501st Sticks it to Weinstein, 2 versions of FanBoys to be released!

Just to clarify, according to the legion "big wigs" ( PR officer etc) the 501st is behind NO protest or boycott.

Whilst some members of the 501st and other groups have spoken out against the Weinsteins (diabolical) treatment of this film , the 501st itself has distanced itself from any and all actions against them( thje Weinsteins). To this effect they even requested links to the 501st be removed from the protest organisers websites/Myspace pages.

yeah, the fact that so many people have been quick to slap a 501 on the thing is a bit scary. like carbonitekid said, there isn't any sort of "official" legion stance that i've heard of.

I will clarify that it is not all the 501st in my op, thank you for the clarification from the inside. I don't yet have a complete canon costume so have not joined my garrison yet.

i think it's probably safe to say that a LOT of legion members think the changes are dumb, but hey... i'm just a grunt!

lol. I dont think anyone outside of the star wars community really would be bothered either way about their stance, but theres no harm in clarifying.

Personally I don't really care which version hits theatres since. even before the announcement, we all knew that we'd get to see both cuts on dvd. I mean... what company would not put deleted scenes on their discs?

I think the original screenplay had a group of friends making a trip to CA to try to get their hands on a copy of Episode One before its release, because one of them had cancer and wouldn't live till the premiere.

The production company decided this was too "depressing" and changed this key plot point. So that upset a lot of fans.

I think they should have stuck to the original story, myself.

Although I haven't seen the film, I'd think removing the "cancer" element makes the fans into jerks or just plain greedy.

I think it only seems like that now, because we all know about the whole cancer thing... I mean personally, when I saw the trailer for the first time I thought it would be awesome. There was no mention of cancer or anything else... it just looked like a fun little flick. Not saying which version will be better... but come on... it's a movie just have fun

most 501st members knew about the cancer plot the whole time, and a lot of members actually helped and were extras in the movie to help move along a GREAT movie

its not the same movie anymore to a lot of us. now its being dumbed / watered down to a movie that makes us look like van wilder/roadtrip morons. It lost heart.

While not endorsed by any group a lot of members of both RL and 501st and some fanforce members also have kinda decided, for personal reasons, to boycott the theatrical release of the film unless its released in its original form.

The DVD move by the studio means nothing, as they already planned to do so. Its not good enough to me , personally. I wont pay to see something that the studio butchered. I feel for the filmmakers as they are kinda stuck

When Danny and I went to see the screener in Burbank we weren't expecting to see any epic moving deep film. We were expecting a fun laugh out loud flick. Granted somethings were a bit Lampoon'ie about it. But there was some funny cameos and bits. Danny and I gave the movie afterwards raving reviews in the survey we had to fill out. In fact probably the whole lot of us did cause the whole theater was blaring with laughter the entire time.
The fact of the matter is if you have a studio produce your film this is what is going to happen. They are going to make it into something that will make profit. And by fans boycotting this film they are just giving the film free PR. People who have no interest in seeing it is going to see it and see what the frak it is all about. In fact Weinstein is probably loving all this.
Next time someone wants to make a heartfelt Star Wars geeky film they are going to have to make an independent one and have it shown at Sundance. Cause it's obvious the studio doesn't want to just make this movie for the fans. They want to make it so people bring their non Star Wars friends back to see it.

yeah, it wasnt exactly the idea to get it well known there was a boycott, though some people decided to go running their mouths lol

so yeah, now it will probably make a lot more money because of it :/

Cailieg I don't think Wolfie was referring to you when she posted that some people decided to go running their mouths Pretty sure she was talking about press like the Hollywood Reporter/media and such.

Personally - I know people that worked on it (my best friend is in the trailer several times) and don't really care if they changed the plot, I wasn't going to see it before. Yeah it sucks but meh... now I have a desire to see it because I always try to go to boycotted movies.

The 501st Legion is not involved as an organization in any protests, boycotts, or movements related to the film Fanboys, nor do we have an opinion or position on the film (which has not yet been released). A few of our more than 4,000 members in 47 countries participated in the project, and accordingly may have their personal opinions about the current issues surrounding the project. But their participation in this film was not coordinated through or sanctioned by the Legion. Our organization is an all-volunteer costuming club that focuses on official Star Wars promotions and charity work. Mounting protests is counter to the Legion's mission and would detract from the time and energy that we currently devote to more meaningful causes.
