WIP: Corrose's BM Bucket Paintup

Corrose

Active Hunter
Ok, so the title is a little deceiving, I actually finished this bucket but I wanted to post about it in WIP format. The reason I did this is that this is my first paintup and I didn't know if it would take me 1 month or 3. I didn't want to have a thread active that I didn't know if I was even going to be able to finish in a timely manner. My goal is to post the entire thread throughout today and maybe have it all done by tonight.

First off I want to say that prior to starting this project I actually shopped around to have it painted within TDH. Not because I couldn't do it, but I didn't think I'd have time. My wedding is in November and that was eating up my time. While I got replies from some really great artists who were going to charge very reasonable prices, I finally decided to just MAKE time and do it solo. I want to single out Eric (Superjedi). Along my journey there were a couple of questions he was eager to answer for me. He is a true artist and a very helpful guy. Some members guard their info like it's pentagon launch codes. Eric didn't so I want to say thank you again before I start the thread.

FYI this is for a ROTJ SE Helmet based on C4 shots.
Also the only area I did layered was the back concrete/RLM, the rest is topical

What we have here for a canvas is one of Bobamaker's fine lids. I don't have to say what a piece of art it is in itself without paint, but I will. I enjoy everything about this bucket from the detailing to the light weight of it. I eventually want to own a FP also and maybe that will be my next paintup.

All feedback is welcome.
So on with the info and pics.

What we have to start off with is nothing much, I used the Lowe's store brand primer for this project. I have always liked how it dries evenly and quickly.

Next I have masked off and airbrushed the Concrete onto the back panels.

Progress02.jpg

After that I have masked the bucket off and prepped it for the POG.

The next steps were the masking of the back panels.
I carefully drew the outlines of the damage base on top of the concrete.
Then I used liquid masking fluid to carefully mask the back panels off.

Progress07.jpg

After allowing the fluid to dry completely I airbrushed on the RLM onto both back panels and allowed that to dry. Suprisingly the Polly Scale paints dry REALLY fast!

I then removed the masking fluid to reveal the damage.
At this stage there were some pencil lines that the masking didnt quite cover so I started here doing some work erasing the leftover pencil marks.

The next step was to mask off the lower cheeks in preparation for the upper cheeks to bet brunswicked (as I started calling it).

A few of the photos along the way turned out bad so I can't show it completely masked to be brusnwicked. Basically what I did here was carefully tape off these areas to where there were no wrinkles in the tape and it was all smooth.

I then carefully hand-cut the excess tape off with a fresh exacto blade.

The shots showing the lower cheeks painted turned out too fuzzy, so we skip next to the masking around the mandibles.

Here's a shot of the Floquil Caboose applied.
Now at this point I need to stress how nuts this made me.

After it dried I kind of just...well, stared at it for awhile. The color looked wrong. I looked at it some more, still looked wrong. I decided to put it away for 2-3 days then look at it with fresh eyes. Fast forward and Im looking at it again, still looks too dark.

At this point I'm contemplating sanding off the red and trying another color.
I struggle with that decision awhile then decide that maybe it's the lighting, maybe it looks lighter when the silver is there. I REALLY wanted to redo the red but had to resist.

I was convince I had done something wrong but decided to move forward. I'll be sure to call out at what point I realized it was right.

In the photo it looks okay, in person I wasn't convinced.

So if you can't tell already my work on this from here out will be all over the board. Instead of doing the base coat for the ears or even the killstripes, I started detailing on the mandibles.

Progress13.jpg

Staying in the spirit of jumping all over the place, I continued the detail work to the mands, started on some various scratches on the forehead area and tackled the cat-scratch.

Next was the dent area. This was really fun!
After adding the base colors and letting them dry I did a couple of things:
I took some ashy/charcoal colored pastel shavings and did some initial "carbon scoring" inside the dent area, sealed that and did some color variation shading inside the dent using a couple of different tints of the bright silver paint.

I wanted to really create some color variance here and enhance the raised and recessed areas inside the dent.

Progress18.jpg

Next I had to earn my stripes!

I drew and cut out stencils onto an airbrush frisket sheet

Progress20.jpg

For the stripes themselves I didn't want a straight color of Reefer Yellow.
After I laid down the base Reefer, I mixed in a little orange and gradiated the back half.

Also started detailing damage around the stripes, then moved onto starting the damage on the back panels.

Believe it or not, it wasn't until around this time did I realize the red on the mandibles was right!

Flats for the ears, and yes I know I waste a lot of painters tape :)
At this point I couldn't have overspray ruining my progress (y)

Took a couple of evenings after work but the back panels getting close to being done then I hopped up to the back of the dome to start some scratches.

Progress27.jpg

Progress28.jpg

Back to the scratch.
I did a build up of layers with pastel shavings using charcoal color and a tiny bit of brown to create the streaks coming off of the dent.

While I had the pastels out, I did about 4 layers of dusting (grays, browns, black) to the lower cheeks.

Progress29.jpg

Progress30.jpg

Started and finished the black weathering around the dent, the little flecks.
I used Polly Scale black watered down 50% to make this damage look right.

Also started the base damage on the left ear.

Progress31.jpg

Made my own stencils for the white art on the earpiece and the symbol inside of it and airbrushed those on.
I refused to use decals anywhere on this bucket, so making all those symbols was tough!

I also did some light overall splattering of Polly Scale Earth watered down to 50%.

Progress32.jpg

Progress33.jpg

Also I decided at this point the recommended red for the chips on the left ear weren't doing it for me.
I experimented with colors and fell in love with "Blood Red" by Citadel.

The greasy back and side stains with tips on applying thanks to Superjedi.

The final shots!
Right ear finished with stencils cut for the details, and a little more PS Earth misting with a tiny bit of watered down black misted.
