WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread (updated)

It's currently only one pic of my test fitting my ESB build this weekend (snapping photos by yourself is more challenging than one would think), but I wanted to share and get any feedback. It's only partial at the moment and there are clearly things missing (as well as needing to swap the order of the ammo and girth belts).

    Parts:

    • Armor is Bobamaker, paint by slave1pilot
    • Gaunts: FettPride (built/paint by me)
    • ESB flightsuit: arkady (I did an extra dye pass as well as weathering)
    • Vest: Ladysewforus (also weathered)
    • Rifle: Stormrider (build/paint by me - previous thread here)
    • Girth belt: woodman
    • Ammo belt: BooBoo Fett
    • Obviously not done, but to mention, helmet is FPH Premium - just fitted the servo and will begin painting this weekend.

I won't have it ready in time for Celebration unfortunately, but hopefully my first troop planned in Sept. More pics as I build it up (and can get someone to take pics).

    Thanks for looking!

Its looking good so far, Id lower the girth belt a bit, there should be a space between the flack vest/ chest armor and where the belts start. But it looks like you've got a good kit going, keep it up!

    Looking Great!
For the ammo belt and gauntlets, did you PM the sellers asking for the stuff?
I want to see that helmet, when finished.

Thanks guys! And yep, Armydad - I see it too; more space between vest and belts (I need to adjust the bottom hem of the vest as well).

More pix as I have to share!

Not so much an update, as a posting of my flightsuit's dye-color and weathering. There's still some detailing to do, but overall I think it's coming together. As before, any feedback is welcome.

Re: WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread

This update most likely belongs in the Helmet section, but given its a part of my overall build, I thought to post it here as part of my progress - a comparison shot of my lid to the ESB hero. Been working pretty regularly on this FP Prem for the better part of a month (longer if you include the spot work here and there). There's still a fair amount of weathering and detail to do (airbrushing the scorch on the dent, tape marks under the kill stripes, as well as other detailing), but it's getting there.

This is my first helmet paintup, so LOTS of learning along the way (and room for improvement for the second one). I'll probably post a proper build thread for the helmet once I get closer to complete (hopefully this weekend).

First time on the helmet? Unreal. That's a beautiful paint up. That helmet along with your suit, can we get a pic?

Re: WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread

Wow! That paint job is a real beauty! Comparing the real helmet to yours, there's not too much to comment: the paint spot on the left upper mandible (near the physical gasp) should be a pronounced red against the base color red (yours looks somewhere in the pink area) and the other thing is the 'DV:' symbol on the right side lower ear, which is a bit too big comparing to the ear's size. But I can't wait to see images with each side of your helmet and if the rest of the paint job looks like that, I'm sure you'll get all the respect you deserve.

    Keep up the great work!

Did you have weathering your vest. It looks pretty cool and dirty on your pictures.
I need to weather mine and would be very grateful for tips.

Your helmet looks amazing. This is going to be a killer suit once it's all together.

Re: WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread

Thanks, brothers! TBH, while I think this photo shows it off well enough, I think upon closer inspection (aka better photos) you'll notice its very much a first attempt. And yeah, it's definitely been a path of learning, cussing, fixing, learning, cussing some more, fixing some more, etc. In terms of the painting, I have a background in design (and utilizing some of that here), but it's been years since I've touched an airbrush, so a lot of this is new knowledge.

RafalFett: I color shifted the pic very slightly to match the processing of the ESB photo, and I think it affected that red a bit. And yep, the "DV" is definitely larger than it should be. I think what happened is I measured the length of that section of the ear in the AOSW reference photos and then scaled the art as a whole to match the same length of the ear of my lid. Unfortunately, I've taken the route of painting all my decals on (in place of the actual letraset) and didn't really recognize it until it was fully in place. As a result, it'll take a little bit of work to strip & re-do. I'll post more photos once its complete.

Fekali: Yes, I spent a good amount of time weathering the vest and flightsuit. I think its the one set of pieces that sometimes aren't weathered enough and as a result, there's a missing continuity throughout the suit. As far as tips, I've basically been using a mix of black acrylic paint & water (about 1:6-7 - with a small bit of brown) in a spray bottle to provide the base weathering and then using a sponge brush of the same mixture for more specific weathering. Once done, I plan to "lock it in" with a light acrylic clearcoat.

The whole set of forums and then meeting folks at CVI has been pretty inspiring. Still, more to do before it's all done. I've been taking a few pix along the way, hope to post more as I complete more.

Re: WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread

    Slowly-but-surely update:

Began paintup of the jetpack over the weekend - it's a bit further along than this at this point, but still in progress (I've since added the black scorch marks around the exposed metal areas) . I'm attempting to mirror the film version fairly closely, but deviating a bit here and there (for instance, I'm darkening the point where the nozzles meet the jetpack). I know this makes it less than film accurate, but aesthetically looks better, IMO.

The painting approach is entirely topical -- I followed Spidey's jetpack thread for a metric ton of inspiration.

Things I still need to do -- red on nozzles, silver highlights on keys and other parts, decal and a few more layers of general weathering (missle, nozzles, etc.).

WIP: Roninson ESB Boba build thread (updated)

Took some pics of my ESB build from over the weekend. I didn't get all the pics I wanted, but these were enough to tell me what adjustments are needed.

Also worth mentioning, I live in a pretty small place (thus my relative size to the door I'm standing in front of - I'm not that tall ).

And some Halloween day ones (sidearm is attached to the ammo belt on these - thus the sliding of the belt to one side):

For my "needs improvement" list are:

    - Thigh pouches should be smaller/raised up
    - Slack taken up in the gauntlet hose
    - Additional weathering on the flightsuit
    - Need chin skirt still
    - Further dyeing of cape (to be made darker)
    - Take in vest shoulders slightly

Any additional feedback on the build or adjustments would be welcome.

    Thanks!

Great looking Boba. One of the best I've seen. For 5'8 when your standing next to the door you sure look a lot taller hah.

That is a beautiful suit brother! One of the things I really think you nailed, is making sure everything fits correctly. It all looks spot on together, and I think it is one of the best suits around. Fantastic work m'man! :-)
