Why did you pick ESB or ROTJ Boba Fett?

Hi all, just curious.

For those who have completed or started a ESB or ROTJ Boba Fett, what was it for you that made you pick one film version over the other?

Thanks, I'm genuinely interested to hear.

Boba was a lot tougher in ESB. He just oozed bad vibes. I did not care much for the "technicolor" paint scheme in ROTJ. It does not come off very militant to me.

i like the rotj helmet better, thus the costume.

For me I like the SE Boba because I like the ESB helmet over the ROTJ. I also like the more colorful armor and jetpack of the ROTJ Boba. The ROTJ blaster to me looks alot cooler too. Hope that helps

+1 on what "Takeme" said. Love the ROTJ colour pallet. Plus, ROTJ was the very first, and I mean first, movie I ever saw in a theatre, as well as , my first introduction to Boba. Seems like a fitting way to repay one of my favorite movie characters of all time. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. BTW- Watchin ROTJ on SPike as I type this.

I got to go with what cojake said...ESB Fett just seemed more of a tough guy and I like his paint scheme better. Also I hated he got punked in ROTJ with the whole jetpack into the Sarlacc pit thing.

I went with the SE Fett because, like the other SE guys, I LOVE the ESB helmet but don't really like the ESB armor or jetpack paintjob. It is WAY too green for me. I mean come on, everything is green!!! The armor, jetpack, gaunts...ugh!! Haha!

I love the ROTJ armor and jetpack paintjob and with an ESB helmet, it is perfect!

At the time I started, i mainly went for ESB because there were very few around. I think back in the old days, there were maybe 10 of us dedicated to ESB from the get-go. Definatley not the case anymore!

I like the cohesiveness of the ESB style. Plus in ESB Fett shows no fear of Vader at all....not an easy task considering Darth's penchant for killing anyone that talks back to or fails him. I'm actually hoping to have my bucket done either tonight or maybe tomorrow.

Boba Fett is also the only character that Vader ever "backs down to" other than The Emperor in any movie. Very telling of Boba's reputation and skill.

Truth be told, when Empire woz due to hit the theaters and the chase figures were in stores, I woz immediately drawn to the character. Then seeing him in ESB just solidified the whole thing, but as much as I loved the ESB look, the ROTJ colors seem to really hit home with me and remind me the most of that old action figure (12 inch and standard) which we all know are now modeled from the pre-pro stuff. I never really studied his looks as much as I began to when I came here researching. So when I contacted Daz and told him wot I wanted, I didn't really care if it made sense to anyone or if it may prevent me from getting into the 501st should I apply. I wanted an ESB helm with everything else ROTJ. That's when I found out that woz indeed the SE Fett and I even heard some people refer to that as "the Hero Fett" here and there.

Hmm, wot a long about way to say I picked my version of the Fett costume because of the figures I had (and still have!) as a kid! LOL

I went for ESB mainly because of the helmet, but also the green gauntlets and jetpack are more to my liking. And the cape as well

And..you get two weapons!

I went for ROTJ as I prefer the colours of the pack and guants, I think ESB is a little bland for me, but I do prefer the ESB helmet so I may go special edition down the line

I love the ESB version but in the end it was the blue flight suit that turned me off. It just did'nt fit so thats why I picked the ROTJ

For me it is all because of a person named BobaFettish. Some of the old timers know who I am talking about. Chris was my Garrison CO and had the best Boba most of us had ever seen. It was a ROTJ SE. Yes I was on the board but, working on Jango. I had no clue how many different ver there where. When I lost my job last year, I sold all of him before anything was painted. If I get a chance to do Boba again, my goal is to have as nice of a ROTJ SE as Chris had.

Before I realized there was a difference, I was drawn to the ROTJ look. I was a kid when ESB and its toys were being promoted. I guess were using the Pre-production Fett for a lot of the marketing, which more closely resembles ROTJ.

If I can bring myself to sell all of my ROTJ stuff and do it all over again, I'll do a PrePro2. That's Fett for me.

I really like the "natural" look of the ESB Fett. All the colors coordinate with the entire suit. Things just seem to gel together. Plus, the Helmet is just awesome. I like most did not realize all the differences between the Fetts before coming to this site, but I've always been partial to ESB since that was the best film out of the original trilogy.

I think I'm going to end up making my own "mashed up" Fett.

Helmet: ESB
JP: ESB
Gaunts: ROTJ
Flightsuit: ROTJ
Gun: ROTJ
Belt: ESB

Among other things. I have yet to pick out all the other nuances.

Glad that some of you SE version fans posted as well, my apologies for leaving that out of the choices in the beginning.

I chose the ESB version That was always the version i thought of when i thought of Fett. I also liked the uniform Green of the armor gaunts and JP,gave it a very militant feel i thought. I like the flash tube in the blaster better than the ROTJ blaster also. I didnt like the multi-colored JP of the ROTJ version,or the helmet, or flamethrower design. the only thing i actually like from the ROTJ Fett is that the gaunts are red, and the grey jumpsuit is cool. otherwise, i just plain ol' like the details better on the ESB Fett

im all sorts of messed up. my favorite movie since i was 5 has been empire strikes back, but something about the burgandy gaunts stuck in my mind when i started building my fett so i went with the rotj even though i like the esb boba better

i like the ROTJ rocket and gauntlets. i never really remembered they were green in ESB until this site.

My Fett for Halloween was ROTJ, but I'm converting it to Empire Strikes Back Fett. Why? IMO, Empire Strikes Back was by far the better movie, and I tend to agree with the people saying that Fett is a bit more ****** in ESB. Also I feel that an ESB costume represents Fett's epic first appearance on the big screen, whereas a ROTJ costume more represents his pitiful death at the hand of his own jetpack
Either way though, like some have said, it's the same character so it's all about personal preference!

I like ROTJ paint scheme a lot more than ESB. I cant stand that solid green ESB jetpack :P

But I like the ESB helmet more than the ROTJ. I like the weathering pattern more.

Makes me wonder why I went ROTJ instead of SE.

I went ESB because I had to start with one version.

No matter if he has the green armor or the ROTJ armor, even the PrePro-Versions!

He is just the Fett Man! I like the way this character has been created and the way he spreads this kind of "mystery".

So for a true Fett Fan there´s only one choice: Try to get every version!

I already started getting ROTJ parts after I assembled my ESB and the helmet for PrePro 1 is on the way.

You see: Fett is a never ending hobby! And that´s what makes it so special!

Well I went ESB for the same reason as others said, he was just tougher in ESB. He was the only Fett who accomplished his job. One of the members here used to have a signature that said something like "what did your Fett do today? get your head chopped off? Die screaming like a girl into a huge vagina? Hunt and capture a notorious bounty?" and that sealed my choice.

I did ESB because of the unityof the green gaunts, armor, backpack etc. All the Fett versions are cool though.

Another reason I picked ESB is because I have a bit of a belly... the ammo pouches lined up in front would have made my belly seem to stick out more. Its not as bad with the ESB.

I'm starting a Boba build, and I'm going to end up with a SE Boba, simply because I have come to enjoy the looks of the combination of armor.

Okay, no, I'm doing a SE just because that's what says Boba to me. The ROTJ outfit looks closer to the Prepro 2, which is how most of us first saw him, and yet it's a costume that was actually seen on screen. Add to this the better helmet and you've got the SE.

I hear all the time how people don't like the technicolor scheme, but that's how he was originally envisioned . . . having "borrowed" different bits and pieces from different places.

The all green ESB scheme is kind of blah. I also prefer the more intricate blaster in ROTJ. Always wished the prepro sling blaster had seen screen time too, though.

Reason I chosed to go ROTJ version in my opinion is Blaster are looks better than ESB, and Jetpack, I like the multicolored paint jobs on it, afterward all other armor came to place and that was only available at the Ebay at the time, this was before I found out about TDH.

I choose the Special edition Boba Fett. ESB helmet/Rotj costume.

Mainly because I didn't want to spend another $200 on a sidearm. But I like the color scheme as well. Its more mix and match looking as on par with Boba's persona and rare to find Mandalorian gear.

ESB all the way for me.

1. It's the best film of the seven SW films.
2. It has a more military feel to it (no clown JP paintjobs).
3. It was the version Jeremy Bulloch was made by TDH team - that was the clincher for me.

Seven? I only know of three.

1. esb fett is tougher than rotj fett
2. i like the gauntlets better
3. i used to like the rotj jetpack because he actually used it in rotj, but the esb is more appealing to me now

5. you get the sidearm, and I find the blaster rifle more interesting and complex

I'm just starting mine. I am going with ESB. I was back and fourth between the three (ESB, ROTJ, SE). I guess it's because ESB was my favorite movie out of the series and seeing the armor build for Jeremy Bulloch was inspiring.

I like the ESB primarily because of that unique scar over his right eye. I feel it's essential to the look.

i dont know which way to go. i got a ESB helment. jetpack next better decide.

Sounds weird:

It started with the ROTJ Darth Vader, which is my favorite because of the beginning scene when he arrives at DS 2.

So...you can't put an ESB Boba next to a ROTJ Vader

Don't get me wrong, ESB is the masterpiece of all three films, the Ewoks and the excessive use (Jabbas palace and the sailbarge) of weird and fake looking alien characters ruined ROTJ I think.

Also, the storyline of ROTJ was much dictated through the previous episodes so there was little to no room for the progress of the story.

As for the looks, I like both Bobas but I recently fell in love with the Prepro Version.

ESB for me

The scene where Vader is sitting in the dining chamber in Bespin did it for me.
They way Boba walks into the room besides Vader is so slick and atmosferic.. way cool!

The suit that Jeremy got also convinced me to do a ESB Fett.

I'm just starting my Fett, originally I thought yea ROTJ because of the colours, then after watching ESB again, which imo is a far better film - especially for Boba, I changed to ESB.

The greens are really growing on me, I now think ROTJ is a bit gaundy and ESB is more subtle.

Well for me, it just seemed much more realistic to go with the green from ESB... what stands out more than bright maroon and a clown Jetpack?...the full OD just makes him look that much more menacing...

well, Yes, boba fett was "debuted" in the holiday special, as a cartoon. There are a few members here who have brought that style to life, so it can be considered a 7th movie.

And Fett was mirrored in ROTJ in editing. Probably just an editing error in continuity, seeing how its only for a few seconds...

And really, I enjoyed tales of the bounty hunters....showed fett in a PROFESSIONAL light...

I respect your opinion on Tales of the Bounty hunters... I just don't think it was very well written, and I do not care for Fett's personality in it. It's just not the Fett that I know

The flipped film thing happens occassionally. Usually a mistake but a little too obvious in this case, considering the range finder, and of course could have been fixed in the SE if that were the case. I'm thinking it was more likely done on purpose to be consistent with the film axis. i.e. Keeping the geography of Fett is at point A., Leia is at point B. and they have a line of sight that the camera stays to one side of which is the filming axis. However, in ROTJ, I get disoriented in the SE anyway with all the extra geography of CGI inserted stuff, I'm not sure where the heck anyone is supposed to be.

As for Tales of the Bounty Hunter, I really enjoyed it, too. I especially prefer any story with only a hint of Fett's origins to one where he's explained away as an illegitimate spawn / clone (and an evilly gleeful one at that).

I saw the Fett Helmet history poster, but are there any high quality actual side by side comparison pics of these 2 helmets?

ESB has to be THE Star Wars movie to me. It always has. It was the first movie I remember in the theater as a kid, the best Vader, sets and to me... Acting (although that is a loose term)
The ESB Fett I will build up will look great with my ESB Vader.

I chose the ESB Vader for the look as well as the movie feel of him. He is driven, just like Fett. Plus... ROTJ, both go out like chumps.

Boba only fell into the Sarlac he gets out...I just like everything about the SE ROTJ Fett like most others said. Helmet from ESB and I like the Gauntlets styling of the ROTJ...I would have painted the JP different but other than that its still cool. And hes still a bad dude.

Well, for me it was siz of one, half a dozen of the other... I originally opted for the ROTJ, due to the colour scheme and also beacuse I could get my hands on a MR blaster dirt dirt cheap...However, the more I looked into Fett and the more I got dragged into the Sarlac pit, I realised I wanted to change to ESB. Everyone I spoke to at the time said ESB, ESB, and yes the ESB movie is also my favourite. Additionally, ESB Fett looks so military to me with all that green, he just looks much more mean, more serious, more like a bounty hunter... At the end of the day, just look at what you want and what feels right in your gut... ESB, ROTJ or SE.... For me it's ESB, end off..... Fett is Fett, no matter what colour scheme he is... it's all good......

Greetings fellow dent heads! Yes, I'm a newbie. I've been trolling/stalking these boards since Christmas. I've been an avid collector of vintage Star Wars toys since the days when girls had coodies. I have a Star Wars room in my home. It's decorated with vintage toys galore. I'll post some photos one of these days to show it off.

It wasn't until late last year that I decided to expand my collecting into the costume/prop world. I figured it would enhance my Star Wars room. And I chose...drum roll please...

ESB Boba Fett

1. It's my favorite movie of all time.

2. He's the Boba that hangs with Vader. In ROTJ SE, he's too busy hanging out with Tiger Woods' leftovers. With all due respect to all y'all ROTJ fans, he lost his edge. Like Rocky Balboa, he became civilized. As a result, Boba got b*%#@ slapped the same way The Italian Stallion got his butt whooped by Clubber Lang. Where was Patrick Swayze to say to Lucas "Nobody puts Boba in the corner!" (Dirty Dancing reference for those who don't venture outside of Sci Fi!) It was a disgraceful end for a character that deserved better. But I'm fortunate to say, my therapy continues to go well some 26+ years later as I continue to recover from this massive movie injustice. Perhaps in the Special Special Edition, Boba will miss hitting the Sail Barge and just float off into space where he meets up with the cow that jumped over the moon and the muppets.

So that's that. Thus far I have a helmet, thanks to Stormtrooperguy. Cape and braids from Woodman. It's going to be a slow and steady race but I look forward to someday reaching the finish line.

Well, I'm alittle tardy to the party, but this is a valid question, I thought I'd share my 2-cents worth.

I'll admit that the ESB Boba's performance was lengthier and more important to the overall storyline. However, I thought that the ROTJ Boba had a much more impressive attitude than the ESB. He seemed cool, collected and professional whereas I felt that the ESB boba was kinda thuggish (This is just my personal opinion, so no offense to all the ESB Fetts out there).
Aside from this, though, I just really liked the ROTJ costume. I thought the red gaunts went realy well with the rest of the costume, and the ROTJ EE3 was realy sick looking. I also prefered the gray jumpsuit to the powder blue one seen in the ESB version
But honestly, they're both the same bad-to-the-bone bounty hunter, and both reeeeealy awesome costumes to make.

Again, this is just my 2 cents worth

Up until two years ago, there were only about 5 ESB suits out there. Once the JB Project happened, you don't see anyone build an ROTJ/SE suit anymore.

I was mainly talking about the helmet but the JEDI pack may make that a wash. LOL!

That is one thing I DEFINITELY like about the ESB suit, though. I think the two tone cape looks really sick. Sucks that didnt end up being a part of the SE suit.

The reason I decided to go ROTJ was basically the colour of the gaunts and JP. I dont like the "all green" look of ESB Boba. Plus the blaster looks better in Jedi. I'd have preferred a sidearm as well though. Pity that was left out.

I like the ROTJ gauntlet color and the flight suit, but I like the ESB Weapons and for some reason the cape is how I decided to start on an ESB Fett. Maybe that's a silly reason.

Completely understandable..... The ESB cape is the one thing about the ESB that I really, really like.

Boba in ESB was more like Clint Eastwood in the " Man with no name" Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. He's bad, mysterious, and has a moral fortitude only he understands but you can respect. He's the guy you don't want to know, but the guy you want to be.

I like the ESB over the ROTJ simply because he seems a little tougher. Take the torture scene for example: Boba didnt want Vader to kill Han simply because he would be worthless and Vader was gonna compensate him, but Lando only wanted Vader to keep to his deal and ole Darth verbally back handed him into those stupid clouds. The ROTJ Fett hung around that stinkin hole that is Jabba's palace and went down like he had a glass jaw. Dont get me wrong, I know he is still the same dude but the paint scheme and attitude of the ESB I like better. Really the only thing I liked more about ROTJ Fett was the blaster, but I think mister Fett would be deadly with an empty super soaker. Just my thoughts.

It all boils down to which version you like but it is true that an ESB will cost more due to all the little details and a ROTJ is probably easier to paint, especially the helmet.

The first part is correct. The ESB would cost more due to more parts (the extra sidearm, for example). The second part is wrong. Except for the helmet as you mentioned, there's more weathering on the entire rest of the armor parts that you need to try and match up if going for a super accurate ROTJ paint job. It's far more difficult to paint an accurate ROTJ full costume than it is to paint an accurate ESB full costume. Now about the helmets....with everyone wanting ESB helmets and lots of people painting them with ESB weathering stencils available even, the few ROTJ helmets out there still all have to be painted freehand as no stecils for that helmet exists to my knowledge. So I suppose that makes an accurate ROTJ helmet as difficult to paint as an accurate ESB helmet, right? My 2 cents.

What?! Painting a RotJ helmet is way more dificult than a TESB one. For the ESB one you just need to apply the color but for the RotJ one you must study how to apply them, how much here, how much there... And also the scratches are harder to nail compared to the ESB ones.

Even though my favorite color is green I chose the ROTJ/SE look for my Boba. For me, the all green armor and JP just looked to plain and had no 'pop' unlike the ROTJ version.

try and look at the back of the ESB helmet though its pretty in depth...the back of the ROTJ isnt anywhere near as bad. But theyve both got some tough paint

Try to nail the weathering on the RotJ helmet. On the ESB you can find a few blackwash and some pastels, the RotJ one has a kind of grey applied in some ways harder and on others lighter, with some scratches weathered and some others not. For the back, the ESB, as you said, has a (harder?) heavier paintjob, but with stencils you're practically done. What do you say about the rest of the RotJ helmet, like top or mandibles or cheeks, where to get the correct way of painting and weathering is more dificult than getting all the costume (included armor, excluded jetpack IMO) weathered and painted? You can't just apply the colour layers and then blackwash it...

But, as I said, it's just my opinion having painted almost a full ESB helmet, and being painting a RotJ helmet.

honestly IMHO the ROTJ paint job looks trashy to me...but its just my opinion...which is another reason I went with the SE fett...the ESB helmets paint looks more Realistic. The ROTJ looks like a Boba got smacked by someone with a paint brush with silver paint on it. Not like its been through some stuff.

Awe heck fellas! You know you like the ESB better deep down. Its when you first see Boba and Its where you fell in love with that helmet. ROTJ was a supreme let down for Fett fans everywhere. I personally like both, but if I had to choose it would be old tried and true ESB.

I personally saw him first on the Holiday Special when it was originally on TV, but I was really young, so my first real rememberance of him was when the back of the action figure packages mentioned the special mail away figure of him. You know they used the Pre-Pro Boba as base for the original figure so the multi-colored Boba to me is the first Boba I remember because I had the figure around the time ESB came out. Since I spent a lot of my childhood playing with Star Wars figures (more often than seeing Star Wars movies in theaters back then before VCRs where I could watch them at will), I'd see a multi-color Boba figure every day. Therefore, when I grew up and made a Boba costume as an adult, I went ROTJ because that multi-colored Boba was the only Boba toy I had every day in my youth so he was my "tried and true" version. The original action figure line never made an ESB colored Boba figure.

Originally my first Boba costume version was SE, but then years later I got another helmet and have been full ROTJ ever since. My costume is heavily M.O.M based because I'd seen that exhibit probably 10 times in 2 different states. I painted all my armor using the pics Art Andrews took and put on the first Boba Fett reference CD. I did want to keep it more ROTJ original, so used the ROTJ codpiece instead of the Pre-Pro one used on the M.O.M. exhibit. I also modified most of my Fettpride armor plates to more accurately match the M.O.M. armor, including filling in 2 of the 3 the dents on the right shoulder bell. Yes the ROTJ movie suit had the dents there (and different weathering on gauntlets, etc), but since I was using M.O.M. pics as my total painting reference, I chose to make it like the suit as seen there. The only thing I kept more to the original movie suit is I didn't add the black smudge on the left shoulder bell. As I slowly upgrade my own ROTJ suit, I have considered making a second suit (ESB) as a back-up costume. It would't be as awesome as my ROTJ, but then again it doesn't have to be since it's ESB.

For me I like the SE Boba because I like the ESB helmet over the ROTJ. I also like the more colorful armor and jetpack of the ROTJ Boba. The ROTJ blaster to me looks alot cooler too. Hope that helps

I have started putting together an ESB Boba Fett. I am making all the soft parts myself and having a few talented friends to help with other builds (such as the ammo belt, boots, blaster). The helmet, armour, jetpack are coming from some reputable members on here. Hopefully I'll be able to get some pics up soon.

For me there was no question as to which version of Fett I would do. ESB has been my favourite SW movie ever since I was a kid, and Fett was a big reason - he is mysterious, calm and ultra-cool. ESB Fett has been a dream costume for me for a long time. I have a couple Rebel Legion costumes and a 501st costume, but Fett will be the ultimate once it's done.

I'm new to the dented helmet and I've been trying to get into this for some time now. I have finally acquired the ROTJ jet pack and torso armor. I'm sold for the ROTJ armor partially b/c of the color scheme but also b/c he used this armor for his most legendary feat in the series. ppl say it's not as cool b/c he got knocked into the sarlacc with this armor, but it was in THIS armor he escaped from the sarlacc. Both sets are great but ROTJ all the way!!

I'm choosing ESB because I like the colour combination his suit has. Also because its the first time we see him and the mystery behind his origin and how he got into the bounty game and even working along vaders side.

ESB the colors made more sense, he just seemed more mysterious and deadly, besides i picture the clown pack with a corny and useless death scene.

Honestly, ESB was my favorite Star Wars and the movie I fell in love with Fett over. I never even considered a ROTJ, even before I knew about all the vast differences in the costume.

ESB is my favorite film but I had to go with ROTJ simply so I could swap out parts with a custom Mando I want to build once i get Boba done. My custom Mando is going to be an "arctic" hunter so being able to use the lighter flight suit will save me a bit of money.

I'm just starting, but the Empire Strikes Back version seems to resonate much more with me. My goal is to have a complete ESB setup in time for next year's Celebration. Ever since I waited by the mail box for my mail order promotional Boba Fett as a kid and worn my underoos Boba Fett tee-shirt to play, I've thought the character was awesome.

No question: ESB Fett is the best. The overall design of this suit flows better colorwise. Fett looks very professional at what he does which is to make his quarry's life a nightmare knowing he is coming for them. I'm not a big fan of the red gaunts; the red on Fett's helmet works and it draws your eyes right to his face. Overall, the ROTJ suit looks a bit dissheveled like this Fett had slept in it for a while, while the ESB verison looks like he's been taking care of it; compare the cleanliness to Jango's suit and you'll see what I mean. ESB for me, and besides, it's the first version onscreen of Fett!
