Skaught's 5 y/o Boba Fett Build - FINISHED PICS!

Skaught

Active Hunter
My son Ben is going to be Boba Fett this year, so I've been working on some parts for the last couple weeks on an off. I'll post what I have now and update as I go. I made the undersuit using a short sleeve and long sleeve t-shirt and some karate pants. No pics of that yet but once I dye it blue I'll take some.

First, here is the helmet that I finished about an hour ago. The helmet is the one One End is selling. It fits just right. I painted it using the same method I used for painting my own helmet. I didn't do quite as many levels of color, but I think it came out looking pretty good anyway. After each coat, I would use masking fluid to protect the spots I wanted to show through.

Here is the chest and back armor that has been cut out and shaped.

Next is the cape. I dyed some white canvas the khaki color, then used spray paint to make the orange stripe. I rough it up with my hands to soften it and "fade" the orange a bit. Then I cut up the bottom edge and weathered it with black spray paint.

That's it so far! I have parts for the backpack rocket, but I'm still not 100% on the body. I'm thinking of using a dense foam rubber pool kickboard as the base, but I'm not sure how well it will take paint. We'll see.

Very nice work so far. Boba is very difficult build for an adult, can't imagine doing it for a child. My 10 year old son asked if he could be Boba next year as I will have completed my Jango & we can match. I guess I better get busy now! Really a great job so far Scott.

Just finished the jetpack last night. This came out a lot better than I thought it would. With this piece, I wanted to make it as light as possible. So the main body and the octogon-tubes are cut from a dense foam pool kickboard I stole from the backyard pool box. The stuff cuts like hot butter, so a perfectly straight line was almost impossible. But it's very light, soft, and paint sticks to it. In the end, it just looks dented up rather than rough cut I think. Luckily, that works for Boba Fett.

The top cone I made with a small funnel and liquid urethane plastic. After it cured, I popped it out and sanded the tip down to a point and hollowed most of it out with a drill. I glued in a PVC pipe that runs the length of the rocket. The next section down is a short piece of PVC. Then the next cone shape piece is the top portion of a crayon bank I bought at the dollar store. Next, the top from a small paint jar, followed buy two High School Musical cones you put on the ground to ride your bike around, mark a goal line, etc. Those also came from the dollar store. The same crayon bank tops were used for the two side nozzels, stuck onto a Christmas ornaments. The center tube on the main body is a poster/blueprint tube, which is much lighter than PVC. PVC endcaps were used on the top and bottoms of each octogon piece. It's all glued onto a piece of 1/8" Sintra.

I made the beacon in about 2 minutes holding a wood dowel against a belt sander and then cutting slots at the end with a dremel. I surprised myself with how nice that came out.

I'm really happy with how it came out. It's only about 24" tall.

Do you have any step by step pictures? It looks fantastic

I kept meaning to take photos along the way, but never had a camera handy, so unfortunately no. It's all fairly basic, though. Hot glue hold most everything together. The foam eats it up (and melts it a bit, too). The center square is the original thickness of the foam kickboard. I just cut a 6" x 6" square. The octogon pieces are doubled up, almost. I cut one long portion and glued another portion of the same lenth onto it, then cut down the thickness by about a third. I cut it all on a scroll saw, including the angles. That foam just flys through it.

Tonight I will attach the straps and hooks and see how it looks on my son. I finished his vest, shirt and pants last night. I just need to make the spats and then dye the blue parts. The vest needs to have velcro sewn on, but I'll do that after figuring out where the armor will go exactly.

Here are the finished pics! I was working on this up until 2pm on Halloween. Finished in the nick of time. His helmet was STILL squishing his face, so I heat gunned the inside for a bit and then squeezed the sides as it cooled. That did the trick. I fixed the jetpack's "hang", so it wasn't tilting so far back like in these pics. After halloween, the only things broke were the boot spikes. I'll use metal instead of plastic next time. Too man curb kicks I think.

Fantastic job Scott!!! A true little Boba! The pictures with the typical boba poses inside your house are great! He truly looks a bit like JB himself as a child, doesn´t he?

Awesome bro!

Cheers,
Manuel

Thanks! After making the gauntlets, I realized that I could have made my own. The trick to making them look nice was taking taking the extra step and adding the little details. I used plastic ups as the base. Instead of just leaving them at that, I cut the holes and edge details out and glued some garage sale sign plastic inside. Glazing putty let me blend the two layers together nicely. I'm really happy with how that came out. The rest is MDF and bondo on the sides.
