Armor Attachment Method: Jewelry Pins with Clutch Backs.

awesome.....i ordered some of the good clutch backs from the link above! I will definately have picts
Oooo! If you go this route I'd like to see pictures!

also, I got my pins at Michaels...I'll put the link below. I also posted a link to the locking clutch backs earlier in this thread. I highly recommend using them.

Thanks to this thread, I was inspired to buy some locking backs instead of the clutch backs. I'm curious, does it seem like it makes a difference for your areas that the pins pierce through the vest? Meaning as you wear it does it do more damage, less, or about the same wear and tear? I have been trying to read the best way to help the vest live longer after putting pins through it. Either the glue used on the amour, or maybe nail polish?

I'm using this for my shoulders now, and it seems to work fine. A very simple and elegant solution for those of us who don't want to modify or damage our flak vests.

how did i miss this? this is genius! excellent idea! I will be using this idea for future builds. Also as a side note, the pinlocks or "pinsavers" with the set screw hold very strong. A small washer could help prevent them from pulling through as well. But yea, i have used them on my BMX bikes to make an "end" on a brake cable. even with the constant pulling, they never slipped. You can see them here...

Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for...someone who has tried the backs with the set screw first hand. So far I have tried the originals (don't recommend to anyone as they will pop off guaranteed) and the improved clutch backs I noted earlier and posted a link for, which so far not one has popped off. I am also using washers in between but it really is not needed with the improved clutch backs since they already have a wide base. My only concern with these, and the main reason I have not tried it yet, is they look kind of bulky. I've been holding off purchasing them and waiting for a first hand experience before I made the investment. What are your thoughts on their bulk factor under the vest? Notable or nothing to worry about?

I've used the pull type and they are much more secure than the standard ones the pins come with. Have you had to trim your return edge on the armor to accommodate the pins?

I'm sorry for the delay, I just noticed I never answered your question. There is no need to trim the return edge to accommodate the pins and I recommend gluing the pins as close to the edge as possible.

10 penny nails? What is this you are speaking of? Are you referencing the original suit?
Gentleman was asking about the back plate attachment. I jokingly referenced instead of using the pins, to use nails and nail it into your back. Dumb joke, but hey, I sniff bondo and fiberglass resin as part of my hobby...

Man, I always take you too literally lol! I never know with you.

Last night was the first time I trooped with this method. I went for a quick holloween trick-or-treat with my nephews. Even though my suit wasn't fully functional it was a good test run with the jewelry pins and the locking clutch backs. We were only out walking from door to door for about 1 1/2 hours but I was getting in and out of cars as well as a Chipotle visit. I mean how can you beat a $3 Chipotle burrito? Anyways, absolutely no problems with the clutch backs. I also got word from Catbread, aka Raizo, that he has tried this method trooping and had zero issues with the chest armor but did have issues with them bending at his knee attachments...note: I wouldn't recommend using these pins for knee attachments.

I also finally received my Locking Backs with Set Screws today!!! Update with photo's and comments incoming...

Yeah I did the Halloween with my daughter. I wasn't able to order the clutch or locking versions. I can say that the stock backs do come off, but you only bleed a little. And the vest is so padded it was able to staunch the flow of blood till paramedics arrived. (Just kidding Fettastic!)

Lol, I like it...Original!

Unless you forget the locking backs, then it's the "pay no mind to the hemorhage" method!

Lol. For the record, I do not recommend the "pay no mind to the hemorrhage" method.

Genius! A couple of questions... how many pins will I need? Counting up what you did, it seems like around 50? Also, for the back plate, are using pins at all or are you depending on the JP harness and the collar connection to keep the back plate in place?

Originally I used around 50 but since then I have done 2 armor sets and now it's more like 60. For the back plate it is not necessary to pin it to the vest because either your harness will keep it tight against your back or the weight of the Jetpack will.

I have a lot of updates for this thread and I am going to try and consolidate all my findings with pictures either tonight or tomorrow.
