Susurro's RoTJ SE Build

Susurro

New Hunter
Hey guys,

I've begun work on my first Boba project. I've been ordering hard parts and plan to paint everything myself. I bought an airbrush and practiced with that for a while before attempting my first armor piece.

I have a set of RKD armor, an Asok CC helmet, and a MoW jetback so far. All of it is amazing! You guys do incredible work.

I decided to start with the armor, as I feel I need a bit more practice before I go an attempt the helmet. Even further, I started with just the cod, as I wanted to get the feel of layering before I ended up having to strip everything back down! :D It's painted and has a tiny bit of weathering done to it, though it was done before removing any masking. I intend on more now with the masking off.

This was painted with a Floquil Bright Silver base, toned down with some dullcoat. Then layered with Humbrol 81, 78, and 117. I tossed a bit of 33 over the top, but that's as far as I've gone so far.

Feel free to give any suggestions, as I've never done with before and am not hesitant about stripping it and restarting! Also, I can't seem to figure out unloading images so they appear small and are expandable...Maybe I'm just bad at this! :facepalm So I just linked to it from another site. Is that acceptable practice around here?

Looking forward to seeing what you think!

It looks good for a first try and the colors are spot on! And about the image upload, I have the same issue, so I assume that the forum software has a bug. Keep up the great work!

You're off to a great start bro, really nice paint. Like Rafa stated, those colors look spot on (y) keep those pics coming, looking forward to seeing more.
And thanks for the kind words (for my section of that anyway lol)

Well, I've continued on with the painting. Still could probably need some more weathering, but I fear overdoing it, so I am holding off right now.

Criticism is more than welcome! :D

Well, I have been continuing on with the jetpack. It was all going well. Got my primer and silver on, then masked it off to paint my yellow.

Then while peeling the masking off, disaster struck! :(
Here's the pack after the masking was removed.

I swear I scrubbed it well to clean it before painting and gave it a good roughing up first. Any other reasons this might have happened?

I don't really want to take it back down to the start and reprime, but I also fear the same thing happening when I mask over my yellow parts now. Any advice?

My MOW had the same issue. Make sure you use quality primers and masking tape. I believe if I remember right it was a release agent issue.

Hmmm...I tried to get all the release agent off. Perhaps some stayed on, but I did soak it and scrub it several times before I started painting.

I'm using the Humbrol #1 primer, along with Scotch Blue painter's tape. Maybe I need a less adhesive painter's tape? I'm just afraid of not having a crisp edge then.

I wouldn't worry too much on the crisp edge. Weathering will take care of that. Along with some light steel wool scrub.

However I've had two MOW JPs. Only this latest one has had issues.

So, would the best thing to do be strip it, scrub it again, and start over? Or will just patching where the paint came up suffice?

I think I know the correct answer, but I've got to ask anyway...

To ensure my yellow was dry before attempting anymore painting on the jetpack, I moved on to my gauntlets, which I've been preparing in the background between paint layers on the other stuff.

Unfortunately, I dislike the color they turned out. I painted with Floquil Boxcar Red, but they seem too dull to me...not enough red. I avoided the Wisconsin Central Maroon, because my test sprays seemed way too bright. Maybe a misting with it will be a good compromise? Those are the only 2 reds I have right now. Any other recommendations? Or am I seeing things as off in color when they are really correct?

I decided to attempt patching the jetpack where it peeled. Prior to patching I covered the thing in masking tape, let it sit, and peeled the tape off to try to find anywhere else the paint's hold was weak. I'd rather find it now than when the whole thing is done!

The tape test brought up no significant areas of paint, so I moved on with patching and then masking and painting the red. And as I should have guessed, I managed to peel up more paint... I'm unsure why it peeled this time and not when I taped it previous, but it did. Therefore, I have decided to strip the whole thing, wash it again, rough it all up again, and perhaps leave it a bit rougher for the paint.

What is the best way to take off that much paint? Sanding or paint thinner? Do I have a danger of damaging the plastic with paint thinner?

Well, it's been a bit, but I've still been working on this. I kept the Boxcar Red for now. I may change my mind when everything is painted, but I think I'll try painting up everything else and seeing what comes.

Got the knees done. I obviously haven't yet added the darts.

Question on attachment...
I have the elastic around the back and I know a lot of people use velcro to secure them to your knees. Is this a large piece of velcro that takes up most of the knee? And with that there and little allowed movement, how does one kneel? Do you put the face of the knee armor on the ground and put your weight on it? I am afraid of ruining my paintjob. Maybe I'm overthinking it...

Anyways...here's some pictures!

Alright! It's been a while, but I've made a lot of progress. I stripped the jetpack and repainted from the base and got my helmet and shin tools done. So without further ado, here's some up to date shots!
