Why Do Jet Pack's Cost So Much?

A plus for the "600" pack is that it is completely assembled, and comes with a harness system. It comes totally primed, and only needs a nice coat of paint.Definitely a lot of dinero for a jet pack, but whoa is it sweet :)

Great. I still need to buy a jet pack and I had no idea how expensive they are.

Oh well...that is one piece that I do NOT want to try to make myself so I guess that's some more money I'll have to part with!

If you can get by,with makeing your own.Do it.Good luck.Later
down the road you can always upgrade. What
I did for A harness.Go buy some 1.5 to 2 inch nylon straps.The tie down kind are perfect.Buy A $10.00 rivet gun.
Make your own.You can make it addjustable. With A rivet gun and
A sewing machine.Your good to go.If you get lucky. When you
buy the nylon straps they'll have the connectors.(black snap
connectors)Use those as well.My harnss has the female ends mounted to them.Leave straps on the top of your jet pack.
Mount the male ends there. So inessance your feeding the straps from your jet pack thru Your backplate and vest.Attach them to the female alreay mounted to your harness. As for the bottom of your jet pack. Two straps attached to the jet pack.Left side female right side male.
Same as before Feed thru the backplate and vest.Instead of attaching to your harness.Attach them to each other. This is very stable.I can jump up and down.My pack does not move. This all makes since in my world.I hope you can follow this and it helps.good Luck

actually im in the process of putting a pack together right now, and i have to say im impressed so far.i think i got the proportions right.i have been working on it since spring (on and off, moslty off) and im done with the body.im peiceing together the upper rocket section,im still looking for the right size balls (dont laugh) to attach to my thruster cones and i have to redo the sides for the taper.i have yet to decide on a harness system, but ill leave that for last.i cant wait till im done,it has been A LOT of work....WHEW!!!

You didn't come across strong :) Just a plug for the "600" pack if anyone is on the fence about such cabbage to part with for a jet pack.I personally owned the two other ones that are "available" and with an eye for the best money could buy I had to sell them once I had them assembled, and primed. At least I made others lives a little easier without having to assemble their jet packs either  as it is the worst part of assembling Fett stuff.

If only I could hone my airbrush skills to meet my psychotic eye for perfection I wouldn't have to pay for a paintjob  I'm real good at weathering with it though.........

I'm building my fg kit right now and with the amount of work and danger involved I wouldn't mind having spent a little more for a more accurate, fully rigged jp.

If I could afford it that is ;)

You know the best part about the whole thing is the challenge of creating the jet pack and finishing it. I'm not an expert on doing this but through the help and wisdom of all our fellow Fetta-holics here, I know I can build mine. It may or may not be exactly movie correct but nothing truly is. O.K. O.K...you guessed it, I'm cheap!
:D

I made mine out of fiberglass, and was going to mold it to run kits, but didn't think it would be worth it. I can't see being able to run these for less than $300, and still be worth my time and investment. Since I hear some people say that even $200 is too much to pay for a jet pack, I decided not to do it. When there's not a strong enough market for something, less people are going to want to supply. :facepalm

Having just completed my latest jet pack, I thought I should chime in here on the original question of why jet packs cost so much. For pictures, go to http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/mommydawn2000/lst?.dir=/Bounty+Hunter+Armor+kit+parts/New+Jet Pack+November+2002&.src=ph&.view=

The shere number of molds it takes to produce even one copy of an accurate pack is really where the cost is. Add to that the labor cost of pulling or pouring the parts and that ups is more.

My pack involved 2 vacuform molds and no less than 12 silicone rubber molds to produce the resin detail parts.

The material costs to make the molds was about $750.
The material costs per each jet pack is about $100
The time involved in making the molds is really incalculable at this point and it can take several hours to make and package/ship the parts to make a kit. To make a finished pack, you can easily spend 40-50 hours.

Just from the amount of labor, I'd normally charge well over $1000 for something like this if I were doing it for a movie/tv production, so $300 (or up to $600 for a fiberglass one) really isn't that bad. Its pricey either way. That is also why so many people prefer doing it themselves.

Let some sweatshop in China copy a jet pack today and tomorrow
you will be able to buy one in a dollar store for $9.99.....I dont know if that is a good thing!

I have a solution. This is how we are making mine. It is not as sturdy or made as good, but when it comes to looks its just as good. And its a lot lot cheaper. Make it out of a styrofoam/cardboard material. then paper mache and paint! You will still need a rocket though. Then paint. It looks just as good and really helps you if you have back problems, since its so light. So look into that for cheap prices.

hi all

I dont mind spending the cash on a decent JP but i think that others who cant afford $300 should'nt be excluded from finishing there costume.

So thats why ive decided to do the JP templates and share with others who couldnt afford to buy one and want to go down the route of making one from scratch.

Neil,

PM sent.
Also, gimme a while and I'll show you why good jp's cost so much. I'll post pics of what happens when you buy a $100 jp(a hard lesson learned)

See the warp in the center?

See the assed out side?

Here's the whole thing

Of course, these weren't the pics he posted to sell it....
This is a good example to prove the old adage: You get what you pay for.
