Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread NOW MORE UPDATE-IER!
Just thought I would post up a few pics of my progress and see what everybody (anybody?) thinks. Here goes...

The plastic was a Freebie! An old sign from work. I have been using superglue to tack pieces in place and then I would lay down a thick bead of Goop Glue on the insode seam. The Goop seems to react somewhat to the printing on the sign and make a crazy strong bond with no roughening up of the plastic at all.
I am a lttle further than this right now...starting to putty some of the lines. The last pic has had the top hastily "painted" with MS Paint to make it look a little more like the other plastic.
Also the right fuel tank has been replaced so that it looks just like the left one. The 2 inch PVC just wasn't working out to the right dimensions. I found some Finch feeders that were perfect at Meijer's. Just had to pop off the top and pop out the bottom and fill them with expanding foam to make them sturdy.
I'll keep updating this as I go, but I seem to keep jumping from one part of this suit to another as I start to lose interest in one area and gain interest in another. I always go back to one area, though... (sooner or later)
Lemme know what you think!!!

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Whoa ... that jet pack has words on it!!!!!!
Very nice job there! Got two questions for ya:
1) How heavy is it so far? (I've asked this question of quite a few people now for statistical reasons.)
2) How tall is it (from bottom to top?)

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Looking great sofar!! :thumbsup :jet pack :thumbsup Keep us posted please!!

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Got the bottom vent done (Modified vent from SingleSeat's laser cut pieces(shortened the fins a little)). Couldn't get the plastic to bend to the right shapes for the hole in the bottom, so I used several pieces of plastic to make the inner walls then used putty to hide the seams. Then I poured a small amount of resin in the bottom to give it strength.

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
"You've come a long way, baby!"
Here is how my pack looks now. I still like to sit back and look at it and just think about all the work put in to get to this point. Still a lot to go, though!

Man I love scratch builds!

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Here it is with the center part primed and just a couple of very minor fills left. Next I will start work on bondo and putty work on the side tank housings. I still dont have the center column actually attached yet as I will wait until I have the upper tank part finished.

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Latest update...
Got the left side tank housing bondo and putty work done except at the bottom where the tank cap will go. I have to wait until November to make the caps and rocket. That's the soonest I can get access to a lathe :( unless I break down and buy one for myself :) . Here ya go...

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
That does look sweet, man!
Couple of quick questions:
1) Is the back (the side that touches your back) curved at all?
2) Is the center filled with anyhting? I know you said you filled the tanks with foam. Just curious if you're filling the rest.
3) How much does it weight so far?
Keep up the good work!

1) Yes... It is curved on both the x and y axis. So it conforms nicely to the shape of a back (or backplate:) )
2) The only thing filling the center is the pvc pipe for the center tank. Other than that it is pretty hollow. I used some steel bar GOOP'd to the long flat pieces of plastic so that they would keep their straightness.
3) According to the bathroom scale the total weight as of now is 6 pounds. This includes the upper tank piece which as of right now is still a solid piece of resin. As you can see I have done some initial marks for the placement of the "teeth" or "keys"...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...l/DSC01610.jpg
I used a planters peanut can as a mold for this.
Step by step...
- Buy Peanuts
- Enjoy peanuts
- Wash out empty can
- Set can on top of the "top deck" of the jet pack
- Place a pen on the top part of the jet pack backplate
- Rotate can fully making a line around the can
- Mix Resin
- Pour resin to line
- Let cure
- Wish that you had more peanuts while resin kicks
- Tear apart can and remove resin block
If you do it this way you may want to use some type of mold release before pouring in the resin or the wax lining of the can will stick to the resin. I had to sand quite a bit to get it all off. I puttied up the seam of the can and sanded it smooth.
I have now decided that I need to go to the grocery store and buy some peanuts :)

I pretty much did that as tests on my jet pack kit :)

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread :)
Well after several years away from Boba I decided to do some more, lol.
I finally got the gumption to try my hand at the rocket with a lathe. Not done yet and it will probably be a few weeks before I'm at the lathe again, but I thought I would post progress so far and see what everybody thinks.

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread NEW UPDATE YEARS LATER!
LOL
Glad to see you back at it again. I took have taken some years off of Fett doing other costume projects. I stumbled across another jet pack build thread, and it's gotten the itch going again. You guys make scratch builds look so enjoyable!

Re: Yes...another scratchbuilt jetpack thread NEW UPDATE YEARS LATER!
