WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Here's a set of fibreglass gaunts I got off ebay a while back. They need some work but they'll do to begin with.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1041.jpg
Here's the armour I'm building out of Aluminium:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...r/DSCF0428.jpg
My Bobamaker helmet that arrived today:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...ved21Jan11.jpg
and I've started prepping it for a layered paintjob, first by painting it silver:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...edsilver04.jpg
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...edsilver03.jpg
I'm waiting on my soft parts from LSFU but I'm certainly on my way.
Feel free to jump in and offer advice at anytime.

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Most of em call it aluminum mate. ;)
It's cool that we're building our Fetts together.
Mine the awesome ESB one and yours the technicoloured court jester. LOL
(I kid. I kid. )
Whatever help you need I'm there buddy.

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Hey mate thats a nice start you got their, you cant go wrong with a BM lid.
As soon as I saw this thread I knew those gauntlets instantly, because I had the same ones. They are a lot of work, but they can come out really nice when done up. I would first recommend a new rocket and flamer unit. Take a look at my thread if you get stuck on them, I got a WIP with them in from start to almost finish. The main problem you may have is that they wont align up when you trim them for your arms, what I did was heat it up with a hair dryer, gently bend them then placed them in a bowl of cold water still holding the shape, did this about 4-5 times and they came out nice.

If you need any help feel free to ask, im also in the progress of a lid paintup if you need any advice on that, although there are some much better artists out there :P

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Welsh, you're gauntlets came out fantastically! Thanks very much for letting me know about them, you really do have a great set of progress pics in there. Thanks also for the advice, it is much appreciated.
As for you TrooperDyl.....why I oughta.....:lol
Thanks for the posts...

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Lookin Great Man!! Best of Luck...Its hard waiting for it to be done, but once you finish you realize how much you miss working on it....That's when its time to start upgrades!! Enjoy the build!!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I'm making the same aluminum armor right now as well. I cant wait to see how yours turns out.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
That aluminum looks pretty neat! Good job with it!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I'm really liking that aluminum armor looking forward to seeing more progress pics
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I've had a bash at the armour with my ball-pein hammer and also had a quick go at layered paint. Bear in mind that while it is a gloss finish now, I'll fix that up later

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
As promised, a more detailed post of technique:
Here is the left chest piece with latex applied to mask the areas where the bare metal will show through:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...chestpiece.jpg
The latex was simply applied with a brush in the approximate areas that I could see on reference pics where the bare metal shows through on Boba's outfit.
This is the latex I bought from 'Fibreglass Material Services' here in Newcastle. I used the same stuff to make my Gamorrean guard mask.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...aintlayers.jpg
Here are the two chest pieces side by side. The latex is much thicker on the piece on the right, because I discovered on the ab plate that the thin bits can be more difficult to remove.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...nundercoat.jpg
And here are the two cans of paint I bought from Bunnings to do the colours. They are very cheap but to my eye match the armour near enough. That may change of course.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x.../Spraycans.jpg
Here's a pic showing me peeling off the latex:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...ffthelatex.jpg
But I think I over-weathered the chest. There is way more paint missing than on the screen Boba. Just goes to show I shouldn't do things by eye:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...weathering.jpg
It's a good thing this paint is so cheap. I can start all over again ;D
I've removed the gloss from the ab plate by giving it a quick go over with wet-and-dry sandpaper (wet).
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...omoreshiny.jpg
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Here's what I did today.
Using Photoshop, I stretched and manipulated pics of Boba's actual armour and overlaid them onto the templates that I used to make mine.
Then I printed them out and cut out the pieces that I needed to mask. First the bits where there is no paint showing at all:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...extemplate.jpg
Then, using an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment, I took the paint off the armour:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...rushedback.jpg
I taped the templates over the armour and brushed the latex through the stencils:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...texapplied.jpg
I then used the same process to paint the yellow underpaint, cut the stencils again to remove the yellow parts, again applied the latex through the stencil and painted them up again:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x.../2ndeffort.jpg
I think they look alot better than before and I have now placed the three little dimples in the ab plate.
I used different green paint this time around. The ab plate actually has two shades but for the top coat, I sprayed my new green (which is lighter than the last) and then gave it a mist of the lighter green over the top of it all.
It needs more weathering and grime but that can come later.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Looking much better! I'd also recommend misting it with darker colours to tone down the green a tad, also hit it with a matte finish to get rid of the sheen.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks. I will be distressing it more soon.
Here's my first attempt at shoulders:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1241.jpg
The paint spatter doesn't look as bad as I thought it might. I'll put some scorch-marks on later and see what I think.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I was advised on another forum that his right shoulder is meant to have dents.....
So....
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...Bill/Dents.jpg
I'm also fixing up the paint on the chest armour. More to follow.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
keep it up all the details make the suit!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Yo Bill looking good buddy!
I need to get back into my build soon
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
The first weathering was a little heavy but I think you've got it now, looks really good!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks everybody.
I have had a go at making some scorch-marks on the armour. It isn't necessarily screen-accurate but I think it looks alright.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...orchmarks2.jpg
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...orchmarks3.jpg
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
What did you use for the scorch marks? I like the depth it gives to the dents and scratches.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I used a very light wash of kid's acrylic paints. I mixed up some green, red, yellow ochre and black to get a nice grimey look. One drop of dishwashing liquid in there as well (not sure why but I learnt it somewhere) Several layers, dabbing the majority of the paint off each time. The job on the shoulders isn't as good as the chest but I was getting a little eager to finish by that point.
I'm still going to go over it with a clear matt spray to seal it all.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I really like the effect you've managed to get there mate.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Why thankyou, monsieur 'Baa Baa'. I shall endeavour to document it better when I do the collar and cod (although I'm not sure what scorch marks on the cod piece might say about my character).
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Looking really good brother... keep it up!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I love seeing people post awesome progress like this! Cool to see it evolve from the basics to its finished state! Keep it up!

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Hey another Aussie (Sydney?) Nice work there by the way impressive work on the armor ,
Just a thought but what colurs and brands of paint are you doing the helmet in ,Id steer clear from squirts ,
If you need a list of avalible colours and brands ill be happy to help, Ive done extensive resurch on spray paints,
being over here we dont have most of the popular paints people use
Also which helmet stlye are you going for , the SE version or classic Jedi helmet seeing you have the Boba maker lid , im
thinking mabey your going SE version
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks Jinto. I just got the internet back on at home, so haven't been able to answer you until now.
I'd love a list of available paints if you can spare the time. What I've ended up using wasn't the squirts (except the mandarin). I used Galmet colorbond paints, Cottage green is the darker one and pale eucalypt is the lighter green (which I misted over the top of the final layer of cottage green to get the colour I wanted).
As for the helmet, I haven't really thought about SE, I was just going ROTJ but I'll look more into it before I start painting it up.
Are you coming to 'Geddon this week? I'll bring my armour so you can have a look.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
I didn't want to make a mess of my BobaMaker Helmet, so I took to a Hasbro to practice my painting method:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...oPainted01.jpg
and here's a comparison with an unpainted Hasbro:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...oPainted02.jpg
I've only done the back of the helmet at this stage but I think it is an improvement. The colours won't perfectly match but I'm ok with it so far.

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Dont use pale euko thats to light use the on=e up from it all , they are colour bond colours so waht ever brand ytou are useing just look at the colour chart and pic the next in line it may not look right to what you think but its alot beter than the pale euko , the colour on the Hasbra is to light so dont use that as the guide ,
What brand paint are you useing ?

I think you're right mate. I had a look before and it doesn't match my armour at all. Still, I'll get the results in the end.
Nice eye on the pale eucalypt, too. Well spotted.
The colours I used and where I bought them are as follows:
Silver base colour: Dulux Quickdry 'Bright Chrome' (Bunnings)
The lighter green: Galmet fence, gutter and facia touch up - Colorbond 'pale eucalypt' (Stratco Hardware)
The darker green: Galmet fence, gutter and facia touch up - Colorbond 'cottage green' (Stratco Hardware)
Grey: the cheapest grey primer I could get my hands on.
Black: Odd Jobs 'Satin Black' (Stratco Hardware)
The darker red: Odd Jobs 'Indian Red' (Stratco Hardware)
The lighter red: (after a mist of white) Squirts 'Cherry Red' (Bunnings)
Kill stripes: Squirts 'Mandarin' (Bunnings)
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks gents.
I have decided it is time to have a go at my real bucket.
In this pic, I've masked the parts that will remain silver and sprayed the primer grey:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...kandPrimer.jpg
Next, I've masked the parts that will remain grey (I mixed some black paint with the latex so it shows better)
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...Primermask.jpg
And here, I've sprayed the beige looking colour that is only on the back of the helmet:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...rbondbeige.jpg
More to follow.

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
this is looking great brother! great job so far
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks.
Here's the light green on the back:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...Lightgreen.jpg
Some red on the front:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...0Build/Red.jpg
and last bit for tonight is the black upper cheeks:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...ppercheeks.jpg
I've also done the lower cheeks but the whole bucket is pretty much done now exept for the right ear and stencils (including kill stripes). I so much want to pull all the latex off now but it will be better if I wait and do the kill stripes/ ear and stencils first.

Bill- Great wk man! Im almost complete w/ my sons fett as well and have a hasbro for him. I wasnt going to mod the bucket at all but it just looks too cute man! I may just have to re-paint : )

-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks guys.
@ dynamic: the helmet above isn't the Hasbro. That was a one-off to test my method. The bucket I've just done is a BobaMaker.
I'm not really happy with the green on top and am re-spraying it this morning. I'll post when I'm done.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Bill mate that looks awesome! beautiful job!
what is it about the green you're not happy with?
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
the dome green is much to dark and the back green is to green it should be more of a blue-green then just green
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks Trav.
F4R is right, the dome green was awfully dark. I've re-done it but Photobucket is down at the moment, so I'll post pics later.
I don't think I'm going to change the back green though. It looks much better against the new lighter dome. In any case, I'm not going 100% SA.
Thanks F4R, too. I saw your comments on BHG as well and am glad others agreed with my assessment so far.
If it screams wrong to you guys after I've done it, please still let me know. I still want it to have the right feel, even if it isn't 100% accurate.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Yeh like I was saying over there the fact that its so hard to get paint is rough...could be worse i guess
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Photobucket still isn't working for me but I've managed to link to my facebook image.
I'm much happier now that I've resprayed the dome and cheeks:
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6450464_n.jpg
Killstripes and the white bit on the left ear also added.
The damage around the dent has been reduced as well. I think it was a bit over the top before.
Here's the right side of the bucket:
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._8067319_n.jpg
Still got to paint the RF, stalk and ear attachment but the bucket itself is pretty much done now.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Question: Should I now respray my chest armour to match the dome?
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
This is for the Australians out there. I've had a few people ask me for a list of paints I used so here it is (with pictures):
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...2_121249_n.jpg
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3489725_n.jpg
I've tried to list them approximately in order of application.
(1 Silver base colour: Dulux Quickdry 'Bright Chrome' (Bunnings)
(2 Grey: the cheapest grey primer I could get my hands on.
(3 The darker red: Odd Jobs 'Indian Red' (Stratco Hardware)
(4 The lighter red: (after a mist of white) Squirts 'Cherry Red' (Bunnings)
(5 Black: Odd Jobs 'Satin Black' (Stratco Hardware)
(6 The beige (on the back): Galmet fence, gutter and facia touch up - Colorbond 'Paperbark'
*I used the beige on the right ear as well then sprayed lightly over the top with some cheap gold spray. It is only a mist so shouldn't matter what brand gold you get.
(7 The lighter green: Galmet fence, gutter and facia touch up - Colorbond 'Wilderness' (Stratco Hardware)
(8 The darker green: Galmet fence, gutter and facia touch up - Colorbond 'cottage green' (Stratco Hardware)
(Not in picture) Kill stripes: Squirts 'Mandarin' (Bunnings)
These paints won't necessarily get you the level of screen accuracy that some guys expect but they are what I used.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Dont change the chest armor to match the dome theyre different colors
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Here's the new left ear colour. It is Galmet 'Pale Eucalypt'. The closest thing I could get to an olive drab. It's raining today, so the pic is in different light and the colours will not appear the same as before but the rest of the helmet remains unchanged.

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
excellent looking helmet bill
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Did some more painting yesterday. Here's a stack of my armour together, not including the knees which I also have now.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1789.jpg
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1788.jpg
You may or may not be able to notice that I've also done some weathering on the helmet. Bit of a scorch around the dent.
Getting there.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
****! thats coming along nicely Bill! Fantastic looking paint up i must say. Impressive... most impressive.
Just love that bucket paint job you managed to pull off :fettesb
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Wow, you can really see how the hard work is paying off, this has really evolved.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Excellent job there Bill! Everything is coming out awesome! The helmet, armor, the weathering...everything looks great, man! Keep the pics coming...
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Incredible job with the weathering and layering. Hope to get there someday with my ROTJ build.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Thanks everybody. It means alot coming from you all.
In all honesty, the paintjob isn't anywhere near as accurate as many of you achieve. The scratches etc are mostly estimations of how they look, not perfectly copied the way I see on some buckets and armour.
I'm really happy with how it is turning out so far and can't wait to get my soft parts so I can start sizing it all up.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ build
Very Very nice. A lot of work and details. Looks like you nailed it to me! This will be one nice suit!

Your last line is the most important part. It's your suit that you built and worked on yourself. You will be very happy with the end result. I once saw a guy grab his favorite parts from different versions of Fett (ESB, ROTJ, SE, Pre-pro), and it was one of the coolest suits I ever saw. Looking great, brother...:thumbsup

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
I've finally started to work on my gauntlets.
The flamethrower assembly that came with it was too long (not to mention being cast from a bit of wood). So I shortened it.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1872.jpg
Then I had an idea what I could use the offcut for:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1873.jpg
They are going to glue to the side of the gauntlet and then hold the flamethrower assembly on. Kinda like 'L' brackets.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1874.jpg
Then I drilled the holes for the flamethrower switches:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1875.jpg
and I'd never noticed this little red light on the gaunts before:
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/galle...le=5632&size=1
But lo, and behold, I had something very similar sitting on my computer room floor.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1877.jpg
It's amazing what you collect as a technician. It is a little bigger than the screen used item but it is certainly close enough for me.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Man the flame thrower really is cast from a piece of wood, LOL
Nice work ,Its all coming together ,
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Bit more work on the Gauntlets this afternoon. I've attached a hinge to either side of the left gauntlet.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1954.jpg
That one is the one that the gauntlet will open on.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1955.jpg
And that one, I can pull the hinge-pin out of so I can open the gaunt if I need to.
They aren't pretty gauntlets but I'm ok with that. Boba isn't about being pretty.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Can I sugest triming the front under thew key pad have a look at the real ones youl see what I mean youve got a whole lot of extra gauntlet there that has to go ,
all looking good though
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Yep, it's way too much isn't it? I'll get some of it off tomorrow. I thought the originals had just been damaged but you're right, you can see there is about an inch too much.
Thanks mate.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Here is the right gauntlet as it was.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/DSCF1977.jpg
I've already taken the side bit off because it is way too low for my liking. When I put it back on, it will also help hide the gap.
As a side note, both gauntlets are the same colour but this is a good example of how pictures taken in different light will change the appearance of colours.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
First time putting the gear on:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...eptember11.jpg
Heaps to do still but I can finally say it looks like Boba.
I've got myself a balaclava that will hide the chin (or chins), too.
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Looking good! You did a great job so far!
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Excellent work! It's really inspiring to watch the entire process and see it all coming together. Great job!

Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Nice one mate...looks excellent
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
So, I thought today would be a good day to start my jetpack.
First things first, get organised:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2141.jpg
I marked the centre of the thruster hole in preparation for the hole-saw:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2144.jpg
I made sure the hole was slightly smaller than I needed. Then I filed it a little larger with a rounded file:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2147.jpg
Making the thruster a nice, tight fit:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2146.jpg
I also marked a few more centre spots that I intend to use later on to help attach the bits:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2143.jpg
I glued and secured the fins to the rocket using araldite:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2149.jpg
Here's a stack-up of the bits:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2150.jpg
Then, I painted the parts that will be added later:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2148.jpg
And a base silver coat for the Jetpack itself (with a cookie):
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2154.jpg
I used latex to cover the bits that are meant to look like paint scratches, the same way I did on the helmet.
Here is part of the rocket, almost finished:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2155.jpg
I have done some more but this MOW jetpack is proving difficult to paint. I have washed and sanded the JP but paint just seems to keep behaving badly on it. I'll struggle through.
Of course, that's the good thing about Boba, his stuff is meant to be a bit dodgy. Lucky that. ;)
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
This is what it looks like now:
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/DSCF2158.jpg
If I had to, it would be perfectly troopable as it is but there are bits of paint coming off where there shouldn't be (as if anybody would notice).
The main problem is that I didn't give each coat time to set properly. That has ended up with the paint separating and showing the base resin instead of the first coat of aluminium. I now have some good surface prep and primer, so I'll be doing it all again but taking it slower.
Upside of it all is, I now know the colours I've picked look ok and when I strip it back and do it properly, I should have one schmick looking JP. (No point crying over poorly applied paint ;))
-
Re: WIP - Bill's ROTJ SE build
Work (partially) well done. I guess the hardest part was that with the cookie... But you are on the right track, so keep up the good work!
