    Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

I have finally posted the studio scale 15” wide jet pack Beta Version patterns, they are still a bit rough. I haven’t yet had the chance to cut and paste this baby together and I don’t know when I’ll get the chance in the next couple of months, but I didn’t want to just sit on them so here they are.

If anyone gives them a try, let me know and I’ll help work out any issues that might pop up.

Well I have finally converted the files to standard 8.5 X 11, it took 56 pages to capture it all. This is a PDF file that will print out full size, there are a few sheets in the begining that show how to pieces together the puzzle. One area that might cause some confussion are the panels that cover the side tanks. The covers needed two pages, but only a small section is on the second page. I will try to post a pic showing how the two sheets fit together.

Forgot to mention the grid is 1” and to print it out full size it has to be enlarged 730%.

This is amazing work here! Excellent job wizardofflight and thanks for making these awesome patterns available. Now I know nothing about the process but how difficult would it be for one to get these pieces computer cut out of sintra? Any idea on what kind of company might offer such services?

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

Thank you for the compliment! I was beginning to wonder if anyone was interested, 110 views and only one comment had me worried.

Cutting the patterns via CNC should be easy enough to do. Someone has already CNCd the armor from CAD drawings. It would require the drawings to be convert to CNC code. Unfortunately I don't know anything about how to convert them, but I would be willing to supply the AutoCAD drawing files if someone would like to try.

The only thing is that I would want to do a test run by hand first to work out any issues with the patterns plus the material thickness would have to be worked into the drawings. Right know the patterns don’t account for any material thickness so there will be some fit interference, but that is somewhat of a variable as it depends upon what material the builder chooses to use.

Also, I still need to do an assembly guide to show how all the piece might fit together. But if someone would like to try please let me know.

It was pointed out that I forgot the upper and lower tank caps, so I have updated the zip file above to include those parts.

Thanks, I have noticed a rash of jet pack scratch builds lately so it looks like they are being put to good use. I nearly have Jango's arena JP templates ready, not too much different, but they are coming soon.

Well I couldn’t have accomplished anything without all of the great pictures and research that is available on the Dent, such as the Boba and Jango reference CD’s, Brak’s Buddy’s online photo archive. Plus folks like you that have put your heart and soul in to your entire suit are a great inspiration as well as setting the standard, which everyone is striving for.

I have spent a lot of time studying the pics and searching the forums for any information that might be useful. Have been a draftsman for most of my life allows me to reverse engineer and distill the information down into drawings and templates. I only wish that I had found this place a few years ago, I still have a lot of catching up too do.

One question I get asked a lot is “why are you just giving it away?” The thing is that I would be doing the drawings anyway and having the Dent to post them on allows me to get feedback that helps make the drawings even better. Plus it is great to watch folks use the drawings to create their own equipment. Besides with the Lucas Lurkers watching out there I have no desire to get a C&D order requiring me to hand over all of my hard work in order to make a few bucks.

This is one of the best forums that I visit, there is little or no fighting and everyone is eager to help and share information. Can’t ask for more than that.

buddy, its people like you that really set the bar high at our place. I remember the same thing went with Ghostbusters collecting, for years people would argue and hide measurements until one day a lone stranger with some darn good cad skills came around and just GAVE it to us...then disappeared. Since then and its been about 5 years now, Otto is still mentioned and he's still the benchmark in terms of measurements and proportion.

One small action can echoe for a long time.

Thank you for all your work, I for one LOVE your gauntlets work.

I don't really know much about sintra, but i'd going with the thinnest one, just so the jp can be light, unless u don't mind having a heavy jet pack. though the top part is very thick, and u might wanna find ways to make it thick. until i can find a source where they sell sintra (localy, not on internet), i'm gonna try to make one out of sintra myself.

1/8" sintra is a pretty good thickness (not flimsy but not really thick)

Here is a progress picture of my WoF jet pack, as built by me I just have to decide; Stubby or regular. 90% of it is styrene, and the rest is PVC and ABS.

It would have taken me a heck of a lot longer to build it, if I didn't have WoF drawings.

Hey all...new builder here and have a few questions.

    First and foremost...Great plans Wizard!

What is the measurement on those PVC pipes? I can't get an accurate measurement from the plans and dont know what I need to head out to lowes to buy. basically I just need the diameter. Thanks all!

I measured 2.5" for the pipes, but as far as I know you wont find PVC that size. The pipes I currently have in there are 2". I am most likely going to cut out my PVC pipe once I locate something better. Possibly a couple 2" connector joints glued together, I donno. I hear some people mention pop cans, but I think they would need re-enforcing.

Thanks for the comments on the pack, I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did without Alan's drawings.

this may be a stupid question....but how do you print these templates on paper big enough? I was going to print them out at school, but they will only print on 8.5x11 paper. I saw the tip about enlarging them to 700% or so, so that they will be full size, but when they print they dont print all on one sheet. Any info would be great! Thanks

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

No questions are stupid. One thing that you might check is to see if the printer will let to do a Tile Print. This is where the printer automaticly breaks the image into 8.5 X 11 blocks which you then have to paste back together. The other option is to take the file to someplace like Kinkos and have them print it out on their large format printers.

At some point I hope to be able to break everything down into standard paper sizes for printing, but it will take a while to get to that project.

    Hello,

Some printers will let you print out large images in a “tiled” format for banners and such, failing that Kinkos or any drafting/CAD shop should be able to print them out full size.

I am trying to reorganize them to print out on 8.5X11, but I’m not there yet.

    Have a great day.

WOF, this is awesome, just like everything else you make.

I have a question on sizing them, and wanted to know if you could answer. I have a big cardboard tube that I found, and it's about 4 inches in diameter. I wanted to know if this tube could be used as the center tube with your templates, and what percent size to print this as to match the tube. Or if the tube is even worth using if it might make the overall jet pack too small? Any help would be great.

    Again, awesome templates! I can't wait for the 8.5 x 11 version!

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

There are two different tube diameters for the center of the jet pack the main tube in the body of the pack for the 15" wide JP is 4 5/16" while the upper tube (the base for the "rocket") is about 3 1/2". To use your 4" tube the main body of the jet pack, it would have to be reduced down to 92.75%, which would make the overall width of the JP about 13.9". That seems a bit small to me, but if you are about 5' 7" tall a 13.9" wide JP would be the prefect size. I am planning on using 4" PVC (actual OD is 4.5") for the main body of my JP it is a bit over size and 3" PVC (actual OD is 3.5"), PVC is very cheap even in these sizes.

    Hope this helps you.

Sweet, thanks WOF! That really helps me, since I am almost exactly 5'7".

I forgot about the tube being thinner for the rocket base. I'll check out the PVC. Since there is two base tubes, I might as well get both 4" and 3" if I get the PVC and save the cardboard tube for something else.

Hopefully I'm not being annoying with all these questions, but what should the side tubes' diameter's be? Might as well get all my questions out of the way now.

No problem any time. The tanks on either side are about 2 9/16" so 2" PVC should work nicely - it is 2 3/8" OD.

Well this is going to make a lot of people very happy and a few very annoyed, but what can you do.

I have resolved the printing problems the link in the first post has been updated to a PDF file that is comprised of 56 8.5" X 11" pages that will allow you print out the jet pack full size with out any muss or fuss.

I have made a few corrections, but these are still in a rough format so if you have any problems please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I want to thank Xombie for his help and efforts to help convert these to a more useable format.:thumbup

I would too, if it weren't for the fact that I'm under-age.

I am very glad I didn't print them out yesterday! But 56 sheets?! I need to get started printing NOW! Good thing I just got new ink!

Thanks so much, WOF! Without you, we'd be...well, screwed.

Alright, I have what might be a very dumb question. How would I go about printing these out at a certain percent in Adobe Acrobat Reader?

The ZIP file in the first post has been updated to include the missing assembly page, but for those that already have downloaded it here is the missing assembly page:
    http://home.comcast.net/~wizardoffli..._Miss_Assy.pdf

    MandoMan,

Not sure how to print out different percentage in Acrobate Reader, maybe some out there that has a bit more experience with the program can help. What scale do you need? If all else fails you can always reduce them on a photocopier.

Sorry I not much help on this one.

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

I was going to print it out at 92.75% like you suggested. I'll just wait a couple of days to see if anyone else chimes in on how to do it, then I'll probably go the photocopier method.

thanks very much for the 8.5 x 11 update. If you're ever up to Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta Canada I will most certainly like to buy you a couple "beverages" myself, as I am sure most of the Badlands Garrison would as well.

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

When i print the new 8.5 by 11 plans i cant get them to print at the right (same) size. The size of each page is different according to adobe and not one will fit on 8.5 by 11 unless they are reduced. The problem with that is without scale on each page how will i do this? My printer also dosen't want to print right to the edge and creates a border. I know that all the work has already been done and i'm not complaining but however i am dumb and still need more help thanks and dont laugh too loud. If anyone could help by putting scale on each page i would be eternally grateful.

    Hello,

You shouldn't have to do any scaling. The templates are set up to have a .25" boarder when printed out so there should be a boarder on each page.

Which version of Acrobate are you using? If version 7, in the print menu set "Page Scaling:" to "Fit to Printer Margins" that should allow the pages to print out the correct size.

Let me know if you have any more problems.

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

I'm using version 7 i set page scaling to "fit printer" and also auto rotate and centre. However the boarder around the page is strange it's not even. along the top it's just shy or 1/8 on the left it's 2/8 the right 3/8 and the bottom it's 4/8. I think this is due to the fact that my printer sucks. When i print the scale it comes up shorter than 10 inches by 3/16. Thanks for your help and amazing plans.

I think i may have found the problem reducing a 13.7 by 18.0 inch documnet to 8.5 by 11 is not a proper ratio. I mean the difference is very small ( 1.636363... to 1.611764....) but I think that is why the 10 inches is only off by a little more than 1/8 of an inch

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

    Hello,

Just to note the first 6 pages are not going to be printed to scale, but all of the pages are based on an 8" X 10.5" retangle (this allows .25" boarder all around) not 8.5" X 11".

I have tested this on an HP inkjet and a couple of different laser printers without any distortion. If all else fails you could always take it to a Kinkos to have it printed if you can't get your printer to play nice with it.

ok thanks once again I have the worst printer ever, dam you lexmark!
The margins are just weird, it wont print certain sizes. Time for a new printer.
Your work is the best I have ever seen and cant wait to start with the jet pack.
As others have said this costume wouldn't be the same without your blue prints or your help if you ever come to Toronto I owe you a couple of Beers or Some sort of Icy beverage.

    Hi guys

just a quick stupid question regarding the putting together of these plans.

where the side pieces go onto the back plate, they seem to 'sit' on the back plate and attached end on tothe bottom plate (see attached pic A).

however at the top end of the JP the side panel is the wrong shape to sit end on to the top plate, Is this supposed to sit side on to the top plate?

    I hope this makes sense

Thank you for the vote of confidence guys it is turely apperciated. I have gotten a great deal of satisfaction from seeing all the scratch built jet packs and helmets that have been posted lately and the runs of flamethrowers and other parts based on my drawings.

The one thing that really is great is seeing all the kids decked out in their Fett gear, that is just too cool!!

I wish I had the time to set up my Fett website, but I've been just too busy with other projects to get to it. Maybe some day my Fett templates will rate a sticky.

Well, for the record, I have been working on my pack using these templates and let me just say that WoF is a freakin' genius! Everything goes together well and no issues. With building it mostly from sintra, I'd guess the final pack will weigh at or around 2-3 lbs in the end.

Since there's no way on Earth that I'll be able to afford a Bobamaker jet pack anytime remotely soon, I think I'm going to have my technophobic self try and sort out how to print all these pages out and then use them to make something complicated like the jet pack in the coming months. Needless to say, it's not gonna be pretty...I'll keep you posted-I'm sure it'll be almost like a comedy routine for you all! Has anyone come up with a complete list of materials someone will need before starting this project? Maybe recommendations on what the best materials are for the job and anything else that'd be helpful to someone fairly new to prop making etc...Any suggestion would be helpful to me, so all would be welcome...

I would recommend 3mm and 1mm foamex. These are the two main elements I used when building mine... and loads of epoxy filler (Bondo)

The filler will bond foamex together very well, see if you can find 'easy sand' filler, this is a major help.

    Have fun

You want to use Bondo spot and glazing putty for the fine areas. I used regular auto body bondo for major fills and then used the glazing putty to smooth out that and the fine areas.

The stuff sands like a dream, but the only drawback is that you can't put it on very thick because it tends to crack when setting up if you have it too thick. This is for smoothing out places and hiding seams.

You can get it at Wal-Mart, Meijer, Autozone, Advance Auto, O'Reilly's...etc.

I've been using WOF plans for a jet pack, but making an arena version. Pictures here: http://www.johnpalmeri.com/TK868/cpg...s.php?album=10

Does anyone have an idea of what I can use for the bottom grate on the main tube? Found item, similar item to be reworked or someone that is selling resin copies?

I just printed these out at work and i absolutely love 'em...

but you know what they say.. invent something fool proof and someone will invent a better fool.

So.. a suggestion. How about numbering the pages so when looking on the assembly pages as well as the partpages so that you can say: "Ah.. so that part can be found on page 34!" and so forth...

With a .pdf reader like adobe acrobat...it's free. You just unzip the .zip file with winzip or winrar. If you are running windows xp, you don't need winzip or any other program to unpack these zipped files.

Hey Alan, do you still have a full sized, uncut-up (tiled) version of your templates for the pack? and 15" is the "official" size of the movie used pack? is that the width from side tank to side tank?

I don't know that I have ever hear of an "Offic1al Size." My originally research lead me to believe that 15" was pretty close, but I am now leanning toward 16.5" based on some pics of the actual pack with a yard stick, with that said the perspective in the pic still might be play tricks. I havben't quite finished the revise templates based on hte new size, but they are coming.

Don't forget you also need to account for the size of the wearer, if your 6 feet then go full size, if your 5'2" then a full size pack will look wrong, so you need to scale to your subject.

As for the file I have CAD files available to whoever needs them, just PM me your e-mail and I'll send the on out. Make sure to let me know what format you need.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I have your original templates for 15", and I've built the rocket already, that's why I was looking to confirm. I'm 5'10", so the 15" pack should be ok, maybe the 16.75 could be better. I'll see how it winds up. Thanks again for all your work! As always, I'm profoundly amazed.

    Shinobi_Fett

Sorry it should have been 16.5" not 16.75", loosing my mind.

Scaling is the key to a good costume. If everthing is in the right propotions it will look great. I deal with anthropometric data in my real job and everyone is different. For example Jango is a real bear to get to fit for some folks, my Personal Jango templates are a combination of large for the upper body and a modified medium for the legs. I'd be 6'3" if my legs were the right length to matched my torso and weight. (hey that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

I have done some custome templates for folks that have long legs and a short torso, but once the templates were scaled properly they looked great.

    Lucky31,

I still have the Fett fever. Though I'm in a creative slump at the moment, but it won't last forever, though it is begining to feel that way. I still have too many template left to do and maybe then I will get back to work on my own Fett costumes.

Re: Studio Scale 15” Jetpack Patterns

Ok I just had the complete set of jet pack templates printed out at Staples and hopefully I can start working on it soon but I'd like to offer some advice about getting these templates printed......how you use this advice depends on whether you are cruel or kind:

As you all know with the 57 page .pdf file the templates are all broken up and confusing looking at a glance. The girl (16 years old tops) that copied these out for me grabbed them from the printer and started flipping through them. What followed was a lot of confusion on her part and stuttering and stammering as she tried to figure out what went wrong. I'd told her they were templates and she thought she'd goofed somehow and ruined them all until I showed her how they were all broken up into smaller pieces....much to her relief. So if you get them printed feel free to warn your copy centre employee or torture them....your call

Ben, i havent seen the plastic at either home depot or lowes, you usually have to call a 'plastics' distributor. Or a sign shop, who will get them from a plastics distributor in your area, and then charge you double

Others here have done this better than me... I know there is an awesome one going right now but I can't remember the members name. Here are my two threads to give you an idea of how I used the WOF templates.

First, I should say that these blueprints of the jet pack are just great, and it's very generous of WoL to contribute them for us. Thanks very much.
I've been trying to print them up and have run into a snag. Is this right: when I get them printed up, the inch and centimeter scale that is on page 30 should be printing up exactly accurate, right? One inch on there should equal one real inch? When I print it, and I set it up the WoL suggested, the inches come out to be about 1.5" long. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

    Matt

What you have to do is adjust your printer settings and scale the picture size down. Not a lot of printers are actually set to the right size for these printouts, mine was a hair large but not the 50% you have. Hope that helps.

Hey all , I printed out the templates and transferred them to my foamex, but the back of the the pack looks a little small. How tall and how wide is the pack supposed to be?(height minus the rocket)

Thanx! any suggestions about the access hole in the back or reinforcement? With the foam board the pack only weighs 1.3 lbs.
