The damage is white because the belt and boxes were originally white vinyl and were painted over to look like brown leather. Where the belt took damage the white underneath shows through... So, if you want yours to look like it should, I would take a white drybrush approach, along the lines of what most people do with their blasters, but use silver to drybrush on the edges. Keep in mind, if you are going for the look at the time of filming there was a lot less damage to the belt than we see today at the exhibits like MoM and AoSW. Here are a few photos taken during filming to give you a better idea of the damage seen then.
I find that white shoe polish also works well. I dabbed it on with a 00 brush is some spots and used a toothpick dipped in it to make really fine dots and white "scratches".

Silly question but are the flaps flaps? And do they have stitching or is the stitching painted on?
If its stitched, how did they keep it 'yellow'.
This has always boggled me as ive never seen it in person.
Check out the threads (and the vinyl) under the flap as compared to that outside the flap that has had the dye applied.
Art these are great! Thank you!
You are very welcome.
