Weathering Ammo Belt

I am looking for some ideas on how to weather my belt , i'm making a rotj style from leather and need some suggestions on what to use and how to do it. I also need to know how long to make the belt is there a special way to measure yourself or should i go grab a belt from the closet and use that for a ref ?
