Wookie Scalps homemade

alright, you guys are probably tired of me posting pics up, but just really want to know what you think of my work so far...i have been working quite a bit on stuff, and just want to get your opinions on what i have completed and what i am still working on...here are my wookie scalps, made from curtain trim bought at a hobby lobby store...the trim was made out of weaving the material in 2 strands, so i undid them, and combined three to get the braid....not 100 percent on the colors, but i did put alot of time into them, and pretty pleased with the way they came out....(y)

arrgh!! hey Darrell, don't mean to sound harsh my friend but you'd be better off going down to your local Beauty Supply and picking up some "Yaki" hair. in comes in different colors, you just braid it yourself. I'll get a picture of mine to you tonight bro. those are not bad for home made and for Fett's on a budget though.

hey Ben, is it because they dont look right? color? or just better to go with the real hair? or D.) all of the above....?

Ben gave me the tip a while back and it made a big difference compared to the doll hair from Michael's I was originally using.

how much does stuff like that cost? are you talking about hair from wigs or something to that effect? which i did think about, but figured that someone else could probably use that wig more that a fett 'tume...;)

the issue is that the ends are very "bushy", where the fett ones aren't.

the yaki braid stuff is the fake hair used for weaves/extensions. it's pretty cheap... usually a couple bucks for a big pack. it's about 4' long, so plenty to make the braids out of.

i didn't make my braids, but if i had, that's the route i'd have taken.

if you have access to it somewhere, horse hair works much better... velcro sticks to the yaki stuff WAY too much.

also, if you have pets, be REALLY careful about the fake hair... it's not digestible, and can cause intestinal blockages / perforation. one of my cats ate some thread (same problem), and it was a $4K vet bill.

dang brian, you could have bought me a whole fett 'ume and still had $$$ left over from that vet bill!!! i know what you guys mean about the bushyness...is michaels the only place to get it?

I was planning on making mine from real horsehair, my father and brother are breeders so plenty of horse tails to steal from (a little bit here and there).
It does like a wee bit fake, would be better off using crepe wool strands than them (available at most beauty/makeup stores).

heh... i only wish i could have bought my whole suit for that... i'm long since past that marker ;)

the best part is that i only had the cat for a couple of weeks! it's been over a year and we've just paid him off recently.

most beauty supply places should have it. i don't know what chains you have in your area, but we have sally beauty supply here which has it, but is more expensive ($5 a pack or so). there's a local place i have gotten it at for other projects where it's only $1 a pack.

they'll certainly do the job as-is for now though. you may also be able to tame the bushy ends a bit by trimming them and/or using something like a hair wax to style them.

thanks for the help guys!! i will work on them a little bit and post a few more pics to see whatcha think...i have looked at some more ref pics, so i have a better idea of what they are supposed to look like...(y)
