Shin Tool Layout- Is there a standard?

Yeah, I know. This is nitpicking, but as I was getting my Fett together, and trying to figure out which pocket to put the shin tools in, I realized I rarely see the same tool "configuration" twice.

Here are just four of the layouts I've found. I think it's safe to say that the ROTJ layout is the easiest to accurately confirm, but I've noticed several TDH and 501st members utilizing different pockets for different tools. Knowing how picky some of you (and me) are, I was just curious as to why they seem to vary so much. Granted, it's just a question of switching the tools in the pocket, but it just seems to me to be an easily overlooked detail. But would you put your cape on your RIGHT shoulder, instead of your left?

Hey all,
I just recieved my Shin tools from RA and I was curious to know what the proper placement for a RTOJ costume would be ? , Ive seen a bunch of different peoples costumes and there are a few who have placed em in different pouches. I would love any info with these

There seems to be a bit of deviation when it comes to the shin tools in ROTJ. BF's image above is from the SE suit. The shots below are film stills from Jedi and show two different configurations:

ROTJ tools (on sail barge during stunt)

ROTJ tools (in Jabba's Palace)

ESB shin tools (Bespin Hallway)

Although, the tool set at the top seems to be a different set than the "hero" set, as the "Squeegee tool" has neither the stripe nor the black decals.

Looks like he had problems with his Knee Armor too? The right one (left looking at it) is half down below his knee.

That reminds me of that passage in the "BucketHead" featurette on the AOTC DVD where Jeremy talks about bending his knees and the knee pieces go shooting off because the Velcro/elastic lets go.

I still think that there probably is no "right" or "wrong" way to wear the shin tools, unless you want to look specifically like "ROTJ Boba from Jabba's Palace" or "ROTJ Boba from the Sail Barge". These ARE tools, and I think Boba would have viewed them as such and not had a specific place for each one. He probably grabbed them and shoved what he could in one pocket, and everything else went into the other pocket! hehe

I've even had to deviate the placement of my shin tools due to a construction mishap involving my pouches. Now my jet pack tool and knife go in the left pouch, and my anti-security blade in the right. I haven't made a sonic beam weapon yet. :facepalm

Has anyone made METAL shin tools? My jet pack tool is aluminum, but everything else is Sintra.

On the subject of shin tools, I've never understood why so many people flip out over the lower ends of the tools. Sure, the Visual Dictionary shows 'working' tools, but come on. You never see the bottoms of the tools any other exhibit shots or movies.

As I understand it, weren't the VD tools made that way just so they could add more pictures in the book? Does anyone really that that 'survival' knife is going to be able to cut anything?

I made mine out of the actual Paterson photography pieces, so they're not resin. I just never felt a need to construct working replicas. Once, I did convert a screwdriver into a shin tool, since I needed it to change my 9V battery in my old amp system.

I've never had anyone come up me at a convention and say, "Hey, great costume, but let's see yer shin tools."

Do these things get presented between Fetts at other cons? If someone challenges my shin tools, am I not 'with it' if my tools are only half-done?

For those that have the complete tools, I apologize. I applaud you for your creativity, I just don't understand. Getting old, I suppose...

My biggest thing that happens with MY shin tools, is on occasion at events people will ask me what they are. I even let them (sometimes) pull them out of my pouches to look at them.

I'd kind of like metal ones for aesthetic reasons, and because they'd look cool hung up in my new transport case next to my blaster!

I might just go down to Home Depot and buy a piece of metal. They sell these pieces that are something like 36" long x 6" wide x 1/8" or 1/4" thick. That would be fine for everything but the jet pack tool, and what I'm using for the jet pack tool currently is a machined aluminum rod with knurled places on it...

I don't think anyone could call you on not have a "complete" set of VD tools. No one knows what the bottom of most of the tools look like, and they are probably totally incomplete. Hence, that would be the screen accurate shin-tool look.

Because on set, it doesn't matter worth a lick, because no one ever gets to see the bottom of the tool on screen. I'll be doing my tools from the Patterson equiment, and they will be as raw as the reference photos suggest the are.

I think that having them made of plastic or Sintra makes since because those things would drive you crazy if they were any heavier. And try bringing a Metal Knife into a Con....Aint gonna happen.
