Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

After some very, very thorough research by some of the Fett sticklers here along with an exhaustive search for it's origin, we feel that the most accurate vest fabric currently available has been located. The color is a very "warm" gray (almost white) and the fabric composition (weave, texture) is extremely close to that of the MoM RotJ vest. Look at the pics below and judge for yourself.

The manufacturer of this material has a somewhat limited supply of it. They also only make this material about once a year, so when they run out of this batch, it won't be available again until 2004.

This color is for the RotJ vests. The ESB vests are slightly darker, and we are not 100% positive how well it will accept dye due to the very small test sample that was provided. A similar material that was located did accept dye, but we do not want to promise that this one will. Due to the limited supply of this material and the fact that the manufacturer will not do small sales of it (they are a wholesaler who deals in bulk), we need to do a big order of it. Therefore if you are interested in getting in on this possible one-time only deal, please post below so we can get an exact amount needed. The cost is $16.00/yd. I would recommend no less than 2 yds. for a vest, although I personally am going to get 2-1/2 just to be on the safe side (something I recommend). That would make it $40 + S&H. A NON-OFFICIAL delivery date would be about a month from the date they receive payment. Only post IF you can make this monetary commitment now as we want to order it a.s.a.p. Once we know the total amount to order, we will request payments.

A side note: This is also the same fabric used on the backs of Fett's gloves (the white panels).

Hey, BF. Go ahead and delete this after you read it, but maybe you could work into the post about getting a bit more for the same-as-the-vest neck thingy too.

I am trying to nail down a dependable seamstress. As far as the perfect pattern, I am still looking for that myself. I am well aware of the Simplicity cheerleader pattern, but it is not what I had in mind.

The fabric looks great. I know the neck and vest have been said to be the same. But I think the Anklets have been said to be the same also. Correct me if Im wrong. The back of the gloves I was unaware of. If its something that would come together in two weeks I'd be game. You'd have to PM if earlier as the wife does not like to much stuff on any one paycheck. I have gauntlets in the shoot right now.

I'm sure I could dirty the $hit out of it without going for the die job. Sure would be a lot better than what I have! Although it makes me nervious to get involved with a bunch of wannabe ROTJers I think I am in as well!!

Re: Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

Thanks for the quick replies guys as this is going to be a fairly quick deal.

WPK, we were actually discussing the dirtying of the vest. It appears that the original RotJ vest may have actually been white and dirtied up to give it the gray color. If you blow up the pics big enough, you see white in the 'pockets' of the fabric. Still, the 'warm' gray fabric we are looking at actually matches it up pretty **** nicely.

I need to study the pics a bit more before I will say that the vest and neckpiece are the same fabric. They are obviously different colors, but fabrics........ I dunno. The ankle covers are the same material as the cloth belt pouches, not the vest. That is a cotton blend of some kind, definately not the same as the vest fabric.

I currently have a vest pattern. It is not the best, but I may be able to tweak it to my standards. I am trying to secure a very accurate pattern from someone else. I am awaiting an email from them to see if I can secure the rights to it. Once I (hopefully) do, I am going to ask a girl who works as a seamstress in the costume dept. at my college if she'd be interested in making mine. If she agrees, I'll see if she'd be interested in doing more and what she'd charge. At this point, this is NOT A CONFIRMATION OF EITHER THE PATTERN OR THE SEAMSTRESS, so hold off on asking me for the details. However, the fabric is ready and in-stock. If you have a seamstress and/or pattern already, don't wait on me.

Once I know the total yardage to order, I will let everyone know the payment info.

Re: Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

Great news guys! Based on the total yardage I see so far, we've got enough for their minimum order. I am going to put a deadline on this offer for midnight Friday night (2/21) so that we can get this order made next week. Payment will need to be made prior to the order itself (I don't have the cash to front this deal for everyone). I am working out those details now, but PayPal will probably be the best way to go. If you don't have a PayPal account, we can probably wait for a money order.

What is the concensous on the neck fabric? The same material or different? I think the neck material is more of a silky material myself, but I am open to anyone's opinions. Here is a better shot of the vest.

This is freaky material. Up close the "grain" is very obvious but from just a few inchec back is disappears and lookd smooth and slick, thus the confusion.

Re: Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

I have to agree that the fabric is the same. Brak's described the material perfectly. The fabric closest the camera will have that grain. But as the focus falls back just a bit, you can see that the neck and the vest share the same "slick" look. I'll have to find the photo again, but the best pics to illustrate this effect are MOM/AOSW pics that have a part of the vest in the immediate foreground and the vest/neckseal area in the backround.

C17LM beat me to the punch with that pic. After I looked at the neckpiece material really, really close, I too am very confident that they are one and the same, just different shades of gray. Therefore, I would recommend to order at least 2-1/2 to 3 yds to make sure you've got enough for the neckpiece. If you've already posted an amount above and you want to up your order, just edit your post as I will not make the official list until after the deadline.

The bulk amount will be shipped to one location, cut into the desired amounts, then shipped out to everyone. S&H is going to be $5.00 within the U.S. which should also cover the PayPal fees. Overseas and Canadian orders will be a bit more, but the exact amount won't be known until it ships.

I'd like to get 4 yards . . . enough for vest, neck, and gloves for myself and a few extra pairs gloves.

A few people have asked me if they could get gloves made to spec if the correct material was ever found. I guess that time is now.

Re: Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

Do you have the exact 'name' of the material? I think I'm going to be in on this one as well. I will do a little creative financing and probably throw my name into the hat before the end of the day.

How wide is the material? 60 inches? 45?

Just a note: Most of the vests I've sewn, I've used the same material inside and out, for continuity purposes. For those not familiar with pattern cutting, you might be able to lay the patterns onto the fabric in such a way as to have enough material for TWO vests, if you use a different material for the inside. I've always wanted to have two vests onhand for those really humid two-day conventions.

That's why I asked about the width of the fabric. 45 inches would work, but 60 would ROCK.

I'm not sure of the exact width of the fabric as they only sent a small sample. I was under the impression that there was a set standard width for bolts of fabric, but I don't know if it is 45, 60, or ??? We'll send them an email and see if we can find out.

Yeah, it's usually either 45 or 60, unless it's considered 'upholstery' fabric, in which case it comes on roles as wide as 6 or 7 feet.

    Thanks for looking into it!

O.K., I got the answer for you batninja. The width of the material is 50" however there is an inch on each edge to fuse it so that it doesn't fray. So basically it'll be 48" wide of useable width.

Chris, I'll see if I can get a scan of the other side for you.

Doesn't fray? How thick is this material? Do you think it will be able to hold whatever method we use of securing the armor (Bolts, glue, velcro, etc)? We may need to install a strong liner.

Put me down for 3 yards.

I intend to use different fabric for a liner myself. It might also help to use a fabric adhesive (between the shell and liner) where you know the plates are going to sit. Ought to give a nice thick area, if you need to drill/press/cut through the fabrics.

Re: Vest Fabric Interest Thread [limited time offer]

Just the same with most bolts (rolls) of fabrics, the ends are usually a bit frayed. It is just the way they are cut and handled. I don't anticipate there being any problems with it holding armor.

Chris, the sample they sent was stuck to a piece of paper and had a sticky backing on it (what we are ordering won't) so you can't see the backside. Personally, I'm content with how well the front side of it matched up to the real vest.
