General Spats coloring..what to use...

New Hunter
Hi,

I'm putting the finishing touches on my rotj Boba Fett, and have one last thing to finish. What should i use to color the spats with. I used fabric paint to paint the boots with, but it is too dark to use on the spats. I cannot find any upholstery paint online that is a lighter shade of gray. Any help would be much appreciated!

RoTJ spats are a bit of a mystery. Are you going for CRL 501st certification? Per those guidelines the spats must be the same color as your ammo pouch bags.

Hip Pouches
For 501st approval:

  • A pouch is present at each hip.
  • Pouches are beige and must be weathered.
  • Pouches have angled flaps at the top.
  • Pouches are mounted via fabric loops over the ammo belt. The loops are the full width of the pouches.

Spats
For 501st approval:

  • The top of the boot is covered by a fabric spat of similar color to the belt pouches.

My spats as such are the exact same beige color as my hip pouches...which differs from the CRL image for the costume spats and overall image of the costume. I created my costume as the CRLs state...however it has also been considered okay to have grey spats similar in color to your flight suit, which should be a light grey with a blue hue. Most people dye it the same color as their flight suit or hip pouches when doing the flight suit.

Well i bought the costume from another 501st member, they just never finished it. The flight suit is already completed, so I'm not sure what he used to color it with. That's just the trick, finding a gray that matches the flight suit and is lighter than the boots.

I think I just lightly misted mine with the same spraypaint I used to weather the flightsuit. Not a lot though, they're still beige like the pouches.

501st members are awesome, I'm one myself as a Fett. That said people often get into a costume and buy stuff thinking it will work only to be stonewalled by the garrison GML. Just because you bought from a member doesn't mean you have the right stuff. His stuff was never certified so everything is questionable until its certified for you. If you are going for 501st certification I strongly suggest going to your local garrison's GML and asking for their thoughts. It doesn't matter what anyone here thinks about your Fett...it only matters what the garrison GML thinks for approval. I submitted a pretty awesome Fett my first time and had a list of no less than 26 items I had to correct on my outfit. In fact it took three submissions until I was finally accepted. My GML was hard on me...but I appreciate the accuracy he did for helping me take my costume to another level.
