slave1pilot paints another ROTJ pack

Thanks for posting. How are you getting the weathering? Is the paint coming up with the tape?

I mask off the areas that I don't want painted with Blue tape.
Then I use Liquid masking fluid to mask the major areas that are to remain silver

Then after the paint has thoroughly dried (very important to be patient here) I remove the tape
I let the paint dry even longer , then I get to work with an X-acto knife
I look at reference pics & try to duplicate the majority of the scratches
I don't try to make it exact, (that would drive me crazy) i just try to get the "feel" of the scratches

so, they are real scratches & chips on the jet pack
I feel it gives a very realistivc feel to the pack when seen in person

great job as usual :)

i feel the same way about the scratches. i don't try to get every one exactly right, but i try to get the right... i dunno... density of damage? that seems a decent way to describe it.

I'll be doing my first paint jobs on a RotJ helmet and jet pack very soon. I originally planned to just do topical scratches, as the layered paint frightened me. But I'm toying with the idea of actually doing the layered with the masking fluid. My only question is, after you get the color on and are using the knife to chip away the color to get to the silver, how do you ensure you don't go straight through the silver paint as well?

You can't
Just be careful, & try to scratch only the outer color.
It helps to have the silver painted pretty thick & I also clearcoat the silver with a few layers
Even if you do scratch through the silver, you still have the grey primer, then the gelcoat (which is also grey)
it blends well & adds to the realism of the scratches so relax, it'll be fine
and...
you can always repaint it
;)

Most of that makes sense, but you'll have to forgive me, I've never heard of a gelcoat. I understand the primer, then the silver, then the clearcoat, then the color, and a clearcoat on top of that. Are you saying this gelcoat goes on before the primer? what's it for?

Is there a certain number of coats you put on of the color? (ie do you keep it relatively thin so you can scratch through it or does it not matter how thick the color is?)

and what's the best way to apply the masking fluid? It doesn't seem like a brush would be best for the kind of scratches we're trying to replicate. What kind of method do you use?

I know that's a lot of questions all at once but I really do appreciate the help!

I usually use my fingernail, rather than a knife, when I'm painting stuff like that.

It's harder to damage the under layers. You end up pretty dirty, but whatever :)

I LOVE this thread! I'm in line for mid-August to get the exact same thing when my MLC2 arrives at Slave1Pilot's house! The anticipation is killing me. Is he THE master or what?!

Dude! I'm really serious! When ever i get a new jet pack I'm sending it to you. Send me a PM with prices so that i could start saving my pennies.

I do one or two coats of each color
& I do use an old paintbrush to apply the masking fluid
Remember, the fluid is only for the larger areas, the fine areas are real scratches

I've heard that one before ;)
you gonna be at SDCC right? we'll talk then

Gelcoat is nothing you will have to worry about, it's in the process for casting a fiberglass jet pack. First the gelcoat goes in the mold and then the layers of fiberglass. ;)
