TK231's ESB Jetpack build

Andy, known here as TK231, has commissioned me to paint his MOW Jetpack, ESB style. So i thought id put up a build thread so you can see how i do it. Of course everyone has different techniques, this is just my method. It is rattlecans and acrylics for the most part. He is sending over all the metalupgraqdes, so i did not add the resin ones the MOW pack comes with.

So here we go...

Here is the Man of War Studios 2011 Fett jetpack. As usual, a beautiful piece. and well made kit.

First to prep, i sand off all the seamlines. MOW makes the seamlines very minimal and in good places to easily be removed.

After everything is sanded i add the tank caps. The newer packs have these seperate, my old MOW pack had them cast onto the pack. My guess is its easier to demold the pack without these pieces.

We can see the bottoms need to be smoothed out a bit before we attch them to the pack
100_2641.jpg

So i sand em on sandpaper on a flat surface, moving in a circular motion, like so..
100_2642.jpg

then we have this:
100_2647.jpg

Much better, i do the other one as well, and attch them to the pack. I also attached the "rocket ring"

Next i assemble the thrusters. These are now a 4 piece solid thruster rather than the 1 piece hollow ones from the 09 pack.

Glue the knurled circular wedge into the thruster cone like so:

Then Glue the thruster "ball" on top:
100_2651-1.jpg

Then you attach the arm (sorry didnt take a pic of this, but im sure you get it lol)

Repeat for the other thruster and you should have this:

I didnt add the detail pieces, as Andy is sending me the metalupgrades he got from Darkside :)

Ok, moving on...i decided to add the fins to the top of the rocket..pretty straight forward really.
100_2652-1.jpg

100_2653-1.jpg

I also added a bolt with wingnut into the bottom of the rocket, and earth magnets to the bottom of the top half of the rocket. This way the entire unit is removeable and able to break down for transport and/or storage. For some reason i didnt take a pic of the wingnut. But i basically drilled a hole in the center of the rocket and epoxied a bolt into it. But here is the magnet mounted toi the bottom of the top half of the rocket and inside the bottom half of the rocket:

i Then cut the trap door in the back like so:

Now that everything is assembled, i will begin to paint!

I painted the thrusters, rocket parts and main body of the pack with a white primer, and then with Rustoleum satin spruce green. I misted some of it with Krylon italian olive and then clear matte finish. The bottom half got a light dusting of krylon black primer. All done one after the other.

So i now have this:

I let everything dry overnight.

Woke up this morning and felt like working on this some more, so i startyed by mixing a color for the tank cap tops. I kinda just mixed it till it looked right to me. I used all testor paints. Gold a touch of silver, yellow, and turn signal amber to get the color. It looks very close to screen caps i have from cloud city scenes. I also painted the rocket collar. Andy will be getting the upgrade but is waiting for Darkside to make em. So i did this piece so ha will have something in the meantime.

So now we have this:

Rocket with the proper holes drilled:

..and the removable rocket top:
100_2672.jpg

I then misted the top upper right side with a light grey color with an airbrush (for more control) to begin the weathering..
100_2673.jpg

Then i misted with the black primer. Not sure why the color looks so different here, but, none the less here is how it looks:
100_2675.jpg

After this was dry, i then took 400 grit sandpaper and sanded select spots to get the effect i was going for.

Trying to show the detail here, but it doesnt show up in pics so great, but i think you get the idea

I didnt take pics of the rest of the progress really, but basically i added some grey on the center strip with a chipbrush and then added all the silver and red details

Just need to add the chips on the red teeth and then do the thrusters.

oh haha i left out "with an airbrush". Im gonna fix that. So yea i meant misting , in other words, lightly spraying, a light grey color on with the airbrush. :)
