They have girth belts in stock - shipping now.

After reading through this thread, I'm still puzzled as to which size belt I should order. The belts don't look terribly adjustable and I'd hate to order one and take my chances. I suppose I could purchase a few and dye them and see what comes of it. Keep the one that fits and sell the rest cheap and gives some friends here a break.

I was also wondering if RIT makes a grey/charcoal colored dye, and if anyone has used it, and if so how did the dye-job look after it's dyed and dried? I suppose I could use black but I don't want too much black overpowering the white and gry armor. I guess I'm just picky...Anyway, can any of you shine some light on all this for me? Thanks

I need a new girth belt also. I'm in the same boat, the more I read the more confused I get. I am skinny, I wear a size 30-31 inch waist pants. Do they make girth belts that would fit me? And where can I get one?

When I made *my* mohair girth belt (some 5 years ago), I bought the size I wear (36") and dyed it in a hot Rit bath. After it was dyed (and still wet), I stretched it across a long board with 2 nails on each end of it (1 buckle hooked over each nail, 2 buckles per end). This prevented it from excessively shrinking as it dried (Mohair (and wool) does that). Once dry, I made up the difference that it shrunk using the leather straps. ;)

What is the correct roceduer for dyeing these things? and exactly what color is the dye red or brown (Im doing ROTJ if that is important)

their site is now down and they only have size 38" in stock. I oredered a 34" and no shipping was asked anyway does anyone know another place to buy the girth belt cause a 38" would fall off me?

I emailed them about ordering something smaller than 40". Here's their reply:

The brown version is always out of stock at the supplier so we pulled until they could get back in. We do have the natural color in stock in sizes from 34 on up. If you'd like one of those, place your order online as normal, but include a note in the comments section as to which size you would actually like

Thanks!

The price is better, but they don't allow you to buy the smaller sizes for some reason. The smallest you can select is 40", even though they say it goes all the way down to 34" :confused

I actually used a mixture of several Rit dyes. I did a write-up (about 5 years ago - Summer '02), but I'm not sure if it's still on the board anywhere... :confused

  • DON'T use Rit powder dyes. They're hard to use, measure, and don't work that great anyway.
  • Use Rit liquid dyes if you have them available
  • If the Rit liquid dyes don't permeate the Mohair fibers, then that means that the girth has been sealed/treated at the factory. You'll need to bathe it in Acetone to remove the chemicals and THEN boil dye it with the Rit liquid dye.
Hope that helps. :D

rit dye doesnt stick to these.. i tried and was pissed
