentioned that the location and dates still could not be confirmed. He has mentioned the possibility of a Star Wars Celebration 5 long before San Diego Comic Con but the dates & location could not be confirmed until a few days ago.Quote:

Yeah...that's completely not true. I was at both SDCC and DCon and at no time did Steve confirm anything other than there would at some time be a CV. If you asked him personally, the topic would change pretty quickly.
As to the weapons policy, yeah it looks a little harsh...but you can get around some of that. Usually, if you disable your airsoft guns they don't have a problem. I've never in 4 years been stopped over my pistols or knife, which are all metal. But I also follow my own set of rules for weapons carrying:
1. If your going to pull weapons, do it mainly with others in a group.
2. Don't make any movements that would make security think you are a threat.
3. If your carrying a carbine or rifle, keep it in a safety position (pointed at floor or resting on shoulder.).
4. If you carry knives, keep them in a sheath that can keep it secured. Also keep them where they are not easily noticed.
As long as you make security feel good around you, then you don't usually have a problem.
How much are tickets to CV? Anyone know yet? :) I am trying to see if people in the PA/NY area are going and maybe wanna caravan down. Provided I can afford it haha
:skull El1te
I've seen that they're $120 for a 4day pass...
EDIT: yeah...here they are:
Adult Four-Day Passes are $120
Saturday Passes are $50
Thursday, Friday, and Sunday Passes are $45
Kids Four-Day Passes are $50 and One-Day Passes are $25.
Holy cow.... O_O GDC is even cheaper than that. I don't think I can afford that :(
:skull El1te
El1te, if you change your mind about the caravan I know that a few of the PA Mercs clan are going to come down.
There is also the ability to volunteer as a "in-costume Volunteer". I'm not sure what all that opens up admission wise, you would need to check the application on the CV site.
Really? Now that is interesting... I'd probably take my TB down so I'd be in costume anyway. :)
:skull El1te
I'm heading down. Other cons are fun, but for anyone who loves Star Wars, the Celebrations are unmissable IMO. I'll hit up my normal cons the next year... for 2010, its C5 all the way! :)
NOOOOO.... another con just too far away.
Now that it's all settling in, I am bummed that the timing is off for alot of our fellow costumers :( I am/was/am hoping to see my favorite people, and I think LFL is out of touch with the core demographic. Those dates also fall into the prime remaining weeks of summer, wherein the regular general public plans weekend family events and barbeques and regional family vacations. I just came privy to an upcoming event in Hawaii for friends, that very weekend. They saw my post on Facebook and now I have to figure out how to skate around this, because I am going to CV or bust. Regular folks think this stuff is lame too, so I will undoubtly lose a "friend" over this one LOL. No matter when and where though, it's never going to be perfect timing for everyone.
About the passes to get in... I read that they will offer VIP passes? Any idea what that may include and what that may cost? Maybe some one who went to a previous Celebration may know?
I would like to get passes as soon as they are available online but if the cost for VIP is not bad I'd consider that.
Thanks!
I will be looking forward to seeing all my fellow fett heads at CV, The Florida Garrison will do it's best to be a gracious host.
See you all in AUG.
I am bringing my little Vode Redboy, we need to get them all rounded up for a shoot!
Honestly, LFL has to be thinking less about the people who go to other conventions and more about the people who just wait around for Celebrations. As much a presence as LFL and Star Wars are at places like SDCC and DragonCon, if they had those really in mind then they never would have scheduled a date that made people have to choose between one or the other.
It's all about the $$ in the end. :lol
Here in Arizona, school starts in early August ... (my local district starts August 9th) - so that doesn't bode well for families from this part of the country. I didn't realize that until today... :doh
People should realize that ANY date chosen is going to have conflicts.
Pick any time in June and it conflicts with graduations, Father's Day, and weddings.
Pick May and proms and final exams get in the way. Pick September and the majority of kids are back in school full-swing.
Pick July and SDCC, hot weather, and Fourth of July creep in.
So when is the right time exactly?
Hector
Late May-June would have been a good time, but that conflicts to much with Star Wars Weekends in Disney and they don't want to do that.
Irregardless, a little notice wouldve helped alot! And it almost seems like your posts are aimed at making the rest of us feel like whiners because LFL didnt take the time or courtesy to think out the logistics of this. Personally, I think its not only discourteous to the fans, but to the Dragon Con organizers, or for that matter, their own interests. It appears alot of SW fans are going to have to chose between one or the other.
Just wondering if anybody going to C5 may have a room for DragonCon, at the Marriott they aren’t going to use? I’ve been trying to get a room at the Marriott for weeks, with no luck. Just drop me a PM, so we don’t clog up this thread. :)
My posts are aimed to provide some context to all the complainers. If you organize an event of this scale to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of one of the most beloved films of all time, it's going to be big and people are going to complain because it's human nature.
That said, a lot of posts make it seem like George Lucas himself picked the dates, or that the organizers should have taken into consideration all these other conventions going on. That's just unrealistic.
People now know about SDCC, D-Con, and C5.
Make a choice and live with it. If you're one of the lucky few who can do all three, more power to you. If you can't, then make a choice.
But I hate the tone of posts that suggest that Lucasfilm is shooting itself in the foot, isn't considerate of its fans, or is all about greed. They are under no obligation to put on any kind of convention or celebration.
Believe me, this thing will be well-attended even with Dragon-Con and SDCC so close to the dates.
Hector
I guess your missing the point of my posts.
Point
LFL is also invested in these other conventions, not as much as CV but they are still very invested. It would seem to make more sense that LFL would want to spread it out a bit so that all these investments pay off to the fullest. Not that it really matters to the LFL bottom line, but money spent wisely makes a shiny penny. =)
/endpoint
Yep, people are going to complain. I think your going to find that everyone blames George reguardless because he is the face of LFL. Scheduling isn't what he does, that boils down to people like Mary Franklin (who is awesome), Steve Sansweet (also awesome) as well as a few more LFL employees. You also have to take into account openings in the convention center schedule as well as the organizing company.
There's a whole lot that goes into these, which is why it's called Celebration and also why they only come around every 2-3 years. Personally, I do wish it was more in the May/June area but as I stated earlier they have Star Wars Weekends during that time and I already knew those dates were going to be out of the question.
SDCC was out for me this year anyhow, just costs to much to go back to back to back. DCon barely costs me $500 for the whole weekend.
Personally, it wasnt what you stated, as much as how you stated it. If you dont like us whining, then dont read it. And dont tell a man whos organized troops and fire missions about logistical headaches for organizers who have 1 to 2 years time to iron out those kinks. You sound condescending and pompous. Not what I've come to know of TDH members. It almost seems as if you're needling those of us faced with a difficult decision.
It should have been May 25. Simple as that.
Me too Turo! This is why it IS a great idea for many of us with families because we can combine a geek trip with a family vacation to Disney World. :lol
As for the timing... look, not all of us could afford two big convention vacations in one year anyway. Regardless of whether CV was in May or August, I was only going to be able to afford one con. I'm chosing the one that's only held once every few years and that I can take my 11 year old daughter to.
Regardless of when and where it was it was always gonna be difficult for me (being all the ways over here in Scotland) but I don't mind. It'll be worth it when I get there and there's all those Fetts!!!
*swoons*
I haven't been this excited since I wandered innocently into the fett costuming panel at CIII
:lol
I'm 10 minutes away!!! Woohoo!!! All you TDH guys, get in touch. I'll be there all 4 days!
Also, I was hoping that they would roll the last weekend of SWW's into this so you all could make a week out of it...We'll see...
That will be pushing it back pretty far from the usual time frame though.
Well while I am not thrilled about the timing of it, quite frankly nothing would have been great for everyone. May would have been really short of a notice. I guess it is what it is. Looks like *big sigh* we are going to somehow try and go to all 3 of these cons (Comic Con, C5 and Dragon Con). We are already committed to D*con as Art's sister is getting married just a few hours away that weekend. We feel that we need to do a TDH table at C5 as it is our target audience. However, they mention that there may be a fee for fan club tables. That may make a difference. I am honestly shocked that they are even considering charging for fan club tables. And while we do have a fan club table for comic con, we may decide not to do it as we had a tough time filling spots last year and with C5 so close, it might be too much to do. But Art and I may go to Comic Con and help GotMaul and dgasser with promoting their company ANOVOS. All this, plus get married this year...we must be insane!
BTW Tom, I filled out the C5 fan club application today...did you think it was bad?
Wow! You guys have alot on your plate.
You aren't kidding!
About the timing of the celebration... It doesn't matter when to me. I could not make the last one because it was just too far away. It is closer to me now so I will go... but maybe the reason it's in August is because many other countries (especially in Europe) have August as everyones vacation time. Star Wars is a world wide phenomenon. I think we forget that. Anyway... its another part of the equation.
Definetely an angle I hadnt thought of....
The table. We got to have one. I am there on Monday the 9th, leaving the following Monday. Let's do it!
Funny!... yeah that's true... I completely forgot about Celebration Europe. And for East Asia there was Celebration Japan as well...
I know when Celebration IV happened I felt like I was missing out on something. I was just beginning my Boba Fett then. I watched the G4 television coverage of it and was bummed out. It was like a party was happening and I couln't go. So I feel for the people who can't make it for whatever reason.
I haven't even started filling it out yet. I think it's a little in-depth for a fan club table application...I mean providing references for people is more than I'm used to. :lol
As to why fan groups are going to have to pay for tables, I explained this to Art lastnight. Reed Exhibitions (the company hosting C5) does not have a fan table policy...period. Last year I was working on trying to get a combined TDH/Mercs table going on at NYCC, and the company that runs NYCC is also running CV. They wanted to charge us for a table at NYCC also, so I was able to talk them into "bartering" for a table. I had to watch a couple episodes of Little House on the Prairie to get a good idea of how to barter...but in the end I just said heck with it.
But yeah, I'm betting thats why we are getting charged. They have said it will be "affordable", but that's going to be different from club to club.
:cheeringOrdered my passes!:cheering
me and the pink mando are trying to make it to this. i mean, how often will this happen on the east coast right?! Plus I've never been before.
Looking for a place to stay? Not sure if there are any rooms left but one of the closer hotels left that didn't decide to price gouge once they heard that CV was coming!!! Good luck finding reasonable local places to stay...

check in on 8/12 check out on 8/15 so 3 nights for (44.99/nt + 12.5%) 151.86 total (incl. tax) for a single room with a queen bed, full kitchen, etc...
They also have access to their sister hotel right across the parking lot so you can use their pool and such for free. Pets are welcomed for a minimal charge as well. The I-Trolley does a pick up right at their front door too... It's within a short walk to the CC regardless.
Also, they have a room to hold your gear on Sunday when I check out so it won't have to boil in my car...
I still may cancel this if there is a main hotel with a similar price and/or I just decide to keep it cheap and commute from home but this isn't a bad deal at all. Cancellation is the day of by 6P.
They have 10 of these type rooms left as of now.
Thanks Zac for the heads up on this place.
Well, now I have to agree. The references part of the application was a bit silly. Yeah, Art didn't tell me about the "why we have to pay" part. It will be interesting to see what they wind up charging.
Tix bought! I hope the new Universal Harry Potter attraction will be fully complete (that'll be our 'other' thing to do in Orlando that week -other
then a drive out to the ocean). Now back to work on the many projects that need to fill my car to the roof for the drive down.
Mike
So what is the "promotion code" thing all about? I need to buy my tickets quick but don't want to miss out on anything cool or cheap.
Here is some new information about hotels that I thought all of you would like to know about. It was posted on the FL Garrison forums:

"Hard Replica Weapons"
Also see the footnote on the same page:
Quote:
We recognize that many Star Wars fans love to dress up as their favorite characters to express their fandom, and Star Wars Celebration isn’t trying to restrict replica weapons that are part of these costumes. Replica lightsabers, blasters, bowcasters, thermal detonators, gaffi sticks, etc. are all A OK, and you’re encouraged to come dressed as a Jedi, a Sith, a stormtrooper, a Mandalorian, or any other character in the Star Wars galaxy. If, however, you come with a replica of a real world weapon such as an AK-47 or M-16, our security are going to tap on the weapons policy and make sure your prop is clearly branded with an orange cap.
