tkRyno's ESB Boba Fett (Bought, tweaks & upgrades)

tkRyno

Jr Hunter
Hi, I'm in the 501st Legion, Golden Gate Garrison (San Francisco Bay Area). My only Star Wars costume for the last 4 years has been a Stormtrooper. It was quite a daunting build, followed by my Iron Man the next year, then Hawke from Dragon Age and other random things. I always thought to myself, when I REALLY decide I want to Star Wars again, it's gotta be Boba Fett! Since I'm not tall enough for Vader, he is easily my most favorite other character. I was always intimidated by the amount of work and money that would go into the build, which is probably why I kept putting it off. Well, I was SO lucky enough to find a fellow 501st member selling his complete ESB Boba Fett right here (and on 501st) forums. For $3500, he happened to be my same weight, height and shoe size!

The box just came in from Mexico.

I tried a couple things on, boots, jumpsuit, flak vest, gloves, belts all fit woot! The helmet didn't initially fit. Previous owner had a hard foam (like inside of a bicycle helmet maybe) inserted in there and it made it so I couldn't get my head all the way in. Thankfully this piece was simply wedged in there, not permanently mounted so I'm able to take it out and work my own solution. One of the top caps on the side tanks of the jetpack came off, just needs a regluing. The rangefinder is a bit loose and falls to the forward/down position easily, probably just need to tighten. The flamethrower on the left gauntlet fell apart in a few pieces, probably broke in shipping, I've got to see if I can fix and/or make / order a replacement.

Just a couple of parts missing:

-The 4th shin tool, the jetpack adjustment tool is missing. Upon further inspection of his pics, he didn't have one there either.
-Thong, will need to make.
-Magnets for attaching the shoulder bells, I know I've got some lying around here somewhere.

Tweaks / upgrades to be made:

-Helmet interior to fit my big head
-The end on the sidearm is too big for the hole of it's holster, so you need to unscrew to get it in or out. I will be making the hole bigger on that sucker.
-I know this is totally nitpicky but with the underside of the armor all white, I plan to paint it all in, except the gauntlets and helmet.
-Ordered a rangefinder light and servo kit from salamanderking
-Bells (or something) for spurs
-Voice synth app for iPhone + y-splitter + aker amp for the voice
-Might see if I can fit wireless stuff in there too.
-Telemetry sounds mp3 + aker
-Balaclava from man of war studios (ebay) that I think I'll need to weather a little bit too

One more thing.... this is my 50th post!!

Wow I only wish I could get so lucky, it is very nice you found everything, I am not a big guy so I knew I would be getting everything from scratch most likely or building my own. Either way enjoy the suit and hope to see you at celebration next year!

A couple of observations.

1) The flamethrower looks wrong...but there are no good closeup shots to confirm. I am utilizing Darth's flamethrower as a reference.

BH_ESB_Boba_Left_Gauntlet.jpg

2) The gloves do not look correct. Both of the pads on the back of your forehand look the same size. Here is a reference photo.

793px-ESB_Boba_Gloves.jpg

3) The jetpack harness is not screen accurate. There are a ton of links here for a more accurate harness...but you are also missing the diver's buckle with the harness.

4) Weather the toe spikes...they look too gleaming.

5) Silver wookie braid looks like its missing.

6) Are there darts on the right guantlet?

7) Check the collar studs. The top portion of the right-most collar stud is painted red. The far left-most collar stud is painted gray or black.

I am sure others here would have some tips for you. Higher detail photos of both sides of the equipment would help as well.

Thanks crumdum, incredible feedback! I had no idea about some of these things! I'll be sure to post some close-up shots.

MAJOR update here, I hope this doesn't break the page or anything.

Here are some details of the parts starting with the Helmet. Would love to get any feedback from you guys on this stuff on what can be better. Pics of the fit on me are coming soon too.

Helmet: fettpride Asok coldcast resin, painted with Humbrol paints, aluminum antenna smoked visor 3mm acrylic, purchased on ebay.

So the trim and paint job is quite rough along the opening for the visor. I need to smooth out and repaint.

Inside. What's that blue stuff?

Styrofoam like padding I plucked out from inside and cut the back portion out (so I could fit my big head in).

The rangefinder always gets loose and I find myself having to tighten it all the time! Could use some help.

Balaclava: MOW. This didn't come with the Boba Fett costume I bought, but I bought this new from MOW (Man of War Studios) off of ebay. It is stark white, should I dye or weather it?

oVGLt6Xl.jpg

Jumpsuit: TDH bought Arkady, height 1.75m 95kg weight at the fightsuit. Nicely weathered but a bit baggy on me. I will be tailoring it, bringing in the legs and arms mostly. Sorry for the lighting it's actually a light blue color.

Flak vest: Size L Bat ninja TDH; chest armor: abs; wookiee braids: Woodman.

The chest armor is attached by magnets - they get stuck to the harness, and at least one of the magnets came unglued from the armor. I will probably replace with velcro (sewn on the flake vest and sticky backed to the armor. Chest-display: Fettronics. The battery pack has a strip of velcro but I don't know where on the suit it's supposed to attach. Where do you guys put yours usually?

nbSL7jol.jpg

Underside of the collar plate. There's that blue stuff again - it's used to reinforce the holes. Looks like some magnets were removed and the strap holding the braids is permanently adhered.

Back armor: ABS.

What is this blue stuff and how can I remove it?

Shoulder bells: fettpride TDH.

arDsFGKl.jpg

Magnets don't hold well so I will replace with velcro. Sew some on the suit and sticky back inside the bells. What kind of glue do you think this is and how best to remove?

7JfhlZJl.jpg

Left gauntlet: Fiberglass, bought on ebay. Flamethrower is made out of a mix of resin and found metal parts. It arrived busted, I hot glued long enough for pictures suited up and it has since fallen apart again. I already ordered a new resin kit from boba trooper.

Right gauntlet: Fiberglass, bought on ebay. Aluminum darts by fenixprops. The hose is way too long and I need to find a way to attach it under the sleeve.

It looks as though it used to close with magnets but then switched to velcro, which also didn't work.

This is the underside where the darts are attached by a strip of hot glue. I'm so afraid to lose them, they are already a little loose. Any suggestions to best secure these in here?

Gloves: Seamstress.

Girth Belt: original.

Ammo Belt: Leather by Lander.

Harness: modified tactical harness with stainless steel hooks.

Cod and butt plates. Codd: ABS; Butt: fiberglass. I added and fabric spray painted (to weather) the elastic thong strap. I need to shorten it though.

Knee armor: Made of fiberglass with aluminum turned parts. They don't stay put on my knees and slide down when I walk, so I will be attaching velcro to the inside. Is the front sufficient? Or should I do sides too?

ihEvNpJl.jpg

mbfh9KQl.jpg

asMrjlNl.jpg

Elastic straps are VERY stark white, I'm planning on weathering these a little to help blend to the jumpsuit.

VGeXbF6l.jpg

Shin tools: Original patterson. But missing one. I ordered the 4th tool from toolguy301 shapeways store.

Dym9dlNl.jpg

Boots: MOW size 11. Toespikes: Mojofett.

The knob at the end of the barrel doesn't fit through the hole in the holster so I will need to dremel it larger to fit. It's a nuisance to have to unscrew the cap and screw it back on after removing or replacing the blaster into the holster.

Here's the inside of the holster with foam that holds the blaster in place.

That's one hell of a post! I think the blue stuff is some form of epoxy. At first I thought it was simple blue tack but if it's hard and the previous owner used it to strengthen the holes in the armor, it is most likely epoxy.

That stuff's difficult to remove without damaging the armor.

You might be able to tighten the rangefinder if you use a different washer or purposely bend your original washer that is between the screw and helmet so that when you tighten the screw there is more friction between the screw and the washer.

For the rangefinder, I drilled a space for a neodymium magnet in the upright position on the rangefinder stalk and on the side of the helmet. This keeps my rangefinder up regardless of how tight the washer is and it feels satisfying to feel the pull back into the vertical position when you move it. It may not be a good idea if you plan on having a rangefinder servo though.

tkRyno,

1) I like the helmet...it looks pretty well made...and the Fettpride makes a solid helmet.

2) The cape is currently designed to be attached in the corner. I believe this is not accurate, it is to be attached differently with the corner being tucked behind the jetpack strap. I saw an image linked on here a week or so ago from a dressing image taken, maybe someone can dig it up and show it.

3) Your toe spikes look really odd and should at least be weathered.

4) The darts on the right gauntlet should be straight and fixed.

5) Balaclava technically doesn't need to be weathered (I didn't weather mine much).

6) Your gloves look okay.

7) Wookie braids look fine.

8) Your collar studs will need painted.

9) Work on getting a screen accurate jet pack harness.

10) It might be me, but the suit looks to blue/gray enough to me...but it might be the lighting.

I'm back! I know it's been a while. We just got finished packing, moving, unpacking, that was a rough one. So I had my first fitting and photoshoot and got approved for the 501st!!! So now I'm an official TK and BH! I'm glad I was able to get the pics while I could because the flamethrower assembly broke after I suited down and I still have all of the previously discussed issues that I am now working to fix. Therefore, I haven't trooped yet, but I'm excited to fix and modify some things before I go on my first hunt. Here's pics from my photoshoot, I know of some issues, but I would love any of your feedback / criticisms!

My garrison approved it but advised me that I must raise the belt higher to close the gap below my vest. Again, this was only my first suit up and I really look forward to any feedback / critiques you may have!
